Kleine-Levin Syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by the need for excessive amounts of sleep (hypersomnolence), (i.e., up to 20 hours a day); excessive food intake (compulsive hyperphagia); and an abnormally uninhibited sexual drive. The disorder primarily affects adolescent males. When awake, affected individuals may exhibit irritability, lack of energy (lethargy), and/or lack of emotions (apathy). They may also appear confused (disoriented) and experience hallucinations. Symptoms of Kleine-Levin Syndrome are cyclical. An affected individual may go for weeks or months without experiencing symptoms. When present, symptoms may persist for days to weeks. In most cases, the symptoms associated with Kleine-Levin Syndrome eventually disappear with advancing age. The exact cause of Kleine-Levin Syndrome is not known. However, researchers believe that in some cases, the disorder may be inherited as an autosomal dominant genetic trait. It is thought that symptoms of Kleine-Levin Syndrome may be related to malfunction of the portion of the brain that helps to regulate functions such as sleep, appetite, and body temperature (hypothalamus). Therefore a doctor can prescribe a medication to a patient, who then does not have an episode for a number of months. There is a biochemist from Boston who has 2 kids who have it, and he has located 2 labs who are willing to research if they can obtain spinal fluid from patients who have this. An article from the University of Amsterdam, in Holland, reports that two boys, just entering their teens, became victims of Kleine-Levin after an attack of a viral illness. Because the syndrome is rare, and very few cases have been studied, the cause isn't known. It has responded favorably to treatment with various amphetamines and other drugs.

Kleine-Levin syndrome is a rare disorder that causes recurring periods of excessive drowsiness and sleep (up to 20 hours per day). Symptoms, which may last for days to weeks, include excessive food intake, irritability, disorientation, lack of energy, and hypersensitivity to noise. Some patients may also experience hallucinations and an abnormally uninhibited sex drive. Affected persons are normal between episodes, although depression and amnesia may be noted temporarily after an attack. It may be weeks or more before symptoms reappear. Onset is typically around adolescence to the late teens. The disorder is 4 times more common in males than in females. Symptoms may be related to malfunction of the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that governs appetite and sleep.
