Hoover Institution Exhibit Extended: continues to February 2001
STANFORD , has been extended to February 28, 2001, because of the additional interest accompanying the recent publication of Brodsky's Collected Works in English . Group tours in both Russian and English are now available. The story of the Nobel prize recipient and U. S. poet laureate's life is told through books (many special editions), manuscripts, and photographs, some never before published from his teenage years. The collection of Irwin T. and Shirley Holtzman in the Hoover Institution Archives forms the basis of the exhibition. Additional materials are from the private collections of Lev Poliakov and Eleonara Larionova Kuliakov. Brodsky, the victim of Soviet harassment, was convicted as a "social parasite" in 1964. The testimony from his trial, leaked to the western media, propelled him from a little-known twenty-three-year-old-poet to an international symbol of the individual's rights against the state. Judge: Who recognized you as a poet? Who enrolled you in the ranks of poets?

Remembering Joseph Brodsky Cissie Dore Hill An appreciation of the exiled Russian poet and winner of the Nobel Prize for literature. Cissie Dore Hill is the exhibits coordinator of the Hoover Institution Archives. T he Soviet Union had little patience for writers who spoke their minds independently of official ideology. Whether these minds were overtly political, or simply embraced a worldview that valued the individual over the masses or the spiritual over the material, did not matter. Recognizing the power of the written word, the authorities frequently arrested and sometimes imprisoned, exiled, or executed writers. Joseph Brodsky, Leningrad, 1964. Photo by Lev Poliakov.
Social parasitism Judge: And what is your profession in general? Brodsky: Poet translator. Judge: Who recognized you as a poet? Who enrolled you in the ranks of poets? Brodsky: No one. And who enrolled me in the ranks of humanity? Judge: Did you study this? Brodsky: This? Judge: To become a poet. You did not try to finish high school where they prepare, where they teach? Brodsky: Judge: How then?

Russkaya mysl It was through the prism of language that he perceived the course of history. In America, Brodsky started learning English from scratch. While he was serving his terms in the north of Russia, he was introduced to the verses of W. H. Auden by an anthology of English poetry sent to him from Moscow. There he found the lines about the time that celebrates language and forgives all those through whom it lives. That thought accompanied Brodsky all his life. He had a massive English-Russian In his essay on Auden Brodsky explained that he started writing in English in 1977 to feel much closer to the person whom he regarded as the greatest mind of the twentieth century; it was a desire to please a ghost (Auden died in 1973). Comparing his situation with that of Nabokov, Brodsky says in an interview with Evgeni Gorny that they were in different positions because English was practically a native tongue for Nabokov who spoke it from childhood. For Brodsky, English began with an admiration for the language which then compelled him to accept English as another instrument to discover the world, an instrument as indispensable as the Russian language. He said he would have gone crazy if he had been confronted with the choice of using only one language, either Russian or English. Elegy for Robert Lowell Brodsky said that he still liked his Russian poems. He did not intend to become an

Introduction to Joseph Brodsky's "In a Room and a Half"
    by Jacqueline Marcus
"In a Room and a Half" is Brodsky’s last attempt to join his parents. Brodsky’s father was a professional photographer and journalist. Something of the art of photography must have been passed on to his son. This beautiful narrative was as close as Brodsky could come to presenting a family album of photographic "takes" or "frames" which emerge in the poet’s memory from his childhood days. There are forty-five photos that make up "In a Room and a Half." You cannot possibly stand outside of this memoir as a "detached witness" once you begin to read it. It is as if you were sitting late into the night with Brodsky—the last log is burning out and he begins to tell you about something that is, under ordinary circumstances, a private and solitary affair of the heart. In this sense, we feel privileged, and we want him to go on—to keep turning the pages of his lost youth, to share whatever sacred memories he has left to share about his life with his parents. It is indeed an act of defiance that is anything but sentimental. And yet, who can read this eulogy without feeling their heart drop to the floor? vividly real.

The Story of Joseph Brodsky: Convicted 'Social Parasite' Joseph Brodsky, sentenced to hard labor in 1964 for
being a "social parasite" and expelled from the Soviet
Union 8 eight years later, was awarded the 1987 Nobel
    Prize in Literature.
Brodsky himself was convicted of being a "social
parasite" and sent to Siberia as a young man. The
judge who sentenced him asked Brodsky who had
authorized him to be a poet. Responding with the
    impertinence proper to a
scion of a poetic line that traces back to Francois
Villon, Brodsky told the judge that nobody had authorized him to be a human being. The 'parasite law' was introduced in some republics as early as 1957. The intention was to prosecute people, not practicing regular paid work, as 'parasites'. . This was a vaguely worded provision which could be used to proceed against anyone who caused trouble for the authorities. It was possible to dismiss an intended victim from his job and then block his attempts to find another one. The wording of the law included phrases such as 'working for the sake of appearances only'.

bon mots Altra Ego : "Herein lies the ultimate distinction between the Beloved and the Muse: the latter doesn't die. The same goes for the Muse and the Poet: when he's gone, she finds herself another mouthpiece in the same generation. To put it another way, she always hangs around a language and doesn't seem to mind being mistaken for a plain girl." Oh dear, spare me the female muse, please. In the essay How to read a book (written in 1988) he recommends the following poets: "If your mother tongue is English, I might recommend to you Robert Frost, Thomas Hardy, W.B.Yeats, T.S.Eliot, W.H.Auden, Marianne Moore and Elizabeth Bishop." How predictable, safe and, surprise: they're all dead. Even Craig Raine, a reactionary member of the establishment if ever there was one (who defended Eliot so vehemently against charges of anti-semitism), recently called Brodsky 'mediocre'. It's not bad, just ever so familiar from those days when literary criticism was a medium ruled by Leavisite principles. However dated, Brodsky can be charming, as in In Praise of Boredom where he grandly presents the thesis that Life is Boring, get used to it: "You'll be bored with your work, your friends, your spouses, your lovers, the view from your window, the furniture or wallpaper in your room, your thoughts themselves." He suggests thoroughly plunging into the boredom and coming out the other side. Good advice. Or rather touching as in
