Shannon, Claude Elwood (1916-2001)

This entry contributed by Rethnakaran Pulikkoonattu American mathematician and father of information theory . Claude Elwood Shannon was born in Gaylord, Michigan on April 30, 1916 to Claude Elwood and Mabel Wolf Shannon. Shannon's father Claude, was a judge in Gaylord, a small town with a population of about three thousand, and his mother Mabel was the principal of the local high school. Although he didn't work in the field of mathematics, Shannon proved to be mathematically precocious. Although there was not much scientific influence from Shannon's father, he received scientific encouragement from his grandfather, who was an inventor and a farmer whose inventions included the washing machine and farming machinery. While at MIT, Shannon studied with both Wiener and Bush. Noted as a 'tinkerer,' he was ideally suited to working on the Differential Analyzer, and would set it up to run equations for other scientists. At Bush's suggestion, Shannon also studied the operation of the analyzer's relay circuits for his master's thesis. This analysis formed the basis for Shannon's influential 1938 paper "A Symbolic Analysis of Relay and Switching Circuits," in which he put forth his developing theories on the relationship of symbolic logic to relay circuits. This paper, and the theories it contained, would have a seminal impact on the development of information processing machines and systems in the years to come.

Mathematicians Female mathematicians: women in math from ancient times through recent years. Mathematics fields include arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, number theory, advanced algebra and topology. Top 10 Women in Math History
Mathematics as a field of science or philosophy was largely closed to women before the twentieth century. However, from ancient times through the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century, a few women have achieved notably in mathematics. Here are ten women of note in early math their life stories and their achievements documented on this site. Maria Agnesi Oldest of 21 children and a child prodigy who studied languages and math, she wrote a textbook to explain math to her brothers which became a noted textbook on mathematics.

    Against All Odds
Evelyn Sander Women Becoming Mathematicians: Creating a Professional Identity in Post-World War II America. Margaret A. M. Murray. xviii + 277 pp. MIT Press, 2000. $29.95. W omen are still underrepresented in mathematics, as well as in most other hard sciences and engineering. As careers in these disciplines become increasingly important and prestigious—and as careers involving quantitative thinking become ubiquitous—there is much research and speculation about this gender disparity and how to fix it. Rather than concentrate on what is going wrong, Margaret A. M. Murray takes the point of view that we should learn from success stories. Women Becoming Mathematicians is based on Murray’s interviews with 36 women who completed a Ph.D. in mathematics between 1940 and 1959; the ratio of women to men among those granted that degree was lower during this period than at any other time in the 20th century. The book illustrates many of the significant changes that took place in academia (and in society as a whole) during the careers of the interviewees. In some cases, the women benefited: After receiving their Ph.D.s, several of them were able to make important contributions to new disciplines, such as statistics and computer science. In addition, in contrast to women college professors of the previous generation, who were under pressure to stay unmarried and to dedicate all of their time to teaching and to the college, three-quarters of the women interviewed were married, and half had children.
