Biographies of Women Mathematicians
Welcome to the web page for biographies of women in mathematics. These pages are part of an on-going project by students in mathematics classes at Agnes Scott College, in Atlanta, Georgia, to illustrate the numerous achievements of women in the field of mathematics. There are biographical essays or comments on most of the women mathematicians and some photos (which look best at more than 256 colors). Our goal is for this list to continue to expand, and for more biographies to be completed. We also welcome contributions of biographical information or essays from those outside Agnes Scott College. If you are interested in contributing an essay, please send your contribution to Larry Riddle . Comments, suggestions, or corrections can also be sent to this address.

Research
I'm interested in just about anything related to the existence of latin squares with particular properties (such as orthogonality, subsquares, intersection, completion) and ... just about anything related to graph decompositions. Usually decompositions of the complete graph (or complete directed graph), but more recently decompositions of regular graphs, trees, etc. Particular interests are orthogonal decompositions and the designs related to them, and decompositions of line-graphs. Other interests include edge-colouring problems with a Ramsey Theory flavour. For example, colour the edges of the complete graph and then determine the minimum number of disjoint monochromatic subgraphs of a particular type needed to cover the vertices.
Other Math-related Interests
Making math accessible to a broad audience through public lectures and helping people discover they actually can do mathematics - and moreover that they do it regularly in their daily lives. Trying to show that mathematics is not what most people think it is. It is not memorization (I dont know any mathematician who knows more than the smallest handful of trig identities!), rules (there are many ways to reach an answer, and sometimes there are many answers) or arithmetic (we use calculators - we don't do the additions in our heads either!). Mathematics is a logical and (more often than you expect) intuitive search for patterns. Breaking down the barriers between researchers and mathematics teachers from kindergarten through university so that we can recognise our common interests in mathematics, its uses and its teachings. Encouraging men and women both to recognize that women have a place in mathematics; supporting women as mathematicians (from kindergarten on) and ensuring they are not overlooked.

Mathematicians Female mathematicians: women in math from ancient times through recent years. Mathematics fields include arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, number theory, advanced algebra and topology. Top 10 Women in Math History
Mathematics as a field of science or philosophy was largely closed to women before the twentieth century. However, from ancient times through the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century, a few women have achieved notably in mathematics. Here are ten women of note in early math their life stories and their achievements documented on this site. Maria Agnesi Oldest of 21 children and a child prodigy who studied languages and math, she wrote a textbook to explain math to her brothers which became a noted textbook on mathematics.

Description:
You know the theorems and proofs. You've seen the charts and graphs. Now meet the women behind the mathematics. At this site, you can learn about the fascinating lives of women like Hypatia, who lived in Egypt from about 370 - 415 and worked with conic sections, influencing the work of Descartes and Newton. Mary Everett Boole, who lived in both England and France from 1832-1916, invented string geometry, a tool which helps students understand geometry concepts. Florence Nightingale, most famous for her work in nursing, also broke ground in the use of data collection and interpretation for describing 'social phenomena' like casualties in war. She also developed the polar-area diagram, now known as the pie chart.
How You Can Use This Source:
  • Take some time to learn about some of the women who have made important contributions to what you now study as 'mathematics'.
  • Find out what influenced these women in their mathematical careers.
