Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Herbert C. Brown The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1979 Herbert C. Brown, born to Charles Brovarnik and Pearl Gorinstein, was born on May 22, 1912. He had three sisters, Ann, born in 1909, Sophie, born in 1916, and Riva, born in 1918. Herbert did well in school and graduated at age 12. On graduation, he went to Englewood High School on the South Side of Chicago. Unfortunately, my father became ill of some sort of infection and died in 1926. He married Sarah Baylen "secretly" on February 6, 1937. He received his Ph. D. in 1938. Unfortunately (perhaps fortunately) he couldn't find an industrial position. Professor Schlesinger invited him to become his research assistant with the rank of Instructor, replacing Anton B. Burg, who was moving on to the University of Southern California. He became Associate Professor in 1946, and was invited to Purdue in 1947 by the Head of the Chemistry Department, Henry B. Hass, as Professor of Inorganic Chemistry. In 1959 he became Wetherill Distinguished Professor and in 1960 Wetherill Research Professor. He became Emeritus in 1978, but continued to work with a large group of post doctorates. Originally his research covered physical, organic and inorganic chemistry and he took students in all three areas. In addition to his research program in the borane-organoborane area, described in his Nobel Lecture, his research program has involved the study of steric effects, the development of quantitative methods to determine steric strains, the examination of the chemical effects of steric strains, the non-classical ion problem, the basic properties of aromatic hydrocarbons, a quantitative theory of aromatic substitution, and the development of a set of electrophilic substitution constants, sigma, which correlate

    The Dispossessed
    by 100 Nobel Laureates
The following statement was released on December 7, 2001, by 100 Nobel Prize winners to coincide with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first Nobel prizes. Although the statement began circulating among the laureates last summer, most of them signed it after September 11. The most profound danger to world Peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust. It cannot be expected, therefore, that in all cases they will be content to await the beneficence of the rich. If then we permit the devastating power of modern weaponry to spread through this combustible human landscape, we invite a conflagration that can engulf both rich and poor. The only hope for the future lies in cooperative international action, legitimized by democracy. It is time to turn our backs on the unilateral search for security, in which we seek to shelter behind walls. Instead, we must persist in the quest for united action to counter both global warming and a weaponized world.

An Open Letter To the U.S. Senate: We urge the Senate to oppose the passage of the pending U.S. Senate Bill S. 507. We hold that Congress, before, embarking on a revision of our time tested patent system, should hold extensive hearings on whether there are serious flaws in the present system that need to be addressed and if so, how best to deal with them. This is especially important considering that a delicate structure such as the patent system, with all its ramifications, should not be subject to frequent modifications. We believe that S. 507 could result in lasting harm to the United States and the world. First, it will prove very damaging to American small inventors and thereby discourage the flow of new inventions that have contributed so much to America's superior performance in the advancement of Science and technology. It will do so by curtailing the protection they obtain through patents relative to the large multi-national corporations. Second, the principle of prior user rights saps the very spirit of that wonderful institution that is represented by the American patent system established in the Constitution in 1787, which is based on the principle that the inventor is given complete protection but for a limited length of time, after which the patent, fully disclosed in the application and published at the time of issue, becomes in the public domain, and can be used by anyone, under competitive conditions for the benefit of all final users. It will do so by giving further protection to
