Luis Walter Alvarez
(Born June 13, 1911, San Francisco. Deceased Sept. 1, 1988, Berkeley, Calif.), American experimental physicist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1968 for work that included the discovery of many resonance particles (subatomic particles having extremely short lifetimes and occurring only in high-energy nuclear collisions). Alvarez studied physics at the University of Chicago (B.S., 1932; M.S., 1934; Ph.D., 1936). He joined the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley, in 1936, becoming professor of physics in 1945 and professor emeritus in 1978. In 1938 Alvarez discovered that some radioactive elements decay by orbital- electron capture; i.e., an orbital electron merges with its nucleus, producing an element with an atomic number smaller by one. In 1939 he and Felix Bloch made the first measurement of the magnetic moment of the neutron, a characteristic of the strength and direction of its magnetic field. Alvarez worked on microwave radar research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge (1940-43), and participated in the development of the atomic bomb at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, Los Alamos, N.M., in 1944-45. He suggested the technique for detonating the implosion type of atomic bomb. He also participated in the development of microwave beacons, linear radar antennas, the ground-controlled landing approach system, and a method for aerial bombing using radar to locate targets. After World War II Alvarez helped construct the first proton linear accelerator and developed the liquid hydrogen bubble chamber in which subatomic particles and their reactions are detected.

Also being honored is an outstanding member of the School's most recently graduated class. The 50th Anniversary reception will be held on Tuesday, April 8 , in Columbia University's Low Memorial Library. The five honorees are Baruj Benacerraf ('42) : Winner of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1980 and currently special advisor to the president of the Dana- Farber Cancer Institute, Benacerraf held various research and teaching positions at Columbia University, Harvard Medical School, the National Institutes of Health, and New York University before being named president and chief executive officer of Dana-Farber in 1980. His many honors include the National Medal of Science and the Charles A. Dana Award for Pioneering Achievements in Health and Education. Mary McFadden ('59) : Designer Mary McFadden was associated with Vogue magazine for several years before forming Mary McFadden, Incorporated. Oscar Arias Sánchez
Nobel Prize, Peace, 1987
Former Costa Rican President Oscar Arias Sánchez was awarded the 1987 Nobel Prize for Peace in recognition of his leadership in helping to end the armed conflicts that tore apart Central America in the 1980s. Dr. Arias was born in Costa Rica in 1941. He studied in the United States, Costa Rica and England, where he received a doctorate with his thesis on the subject of "Who Rules Costa Rica?" His political career began in 1970, when he served as assistant to ex-President José Figueres, who was then seeking re-election. When Mr. Figueres was elected in 1972, he appointed Dr. Arias as Minister of National Planning and Political Economy. In 1975, Dr. Arias' National Liberation Party elected him International Secretary and in 1979, General Secretary. Dr. Arias was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1978, but withdrew in 1981 to work for presidential candidate Luis Alberto Monge, who won the election. In 1985, Dr. Arias was nominated as the party's presidential candidate and won the following year. As President, Dr. Arias intervened against the activities of U.S.-backed Contras in Costa Rican territory and engaged Nicaragua and other Central American countries in a peace-making process. In May 1986, he met the presidents of Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras to discuss peace proposals that had been worked out by the Contadora group. Though they did not reach a full agreement, early in 1987 Dr. Arias succeeded in calling a new meeting. He submitted his own peace plan, which departed in some respects from the Contadora approach. The accord approved by the five heads of state in Guatemala on August 7, 1987, was based on the Arias plan.

Videos Statement of 100 Nobel Laureates OSLO, Norway-December 7, 2001 (OTVNewswire) At the Nobel Peace Prize Centennial Symposium here yesterday celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Nobel prize, 100 Nobel laureates have issued a brief but dire warning of the "profound dangers" facing the world. Their statement predicts that our security depends on immediate environmental and social reform. The following is the text of their statement: THE STATEMENT: The most profound danger to world peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust.

against the aggression on Croatia
Many people throughout the world contributed to the international recognition of Croatia (January 15, 1992). We would like to present a list of 104 Nobel prize winners (in alphabetic order) who signed an appeal to stop the aggression of the Yugoslav Army on Croatia that started in 1991 (The New York Times, January 14th, 1992). We do this we the feeling of deepest gratitude.
An Appeal by 104 Nobel Laureates
FOR PEACE IN CROATIA
During the past several weeks the Yugoslav Army has escalated its war against Croatia. Dozens of villages have been razed. Many historical monuments have been destroyed. Several cities, including Croatia's capital of Zagreb, have been bombed. Over 2,000* people have been killed. The undeclared war has already produced more than 100,000* refugees. The violence and destruction unleashed in Croatia is on a scale unknown in Europe since the Second World War. Innocent civilians are massacred. Hospitals and places of worship are destroyed. Conscience demands that we raise our voices against this senseless war.
  • We appeal to the Western and Eastern governments to stop the Yugoslav Army wanton destruction.
