Yes, Hamlet, I said "folks", because Bourbaki is man-y. Hype this. In the 50's, some mathematicians at the University of Nancy, in Nancy, France, worried because many advances in mathematics were not appearing in textbooks. So they decided to do something about this. But, deciding it was a big job, requiring several mathematicians, but should look like the work of only one, they thought about using a pseudonym. What pseudonym? A short time before this, students had pulled off an elaborate joke. Faculty and students of U. of Nancy were invited to hear the eminent physicist, Nicholas Bourbaki, speaking at one of the auditoriums. But the speaker appeared to have had a little too much dinner wine. After babbling incoherently, he collapsed into a snoring nap, so the audience tiptoed out. Next day, the joke was revealed and the reason for the name of the speaker, assumed by a student in disguise. The name "Bourbaki" was taken from a stupid General Bourbaki of World War I who suffered a disastrous defeat. This suggested to the Nancy mathematicians the pseudonym for their collective writings: "Nicholas Bourbaki". The next few years, several volumes issued forth, under this authorship. One amusing item was the appearance of French road signs on the edge of the text, warning about "difficulties of travel" through the text.

Régis Décamps Les raisons de sa naissance Nicolas Bourbaki n'est pas un individu mais un groupe de mathématiciens, fondé en 1935 par Henri Cartan, Claude Chevalley, Jean Delsarte, Jean Dieudonné et André Weil, tous élèves de l'ENS. L'âge limitre est fixé à 50 ans, les membres sont donc périodiquement renouvelés ; Laurent Schwartz, Alexandre Grothendieck, Jean-Pierre Serre, etc. en ont fait partie. Bourbaki souhaitait améliorer l'apprentissage de l'analyse en France, et redonner de la vitalité aux mathématiques françaises qui semblaient mortes comparées au dynamisme d'Outre-Rhin. Si aujourd'hui l'oeuvre de Bourbaki semble anti-pédagogique pour certains, elle était à l'époque révolutionnaire, introduisant des notations cohérentes, reprenant toutes les mathématiques à leur base, dans une profonde unité d'ensemble. Beaucoup de mathématicien ont été séduits par le style de Bourbaki dans son imposant (plus de 7000 pages) traité Eléments de mathématique (le singulier mathématique souligne l'unité). Ce travail a certainement influencé la réforme des programmes de 1970. Même si les membres du groupe Bourbaki n'ont pas le droit de se dévoiler, il est clair que les plus grands noms y ont figurés. Encore aujourd'hui Bourbaki participe au rayonnement des mathématiques françaises et l'association Bourbaki continue d'organiser tous les ans (trois fois par ans) une rencontre internationnale à laquelle sont conviés plus de 200 mathématiciens à venir écouter des exposés dont les orateurs et les thèmes ont été choisis par Bourbaki. Cependant l'avenir de l'immortel mathématicien est chaque jour un peu plus remis en cause ; nombreux sont ceux qui pensent que le tome de 1998 sera le dernier.

Après de brillantes études secondaires dans son pays natal, Nicolas Bourbaki suivit les cours de l'université de Kharkov, puis obtint en 1906 une bourse qui lui permit d'entendre à Paris les cours de H. Poincaré, et à Göttingen ceux de D. Hilbert ; ces derniers exercèrent sur sa pensée la plus profonde influence. En 1910, il soutint sa thèse à l'université de Kharkov. Nommé privatdozent (chargé de cours) à l'université de Dorpat (Tartu) en 1913, il s'y marie deux ans plus tard ; une seule fille, Betti, mariée en 1938 à un chasseur-explorateur, est née de cette union. He entered St Cyr, and in 1836 joined the Zouaves, becoming lieutenant of the Foreign Legion in 1838, and aide-de-camp to King Louis Philippe. It was in the African expedition that he first came to the front. A man who called himself Regnier,i about the 21st of September, appeared at Hastings, to seek an interview with the refugee empress Eugénie, and failing to obtain this he managed to get from the young prince imperial a signed photograph with a message to the emperor Napoleon. This he used, by means of a safe-conduct from Bismarck, as credentials to Marshal Bazaine, to whom he presented himself at Metz, telling him on the empress’s alleged authority that peace was about to be signed and that either Marshal Canrobert or General Bourbaki was to go to Hastings for the purpose. Bourbaki at once went to England, with Prussian connivance, as though he had a recognized mission, only to discover from the empress at Hastings that a trick had been played on him; and as soon as he could manage he returned to France.
