Senator Penny Williams visits with OSSM students. Nobel Laureate Inaugural Speaker For Senator Penny Williams
Distinguished Lecture Series
OKLAHOMA CITY -Long-time education champion Senator Penny Williams is being honored with a lecture series bearing her name. "The Senator Penny Williams Distinguished Lecture Series" has been established and endowed by friends of Senator Williams. This series will bring internationally known lecturers to the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics (OSSM) to interact with its students, faculty and supporters. Federal Judge Robert Henry, who is also a former Oklahoma Attorney General and legislator, was among those involved in creating the lecture series. "Penny's commitment to excellence caused her to introduce the bill creating OSSM. Thus, I can't think of anything more fitting to honor her than a lecture series dedicated to continuing and further advancing educational excellence. And, I can't think of a better inaugural lecturer than Dr. Baruch Blumberg. His discovery of the "Australia antigen" led first to a test that allowed us to protect our blood supply by identifying those blood donors who were carrying Hepatitis B, and subsequently, to a vaccine for that virus that has saved millions of lives. His continued work with NASA in the emerging field of astrobiology shows that his vision has not dimmed. He epitomizes scientific excellence and will be an inspiration to our bright young students at OSSM," said Henry.

The second, a history of Peninsular literature from the reign of Augustus to 1500, marks the emergence of modern bibliography and the transformation of literary history into a scholarly discipline. A second edition (1788; vol. 1 of the Nova dated 1783), with additions from Antonio's manuscripts, is still consulted.

IN TIME OF PLAGUE
THE HISTORY AND SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES OF LETHAL EPIDEMIC DISEASE
Volume 55 No. 3 (Autumn 1988)
Arien Mack, Editor
Table of Contents Notes on Contributors Ordering information Editor's Introduction The papers in this issue were presented at a public conference entitled "In Time of Plague: The History and Social Consequences of Lethal Epidemic Disease," sponsored by Social Research An exhibit, "In Time of Plague: Five Centuries of Infectious Disease in the Visual Arts," was held at the American Museum of Natural History in conjunction with the conference. It was made possible by a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. Its curators were Daniel Fox, professor of humanities in medicine, State University of New York, Stonybrook, and Diane R. Karp, art historian and freelance curator. The exhibit was jointly sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History and the New School for Social Research. The medal pictured on the cover is one of the artifacts from that exhibit. The conference was organized with the expectation that an open discussion among scientists and scholars might help to place the current alarming outbreak of AIDS in perspective by considering it in the context of the social history of past lethal epidemics. We thought that focusing attention on the many ways in which diseases, particularly catastrophic infectious and contagious diseases, are and have been both biologically and socially defined might help lead the way to a calmer and more effective public response to the problem.
