22. NOBEL LAUREATES WARN AGAINST MISSILE DEFENSE DEPLOYMENT

http://www.fas.org/press/000706-letter.htm
July 6, 2000
President William Jefferson Clinton The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20502 Dear Mr. President: We urge you not to make the decision to deploy an anti-ballistic missile system during the remaining months of your administration. The system would offer little protection and would do grave harm to this nation's core security interests. We and other independent scientists have long argued that anti-ballistic missile systems, particularly those attempting to intercept reentry vehicles in space, will inevitably lose in an arms race of improvements to offensive missiles. North Korea has taken dramatic steps toward reconciliation with South Korea. Other dangerous states will arise. But what would such a state gain by attacking the United States except its own destruction? While the benefits of the proposed anti-ballistic missile system are dubious, the dangers created by a decision to deploy are clear. It would be difficult to persuade Russia or China that the United States is wasting tens of billions of dollars on an ineffective missile system against small states that are unlikely to launch a missile attack on the U.S. The Russians and Chinese must therefore conclude that the presently planned system is a stage in developing a bigger system directed against them. They may respond by restarting an arms race in ballistic missiles and having missiles in a dangerous "launch-on-warning" mode.

BARUJ BENACERRAF
I was born in Caracas, Venezuela, on October 29, 1920 of Spanish-Jewish ancestry. My father, a self-made business man, was a textile merchant and importer. He was born in Spanish Morocco, whereas my mother was born and raised in French Algeria and brought up in the French culture. When I was five years old, my family moved to Paris where we resided until 1939. My primary and secondary education was in French which had a lasting influence on my life. The second World War caused our return to Venezuela, where my father continued to have a thriving business. It was decided that I should pursue my education in the United States, and we moved to New York in 1940. I registered at Columbia University in the School of General Studies , and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1942, having also completed the pre-medical requisites for admission to Medical School. By that time, I had elected to study biology and medicine, instead of going into the family business, as my father would have wanted. I did not realize, however, that admission to Medical School was a formidable undertaking for someone with my ethnic and foreign background in the United States of 1942. In spite of an excellent academic record at Columbia, I was refused admission by the numerous medical schools I applied to and would have found it impossible to study medicine except for the kindness and support of George W. Bakeman, father of a close friend, who was then Assistant to the President of the

Benacerraf, Baruj I was born in Caracas, Venezuela, on October 29, 1920 of Spanish-Jewish ancestry. I was discharged in 1947 and, motivated by intellectual curiosity, decided upon a career in medical research at a time when such a choice was not fashionable. My interest was directed, from my medical student days, to Immunology, and particularly to the mechanism of hypersensitivity. I had suffered from bronchial asthma as a child and had developed a deep curiosity in allergic phenomena. I sought the advice of many scientists, among whom René Dubos at Rockefeller University, John Enders at Harvard Medical School, and Jules Feund at the Public Health Research Institute in New York, to whom I had been recommended by members of the faculty in Richmond. During this period also I managed a New York bank, the Colonial Trust Company, which had been bought by my family and associates from Venezuela. However, the success of my laboratory made me realize that I had to choose between a scientific career and my business interests. I made the decision to devote myself solely to my laboratory and my students and to curtail my business career, as I felt the challenges were far greater in my chosen profession. This is precisely the time when I initiated the studies in Immunogenetics that resulted in my being awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Premios Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina
Premio Nobel

Diversity in Biology
Infusing Diversity in the Curriculum Project
by Michael J. Farabee, Ph.D., Estrella Mountain Community College So much of the biology studied in introductory classes deals with the accomplishments of a small group of people: white males. There are several reasons for this, including the exclusion of women from academe for many years. This has changed. Please visit the links below and answer a short series of questions pertaining to the significance of achievements by the following people:
Mary Anning
Mary Anning (1799-1847) During her lifetime Mary Anning, an untrained Englishwoman who supported her family by fossil collecting, made a number of significant discoveries, including the first ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs. Despite her beimng hailed as "the greatest fossilist ever", her life has been made the subject of several books and articles, yet little of her life is really known. This website at the Museum of Paleontology and the University of California at Berkeley offers a short biography and listing of her contributions to the early days of paleontology. From Caracas to Stockholm
A Life in Medical Science
Baruj Benacerraf, M.D., Nobel Laureate
How did a child born into a nominally Jewish family of Spanish-speaking textile importers in Caracas, Venezuela, struggle with a learning disability to become educated at the famed Lycee in Paris and eventually reach the pinnacle of world recognition in medical research? Read how the young Benacerraf, his education cut short by Nazi terror in Europe, anxiously sought opportunities elsewhere. Feigning interest in the family business on the pretext of securing technical training in the U. S., Benacerraf's intellectual curiosity was captured by studies in science and medicine In this delightful and often humorous memoir, Dr. Benacerraf discusses the colorful history of his family and how they shaped his values and goals, his marriage to life-partner Annette, and his life in medical research. He reflects on his decision to specialize in immunology, the training of scientists at Harvard, recent advances in medicine, the research of his colleagues, his move to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and his struggles as its chief administrator, and the extraordinary experience of winning the Nobel Prize in medicine (with G. D. Snell) in 1980. Dr. Benacerraf offers valuable insights into the future of education in general and medical education in particular, both tempered with great compassion and hope for humanity Baruj Benacerraf (Boston, MA) is Fabyan Professor Emeritus of Comparative Pathology at Harvard Medical School, and President Emeritus of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston
