Teamwork Anger Management Anorexia ... Successful Relationships Narcissistic Personality Disorder A pattern of grandiosity, a need for admiration, and an almost complete lack of empathy. Normally first observed in early adulthood, this disorder normally contains a combination of the following; An exaggerated sense of importance. Exaggerates achievements and talents, even if he or she could be called on the obvious discrepancy. Obsessed with fantasies of success, power, intelligence, and perfect love. Needs to associate with high achievers to support image of himself. Requires excessive attention. Has a sense of being entitled to special treatment. Exploits other people and is insensitive and lacking in empathy. Jealous of others. Arrogant and disrespectful. Narcissism is a defined form of depression, and , as such, has more severe consequences ad is more likely to result in hospitalization. Another group of patients for whom hospitalization is indicated, provided long-term residential treatment is available, are those who have poor motivation for outpatient treatment, fragile object relationships, chronic destructive acting out, and chaotic life-styles. An inpatient program can offer an intensive milieu which includes individual psychotherapy, family involvement, and a specialized residential environment. The structure is physically and emotionally secure enough to sustain the patient with severe ego weakness throughout the course of expressive, conflict-solving psychotherapy. The possibility of a cure is limited and the goal should be to mitigate the worst aspects of the condition. Long term residential treatment in severe cases where motivation is clearly inadequate for outpatient treatment. This situation can improve the possibility of dealing with severe ego weakness through a course of conflict resolving therapy.

Paranoid
Paranoid personality disorder is characterized by a distrust of others and a constant suspicion that people around you have sinister motives. People with this disorder tend to have excessive trust in their own knowledge and abilities and usually avoid close relationships with others. They search for hidden meanings in everything and read hostile intentions into the actions of others. They are quick to challenge the loyalties of friends and loved ones and often appear cold and distant to others. They usually shift blame to others and tend to carry long grudges.
Schizoid
People with schizoid personality disorder avoid relationships and do not show much emotion. They genuinely prefer to be alone and do not secretly wish for popularity. They tend to seek jobs that require little social contact. Their social skills are often weak and they do not show a need for attention or acceptance. They are perceived as humorless and distant and often are termed "loners."
Schizotypal
Many believe that schizotypal personality disorder represents mild schizophrenia. The disorder is characterized by odd forms of thinking and perceiving, and individuals with this disorder often seek isolation from others. They sometimes believe to have extra sensory ability or that unrelated events relate to them in some important way. They generally engage in eccentric behavior and have difficulty concentrating for long periods of time. Their speech is often over elaborate and difficult to follow.

Vulnerability in self-esteem makes individuals with this disorder very sensitive to "injury" from criticism or defeat. Although they may not show it outwardly, criticism may haunt these individuals and may leave them feeling humiliated, degraded, hollow and empty. They may react with disdain, rage, or defiant counterattack. Interpersonal relations are typically impaired due to problems derived from entitlement, the need for admiration, and the relative disregard for the sensitivities of others. Though overweening ambition and confidence may lead to high achievement, performance may be disrupted due to intolerance of criticism or defeat. Criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements) is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions) requires excessive admiration has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations

Table of Contents

    Medical Treatment
    Hospitalization
The hospitalization of patients with severe Narcissistic Personality occurs frequently. For some, such as those who are quite impulsive or self-destructive, or who have poor reality-testing, this is the result of Axis I symptoms which are overlaid upon the personality disorder. Hospitalizations should be brief, and the treatment specific to the particular symptom involved. Small staff-patient groups within the wards, as well as large community meetings, at which feelings are shared and patients' comments taken seriously by staff, and constructive work assignments, recreational activities, and opportunities to sublimate painfully conflictual impulses make the hospital a "holding" environment rather than merely a containing one. The ultimate goals are of effecting a better integrated internal world, more cohesive and modulated self-object representation, and a self-concept less vulnerable to narcissistic injury.

http://alwaysyourchoice.com/ayc/emotional/personality/narcissist.php
Emotional Well Being/Psychiatric Dysfunctions States of well being Personality Disorders Borderline Personality ... Information Narcissistic Personality Disorder Basic Information The background of many narcissists include cold parental figures who project feelings of either indifference or spite towards the child. In the face of this the child will often develop a special talent or "genius" which can provide a refuge from the cold and rejecting parent. The child finds a way to feel worthwhile and will continue to seek this "narcissistic" recognition through adulthood. The double-edged sword is that the narcissist will emulate or look up to successful parental type figures in adulthood, but will find himself lacking in comparison and suffer low self-esteem, depression and fear and will revert to the "grandiose self" where he can devalue, humiliate and attack or degrade those around him. Narcissists can never be enough in comparison to those they admire and find their only relief is being superior to others and keeping them in subservient positions. Symptoms As discussed above the narcissistic personality exhibits:
  • grandiosity entitlement self-importance lack of empathy exploitative behavior
In addition the narcissist is hypersensitive to criticism if he feels rejected and humiliated he will feel justified in retaliation punishing and undermining those he feels have unjustly attacked him.

  • Learn ways to tolerate emotional distress. Distress usually rises to a peak quickly when you're hurt or upset, but if you tolerate the distress and do absolutely nothing about it, then the pain will gradually diminish. Practice making no other response to emotional distress than just to tolerate it.
  • Learn to fail. In other words, practice every day doing the things you find most difficult. Often the things we view as stupid are the things we find most difficult, so practice those things too. Learning that you can fail and survive is important.
  • Play games with people that are better than you, so you can learn how to lose without severe distress.
  • Identify the ways you put other people down. Ask other people to help you do this since it's often easier for other people to see your behavior clearly than for you to see your own. Once you know exactly how you put other people down, stop doing it.
