  • A workshop in Thailand
In January 1997 a Workshop on Analysis was held in Suranaree University of Technology, Thailand. Professor Huzihiro Araki was the Japanese organizer and chose eight fields of analysis: operator algebras, function algebras, harmonic analysis, wavelets, hyperfunctions, Wiener functional integrals, solvable lattice models, and non-commutative differential geometry. I was invited to give an introductory lecture on hyperfunctions. As newspapers have reported, the spectacular success of Thai economy can be felt during a short drive between the airport and the city center of Bangkok. Applied Science has been developing satisfactorily in Thailand. However, the growth of theoretical science has lagged behind and Thailand is not doing much in mainstream theoretical sciences, especially in mathematics. At this stage in the progress of the country, Thailand felt a need to promote pure mathematics. With this in mind, Professor Sidney Mitchel, an American professor working at Chulalokorn University, organized the workshop.

I still need to organize my pictures! Its a hassle since when I started this page, I just dumped them on my sever space and I have to categorize ALL of them now. Anyway, one big thing has been on my mind lately, when I'm not stressing about school. Its whether I should start the rock climbing. Join Stone Garden and spring for some zapatos. Hmm... I'll let it marinate some more. I'm enrolled for next quarter: STAT 423, MATH 408, ECON 400 or 404 and ARCH 210... yay.. Idea from the BCAG eBusiness Website: Old Postings

Social Action Sermon - March 1999
    "Exploring Diversity"
by Pat Barrett, Social Action Committee member, and Dawn Leonard Tripp, Co-Chair
As the Social Action Committee cast about for ideas for this service, we turned to the leadership at the Unitarian Universalist Association for guidance. One program we found was "Journey Toward Wholeness," an anti-oppression and multiculturalism initiative five years in the making. The Faith in Action department of the UUA developed a "Journey Toward Wholeness Sunday" program for the first quarter of this year. Its purpose was to provide congregations with an opportunity to raise funds: two-thirds of which they could use for anti-racism training and racial justice programs, and one-third of which the UUA would collect for related projects. Ultimately, we chose "Exploring Diversity" as today’s theme. Why? Because we keep hearing it again and again: in our own monthly meetings, during last year’s visioning dialogue’s, in circles of conversation throughout our church, in the community and on TV. People here say they would like to see more diversity in our church. But what do we

Re: Proposal to Hold the International Congress of Mathematicians 2002 in Beijing, China It is my honor, on behalf of the Chinese Mathematical Society (CMS), to earnestly apply to you and through you to the Site Selecting Committee of IMU for hosting the International Congress of Mathematicians 2002 in Beijing, China. This application has received broad support not only from CMS members but also from the Chinese Government and the institutions concerned. In ancient China, brilliant achievements were made in mathematics. In this century, modern mathematics has also witnessed fair spread and healthy development in China. In this process, Prof. Loo-keng Hua, Prof. S.S. Chern, and a number of prominent Chinese mathematicians have made outstanding contributions. In the past decade or so, special progress in research and education of mathematics has been achieved, and academic exchanges were considerably increased between Chinese mathematicians and their overseas counterparts.

    Media Statement
    by
Lim Kit Siang (Petaling Jaya, Saturday)
The Cabinet next Wednesday should seriously consider the DAP’s “Formula 1-2-3” as the route to academic excellence for Malaysian students in mathematics, science and English and to build up the country’s international competitiveness in the era of globalization, liberalization and information and communications technology. Formula “1-2-3”, which is a three-pronged objective to firstly, raise English proficiency, secondly, maintain high mathematics and science standards and thirdly, preserve mother-tongue proficiency, is the most sensible and sound education policy to pursue for a multi-racial, multi-lingual, multi-cultural and multi-religious society like Malaysia. I had previously cited the examples of Nobel Science Laureates, like the 1998 Nobel Laureate in physics, Daniel Tsui Chye, the 1986 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Yuan T. Lee, and the other Nobel Laureates in Physics Samuel C.C. Ting (1976), Chen Ning Yang (1957) and Tsung-Dao Lee (1957) who achieved academic excellence and international renown because they had their earlier grounding in mathematics and science in their mother-languages in primary and secondary education, subsequenhtly acquiring English proficiency.

Ok, maybe that's an exaggeration. I just wanted to show off the font... Most of the mathematicans we hear about come from ancient Greece or Rome or something, so mathematicians only seem to exist in the past, and for us in Asia, in far away lands. So now, we shall introduce 2 Asian mathematicians who lived in this century. Chang Sun-Yung Alice Abu Allah Mohammad ibn Jabir al'Battani Chang Sun-Yung Alice was born in Ci-an, China on the 24th of March, 1948. In 1970 she received her B.S. degree from the National University of Taiway. She came to the United States to pursue graduate studies in mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, earning her Ph.D in 1974. Chang spent one year at the State University of New York at Buffalo, then became Hedrick Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the Univesity of California, Los Angeles, during 1975-77. She then taught at the University of Maryland for three years before returning to the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1980 as an associate professor, later promoted to full professor.     Chang's research interests are in the fields of nonlinear partial differential equations and isospectral geometry. In 1995 she was awarded the

This book is the proceedings of the conference "Algebraic Geometry in East Asia" which was held in International Institute for Advanced Studies (IIAS) during August 3 to August 10, 2001. As the breadth of the topics covered in this proceedings demonstrate, the conference was indeed successful in assembling a wide spectrum of East Asian mathematicians, and gave them a welcome chance to discuss current state of algebraic geometry.

Many Blogger bloggers are having trouble posting because of " Error 503: Unable to load template file: /home." The following little algorithm has almost always worked for the Man Without Qualities to correct Error 503. 1. Try to publish, but notice appears: " Error 503: Unable to load template file: /home." 2. Click on "Template." 3.Make no changes in your Template. 4. Click on "Save Changes." After a few moments' delay, this should return the screen to the original split-screen "Posts" setup, and a little yellow "Publish" button should appear on the far right in the middle of the screen. 5. Click on the yellow "Publish" button. Wait a few moments. [If "Publish" button is not there, bring your post up onto the upper half of the screen and click on "Post and Publish"]
