The term insulin shock is used to describe severe hypoglycemia that results in unconsciousness Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Hypoglycemia results when your body's glucose is used up too rapidly, when glucose is released into the bloodstream more slowly than is needed by your body, or when excessive insulin is released into the bloodstream. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas in response to increased glucose levels in the blood, which then reduces blood glucose.
Hypoglycemia is relatively common in diabetics. It occurs when too much insulin or oral antidiabetic medication is taken, not enough food is eaten, or from a sudden increase in the amount of exercise without an increase in food intake.

How food affects your glucose, about hypoglycemia, meal plans, points to remember, food measuring.
    http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/diabetes/pubs/eating/nutri.htm

How food affects your blood glucose
Whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, what, when, and how much you eat all affect your blood glucose. Blood glucose is the main sugar found in the blood and the body's main source of energy. If you have diabetes (or impaired glucose tolerance), your blood glucose can go too high if you eat too much. If your blood glucose goes too high, you can get sick. Your blood glucose can also go too high or drop too low if you don't take the right amount of diabetes medicine. If your blood glucose stays high too much of the time, you can get heart, eye, foot, kidney, and other problems. You can also have problems if your blood glucose gets too low (hypoglycemia). Keeping your blood glucose at a healthy level will prevent or slow down diabetes problems. Ask your doctor or diabetes teacher what a healthy blood glucose level is for you.

    30. Hypoglycemia - Ask The Dietitian
Got questions about hypoglycemia? Ask Joanne Larsen, Registered Dietitianand nutrition counselor. I have been diagnosed with hypoglycemia.
    http://www.dietitian.com/hypoglyc.html
    Hypoglycemia
I have been diagnosed with hypoglycemia. My doctor put me on a diet that did not seem to work well (high carbohydrate). Recently, I have consulted a Registered Dietitian who has put me on a strict regimen to get some baseline results. She has put me on a no-sugar, hi-protein low carbohydrate diet (no wheat products, pasta or rice; eating lots of seeds and nuts, vegetables, protein; eating fats-butter or oil with starches such as quinoa, amaranth, millet, potatoes, etc.). I'm wondering if this is a good way to start, because I am frustrated with the limited food choices I have. Also, she has told me that planning to get pregnant until the problem is brought under control may be a bad idea. Can you give me any insight into these issues?
Your doctor was incorrect and the dietitian is following the current medical nutrition therapy for hypoglycemia. She needs to find a baseline amount of carbohydrate that will produce no or infrequent symptoms while providing you with the nutrients you need to meet your Recommended Dietary Allowances . Since hypoglycemia symptoms are in response to food, you should be able to stabilize your blood sugar by regulating your carbohydrate intake.

Department of Physiology Faculty of Medicine University of Toronto Toronto, Ontario, Cananda. P roject Title: Leptin and The Hypothalamo-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis (HPA) in Streptozotocin (STZ) Diabetic Rats. R esearch: H ypoglycemia is a major complication of type 1 diabetes mellitus, and is the predominant limiting factor in the improvement of glycemic control. In type 1 diabetes, hypoglycemia arises from the interplay of excess insulin and deficient counterregulation. Leptin per se or in combination with insulin treatment may normalize the basal HPA activity and the counterregulatory. Furthermore, leptin’s ability to increase insulin sensitivity can lead to a decrease in exogenous insulin, thus minimizing the possibility of antecedent hypoglycemia and the impaired counterregulatory responses to acute hypoglycemia in Type I diabetes. I have shown that leptin normalization without insulin treatment can increase HPA activity and epinephrine (EPI) release while decreasing norepinephrine levels in STZ-diabetic rats. Most interestingly, following leptin normalization STZ-diabetic rats demonstrated a decreased diabetes-associated hyperphagia.

    http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/endo/pubs/addison/addison.htm

Addison's disease is a rare endocrine or hormonal disorder that affects about 1 in 100,000 people. It occurs in all age groups and afflicts men and women equally. The disease is characterized by weight loss, muscle weakness, fatigue, low blood pressure, and sometimes darkening of the skin in both exposed and nonexposed parts of the body. Addison's disease occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough of the hormone cortisol and in some cases, the hormone aldosterone. For this reason, the disease is sometimes called chronic adrenal insufficiency, or hypocortisolism. Cortisol is normally produced by the adrenal glands, located just above the kidneys. It belongs to a class of hormones called glucocorticoids, which affect almost every organ and tissue in the body. Scientists think that cortisol has possibly hundreds of effects in the body. Cortisol's most important job is to help the body respond to stress. Among its other vital tasks, cortisol:
    • helps maintain blood pressure and cardiovascular function;

... References The most serious side effect of too much insulin is hypoglycemia, or low blood glucose. Hypoglycemia can be a life-threatening, even fatal condition.
    Classic signs of hypoglycemia
    • lethargy (lack of energy) weakness head tilting "drunkedness" - wobbling when walking, unbalanced hunger restlessness shivering ataxia - usually lack of muscular coordination, but maybe changes in head and neck movements disorientation stupor convulsions or seizures coma
The occurrence of signs depends on how far the bg drops and on how fast the blood glucose drops.
Owners of diabetic cats have also reported observing these signs
    • sleepiness unable to wake the cat easily when it is sleeping. vomiting glassy eyes - it may look like it is staring into space laying, sleeping, or curled up in an unusual location of the house meowing, crying, yowling, or vocalizing in a way that is unusual for your cat some cats get aggressive drooling coughing
Owners of diabetic dogs have also reported observing these signs
    • sweating - check the nose and the paw pads.

The Biology of Violence Serotonin, Alcoholism, Hypoglycemia By Paul Rossby
This information or any portion may not be copied or disseminated in any form or by any means or downloaded or stored in an electronic database or retrieval system without the express written consent of the American Bar Association. An increasing body of scientific evidence, collected over the last 20 years, indicates that there is a link between low levels of the brain chemical serotonin and deficient impulse control leading to intermittent explosive disorder, pyromania, suicide, and severe unrestrained aggression (rage). Furthermore, the evidence indicates a connection between low serotonin activity and "type-2" alcoholism. Type-2 alcoholism is an exclusively male disorder that is frequently passed on from fathers to sons and is characterized by the early onset of alcohol consumption and aggressive/violent behavior.
Finally a tendency towards hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is commonly found in impulsively violent offenders.
