Nutritional Support for Hypoglycemia, Diabetes, Weight Loss and Premature Aging
Glucose is the exclusive fuel of the human nervous system and the primary fuel of most of the rest of the systems in the body. Glucose is a type of sugar (a monosaccharide) that is derived from the breakdown of complex carbohydrates and proteins. A healthy level of glucose in the blood is therefore essential to life and health. If the glucose level is too low, the nervous system and muscular system is starved for fuel and begins to malfunction. The first symptoms include weakness, low energy, irritability, being excessively emotional, impaired ability to reason, etc. A blood sugar level below normal is called hypoglycemia. A blood sugar level above normal is called hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia is harmful to all internal organs and tissues and accelerates the aging process by facilitating the formation of chemical bonds between glucose and the proteins found in the body. A clinical condition resulting in hyperglycemia is called diabetes. There are two major types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and type 2 diabetes or non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The primary defect in type 1 diabetes resides in the pancreas, resulting in insulin deficiency and the resulting failure to metabolize glucose. In contrast, type 2 diabetes is predominantly attributable to the inability of the available insulin to work properly and this type of diabetes involves multiple organ systems, including abnormalities of insulin secretion, peripheral (muscle and adipose tissue) and hepatic insulin resistance. Most individuals with type 2 diabetes also suffer from excess body weight or obesity. Obesity often precedes type 2 diabetes and is now recognized as a major risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes which constitutes more than 90% of all cases of diabetes mellitus. Some estimates suggest that there are about 16 million Americans suffering from diabetes, over 90% of them being type 2.

Low Grain and Carbohydrate Diets Treat Hypoglycemia, Heart Disease, Diabetes Cancer and Nearly ALL Chronic Illness.
by Joseph Brasco, MD Page 2 References Unfortunately, the debate over the validity of this concept has primarily been waged in the media and lay publications and not in the scientific journals. Many of the popular books which support this position are gimmicky, and often, lack adequate scientific referencing. Yet, at their core is very important concept limiting the intake of carbohydrates, (especially as cereal grains and starches), will improve human health. Some critics claim that reduced carbohydrate diets are a fashion trend. Well, this so called trend actually dates back some time. Anthropological study of early hominids has concluded that they lived as hunters-gathers. While nuts, seeds, vegetation and fruit made up an important part of the hunter- gather's diet, his mainstay was hunted or scavenged animal prey. More recent evaluations of early man's nutritional patterns by Dr. Loren Cordain, estimate that as much as 65 percent of his calories were derived from animal products. Granted, early man was not eating corn fed Angus beef from Jewel, but he was eating the meat, the organs and the bones of his prey. Essentially, a high protein/fat diet. It was a mere 10,000 years ago (or less) that man began exploiting an agricultural niche.

Neurological Diseases and Syndromes Home Hypoglycemia Aaron Logue Hypoglycemia usually refers to low blood sugar, or glucose. Excess sugar in the bloodstream is taken into the liver (stored as glycogen), fat cells (converted to adipose), and the muscles where it is converted to muscle glycogen. The blood sugar level therefore falls severely because there are only small amount left over in the bloodstream which causes feedback to the hypothalamus and the pituitary and thyroid glands. The normal glucose levels in healthy individuals alternates greatly depending on the amount of time fasting done by each individual. The normal range for healthy individuals is between 70 and 120 mg/dl over a night of fasting. Symptoms of hypoglycemia usually occur when the blood glucose level drops below 55 mg/dl. Adrenaline is commonly released from the body during a hypoglycemic state. The release of adrenaline from the adrenal glands is caused by stimulation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system. usually extract the glucose from the blood in the same manner as oxygen is extracted. In a hypoglycemic situation, there is a significantly small amount of glucose in the blood and therefore the brain cannot receive the proper amount needed. The result of this is that the brain will fall into a coma.4

Younger children with type 1 diabetes have a higher incidence of hypoglycemia-induced nocturnal seizures than older children. With the emphasis on tight glycemic control, adverse effects of hypoglycemia (including neurodevelopmental difficulties) have become a growing concern. Porter and associates studied children with type 1 diabetes receiving twice-daily insulin injections to determine the frequency of nocturnal hypoglycemia and to assess any predictors of this complication. Nocturnal blood glucose levels were measured from samples obtained during the evening or the night immediately before a clinic visit. A questionnaire was administered to review any symptoms that may have occurred during the previous 48 hours and during the study period. Carbohydrate intake on the night of the study was determined. The authors conclude that episodes of nocturnal hypoglycemia may be related to possible neurocognitive sequelae. Care must be taken to avoid glycemic control tight enough to cause episodes of low serum glucose.

Reactive Hypoglycemia (RHG): FM/MPS Perpetuating Factor
Devin Starlanyl, MD

This information may be freely copied and distributed only if unaltered, with complete original content There are three basic types of nutrients. Beef, fish, poultry, cottage cheese and tofu are foods that are largely protein. Butter, cream, and vegetable oils are fats. Vegetables, fruits, grains, pastas, and cereals are carbohydrates (carbos), and so are many so-called "junk" foods, such as candy. These junk foods have little if any nutritional value, and may carry fat as well as carbo. People with reactive hypoglycemia(RHG) are often (but not always) overweight, and unable to lose the extra weight. A fat pad develops on the belly, and won't go away.

HYPOGLYCEMIA
Definition: Hypoglycemia is the medical term for a level of blood glucose (blood sugar) that is too low to meet immediate energy needs of the body. Glucose is a sugar that our bodies use for energy. A normal level of glucose in the blood is between 60-110 mg/dl. Symptoms: Causes: It is important to remember that hypoglycemia is not a disease. It is a condition caused by an underlying problem or disease that prevents the body from maintaining normal levels of glucose in the blood. There are two types of hypoglycemia: fasting and reactive. Fasting hypoglycemia can occur when a person goes without food for eight or more hours. It can be caused by certain underlying diseases (tumors of the pancreas, severe liver disease, adrenal failure) that upsets the body's ability to balance glucose.

Hypoglycemia Visit www.malariasite.com for updated version of this site Hypoglycemia is one of the tricky complications of falciparum malaria and may often go unnoticed, adding to the morbidity and mortality. Hypoglycemia in malaria may be asymptomatic. On the other, many of the clinical manifestations of hypoglycemia are caused by malaria itself or by some of its other complications. Therefore, hypoglycemia, which is easily treatable, may be missed. Added to this, hypoglycemia can occur repeatedly and hence continuous monitoring of blood glucose levels is needed. Causes: 1. Increased consumption of glucose by the host and the growing parasites. (2.) Failure of hepatic gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis as a result of impaired liver function and acidemia and hyperinsulinemia (3.) Stimulation of pancreatic insulin secretion by drugs like quinine. More than one of these factors may be at play in a given patient. It occurs commonly in the following three situations:
  • Severe falciparum infection, especially in young children. Pregnancy with falciparum malaria.

    Hypoglycemia
    Author/s: Paula Ford-Martin
    Definition
The condition called hypoglycemia is literally translated as low blood sugar. Hypoglycemia occurs when blood sugar (or blood glucose) concentrations fall below a level necessary to properly support the body's need for energy and stability throughout its cells.
    Description
Carbohydrates are the main dietary source of the glucose that is manufactured in the liver and absorbed into the bloodstream to fuel the body's cells and organs. Glucose concentration is controlled by hormones, primarily insulin and glucagon. Glucose concentration is also controlled by epinephrine (adrenalin) and norepinephrine, as well as growth hormone. If these regulators are not working properly, levels of blood sugar can become either excessive (as in hyperglycemia) or inadequate (as in hypoglycemia). If a person has a blood sugar level of 50 mg/dl or less, he or she is considered hypoglycemic, although glucose levels vary widely from one person to another.

Webmaster note: The auther of this section is a former sufferer of hypoglycemia, and has recovered from the condition completely. During his bout with low blood sugar, he studied its causes and what could be done to reverse it. His success is the reason he has been asked to write a little about this topic and the Symptoms Of High Low Blood Sugar. Of course, his article focuses on the causes that applied to the type of condition he had. There may be other causes for hypoglycemia that are not addressed here.
Hypogycemia is often thought of as the opposite of diabetes, but is actually related to and rather common in diabetics. It even shares some of the symptoms of diabetes. Also, because low blood sugar can be the result of an imbalanced endocrine system, it.can actually lead to Type II diabetes if left uncontrolled. Also, certain Weight Loss Programs may be at odds with your new low blood sugar. If you are on one of these Weight Loss Programs, you should be able to overcome this problem with the use of some of the products suggested below. Symptoms of hypoglycemia are many, and can include fatigue; general discomfort, uneasiness, or ill feeling (malaise); nervousness, irritability, or even aggression; trembling; headache; unusual hunger; cold sweats; rapid heart beat; blurry or double vision; confusion; convulsions; coma. Other symptoms that may occur are excessive sweating; sleeping difficulty; paleness; muscle pain; memory loss; heart palpitations, or feeling your heartbeat (heartbeat sensations); anxiety and excessive fears; emotional depression; hallucinations; fainting; different size pupils; dizziness.

Prepared for you by Melissa and Popcorn GENERAL RULES OF THUMB FOR TREATING HYPOGLYCEMIA For more in-depth information, go t o: http://www.petdiabetes.org/hypoglycemia.htm Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar is a dangerous condition that must be treated immediately. Also known as insulin shock or insulin reaction, hypoglycemia occurs when there is too much insulin in the body potentially leading to neurological damage and/or death. Knowing how to respond to a hypoglycemic event whether or not symptoms are present can save the life of your diabetic cat. The following general guidelines are intended for those who home test the blood glucose levels in their cats. These guidelines are not intended to replace the advice given by your Veterinarian. It is very important that you discuss any and all treatment options with your cat’s physician BEFORE an event has occurred. SYMPTOMS Cat may meow very loudly, stagger (drunkenness), be glassy eyed, hide in unusual places, be unusually hungry (or in Popcorn’s case, have total disinterest in even favorite foods), be disoriented, show muscle weakness, etc. VERY LOW NUMBERS – WITHOUT SYMPTOMS Retest glucose using a large blood sample to make certain you have enough blood, and if you still get a very low number (under 40-60 mg/dL or 1.9 – 2.2 mmol/L) administer a tablespoon of Karo Syrup – or- one teaspoon liquid glucose –or- one tablespoon honey –or- one tablespoon of sugar syrup and follow with food until the blood glucose numbers rise to an acceptable levels. The syrup can be mixed with wet food or poured over dry if the cat will eat the mixture. If using liquid glucose, dilute with water to a pourable consistency.

Hypoglycemia Description: Low concentration of blood sugar. Cause: May be caused by chemical imbalance, or by liver disease or pancreatic tumors. Useful Supplements: Chromium Copper Magnesium Vitamin B3 ... Zinc Further information: Hypoglycemia is a condition caused by extremely low blood sugar. It occurs when glucose is used too rapidly or not released into the blood quickly enough, or when excessive insulin is released (causing sugars to process too quickly).
While hypoglycemia also occurs on its own, it is often associated with diabetes , and can occur when too much insulin is taken, meals are not eaten often enough, or exercise increases without an increase in food intake.
Symptoms of hypoglycemia include fatigue, trembling, headache, blurred vision, confusion, and sudden irritability.
The best way to avoid hypoglycemia is through regular diet and exercise. Diabetics should follow their prescribed diet and medication schedules.
When hypoglycemia occurs, the first thing to do is have a quick sugary snack. If this does not help, more food, or possibly an injection of glucagon, may be needed.
