A substance can be anything that is ingested in order to produce a high, alter one's senses, or otherwise affect functioning. The most common substance thought of in this category is alcohol although other drugs, such as cocaine, marijuana, heroin, ecstasy, special-K, and crack, are also included. Probably the most abused substances, caffeine and nicotine, are also included although rarely thought of in this manner by the layman.

Other theories involve the use of substances as a means to cover up or get relief from other problems (e.g., psychosis, relationship issues, stress), which makes the dependence or abuse more of a symptom than a disorder in itself.

Substance-Related Disorders The term Substance-Related Disorders refers to disorders caused by the ingestion of any drug which can be abused, including prescribed medications and alcohol as well as illicit substances. Generally, a substance-related disorder includes the purposeful ingestion of a substance with the goal of altering one's internal state. At lower levels of ingestion this pattern is considered to be abuse and as the pattern progresses, with increasing tolerance, dependency on the substance is deemed to have developed. Substance related disorders are characterized by repeated use or abuse of substances that results in a pattern of behavioral, physiological and cognitive symptoms that have negative, often devastating effects on the persons ability to function in everyday life and on interpersonal relationships. The disorders progress from substance use to abuse and finally dependence. In the latter stage the person often becomes so consumed by the need for the substance that its pursuit is the number priority. Loss of job, financial strain and sometimes the engagement in criminal activity are the results. For more information on Substance-Related-Disorders go to: www.health.org

Web Resources Project I have had many past experiences performing searches on the web for various other class
projects and papers. What I have come to learn is that one should plan to allocate a
significant amount of time (i.e., hours) if one wants to do a truly thorough search. The web is
filled with so much information that it can feel somewhat overwhelming and confusing. For this Web Resources Project, I decided to use all of the common search engines
suggested on the instruction sheet. I entered the keywords, “substance disorders,” in each
one of the search boxes. Some of the first web sites that I encountered, reviewed, and
considered as possibilities were: http://www.ncadd.org/ (National Council on Alcoholism and
Drug Dependence, Inc.); http://www.samhsa.gov/cmhs/cmhs.htm (The Center for Mental
Health Services Information Page); http://www.health.org/ (Prevline); and
http://www.alcoholics-anonymous.org/econtent.html
(Alcoholics Anonymous Web Site). Finally, I came across a relevant site that I found using the engine, http://www.altavista.com

CRITICAL PATHWAYS FOR
SUBSTANCE-RELATED DISORDERS
Harry L. Mills, Ph.D. DIAGNOSTIC ISSUES A key distinction in DSM-III-R and in DSM-IV is between dependence and abuse. That distinction is critical to effective planning.
