Objects viewed from a distance are clearly visible, while relatively near objects appear blurry and out of focus. This condition occurs when the eyeball is too short (from front to back) or when the curvature of the cornea is too flat. These properties prevent light from focusing onto the retina . the focal point of light emitted by an object is a point that actually lies behind the retina. Hyperopia often goes undetected during common vision screenings, such as those conducted in schools. This condition will be detected during a comprehensive exam with an Optometrist. Symptoms Signs of hyperopia include eyestrain, headaches, difficulty with concentration (particularly with fine work and reading), and irritation or nervousness after a sustained period of concentration.

Vision Problems: Hyperopia (Farsightedness)
What is Hyperopia?
Hyperopia, or Farsightedness, occurs when distant objects are usually seen clearly but close ones are not brought into proper focus. Although it means you see far best, it is essentially a focusing problem. Farsightedness or long-sightedness is often referred to by its medical names, hypermetropia or hyperopia. Hyperopia causes the eyes to exert extra effort to see close up. After viewing near objects for an extended period, you may experience blurred vision, headaches and eyestrain. Children who are farsighted may find reading difficult. Hyperopia is not a disease, nor does it mean that you have "bad eyes." It simply means that you have a variation in the shape of your eyeball. The degree of variation will determine whether or not you will need corrective lenses. What causes farsightedness?
Hyperopia most commonly occurs because the eyeball is too short; that is, shorter from front to back than is normal. In some cases, hyperopia may be caused by the cornea having too little curvature. Exactly why eyeball shape varies is not known, but the tendency for farsightedness is inherited. Other factors may be involved too, but to a lesser degree than heredity. How does farsightedness affect sight?

REFRACTIVE SURGERY Refractive surgery's goal is to permanently correct refractive errors ( myopia hyperopia and astigmatism ), so that there is no need for eyeglasses or contact lenses in order to see clearly. The procedure of choice for every patient depends on the type of refractive error . In the following pages you will find information specifically selected for your type of refractive error. There are answers to common questions, detailed descriptions of procedures, results obtained and possible complications: Aditional Information - Symptoms: Myopia (Nearsightedness): Poor distance vision with good near vision.
Hyperopia (Farsightedness): Better distance vision than near vision. Fatigue when uncorrected.
Astigmatism: Poor distance and near vision. "Shadows" beside objects. You will also find information about specific procedures:

In hyperopia, or farsightedness, the eye is shorter that normal. The light rays come together at a point behind the retina, and are therefore out of focus on the retina. Nearby objects can appear blurry, while distant objects are clearer. Very farsighted patients will report that even distant objects appear blurry.

Farsightedness, or hyperopia, occurs when an eyeball is too short for the focusing power of the lens and cornea. This causes light rays to focus behind the retina. As a result, the eye sees distant objects more clearly while near objects appear blurred. It is a condition in which your eye is underpowered. Correction requires a "plus" lens containing additional optical power to permit sharp vision of near objects.
Here's how a spherical contact lens corrects hyperopia. The shape of a hyperopic eye focuses images behind the retina, producing blurred vision of near objects. By increasing the cornea's focusing power, a spherical contact lens corrects the refractive error, creating a single focal point on the retina where vision is sharpest.

This common condition occurs if your eyeball is too short or the cornea has too little curvature, so light entering your eye is focused behind the retina. Common signs of farsightedness includes difficulty in concentrating and maintaining a clear focus on near objects, eye strain, fatigue and/or headaches after close work, aching or burning eyes, irritability or nervousness after sustained concentration. In mild cases of farsightedness, your eyes may be able to compensate without corrective lenses. In other cases, your optometrist can prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses to correct this condition by altering the way the light enters your eyes.

What is hyperopia (farsightedness)?
Just as a camera uses lenses to properly focus light on the film, the human eye uses its lenses - the cornea and the crystalline lens to focus images on the retina. In a normal (emmetropic) eye the focusing power is perfectly matched to the length of the eye.
Picture text:
Perfectly focused (emmetropic) eyes: Light enters eyes and is focused or "refracted" mostly by the cornea and partly by the lens. In eyes that focus properly, light rays falls sharply on the retina. These eyes require no corrective lenses.
Normal Eye

Hyperopia or farsightedness occurs when the eye is too short or the cornea is too flat. There is not enough focusing power in the eye to bring light rays to focus on the retina - the actual focal point would be behind the retina The image formed on the retina is blurred, and additional focusing power is needed. This may be added as spectacles or contact lenses.
Picture text
Farsighted (Hyperopic) eyes: Light rays are not refracted enough and have not yet come to focus when they reach the retina.

    Farsightedness or Hyperopia
Farsightedness, or hyperopia, is a refractive error like astigmatism and myopia. About 25 percent of the population is farsighted. People with hyperopia have difficulty seeing near objects closely, like reading or sewing materials.
    Causes
Farsighted people experience blurry near vision because light rays entering the eye focus behind the retina, the light-sensitive part of the eye, rather than directly on the retina. This happens because the eyeball of a hyperopic person is shorter than normal. Many children are born with farsightedness, which may slowly disappear as the child grows and the eyeball lengthens. However, not all children outgrow their hyperopia. Often confused, hyperopia differs from presbyopia , also a difficulty in seeing up close. Presbyopia is caused by stiffening of the crystalline lens in the eye, due to aging. The less elastic lens cannot focus as well as it once could, so reading becomes difficult. It happens to everyone at some point, usually sometime after age 40. Top
    Symptoms
Hyperopics may complain of headaches, eyestrain, squinting or fatigue when reading, sewing, working on a computer or performing other work within close range. If you experience these symptoms while wearing your glasses or contact lenses, you may need a comprehensive eye exam as well as a new prescription.

    What is Hyperopia?
    Causes and Symptoms

    Treatment
What is Hyperopia? Hyperopia (far-sightedness), myopia (near-sightedness), and astigmatism (distorted vision) are what as know as refractive errors. For proper eyesight, the cornea (the clear window in front of the eye) and the lens (behind the pupil) must properly focus or "refract" light onto the retina (at the back of the eye). If the length or shape of the eye is not ideal, the light may get focused too early or too late leaving a blurred image on the retina. Hyperopia, or far-sightedness, is the ability to clearly see objects at a distance but not those up close. Causes and Symptoms Like near-sightedness, far-sightedness is usually an inherited condition. Young children tend to be hyperopic to some degree although the severity lessens as they age and the eye grows and becomes longer. Children with far-sightedness can often see both distant and close objects because the youthful strength of their lenses can often overcome the shortness of the eye. Non-visual signs such as headaches or a lack of interest in reading may be signs of a high degree of hyperopia.
