From the Division of Viral and Rickettsial Diseases, NCID, CDC What are viral hemorrhagic fevers? Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) refer to a group of illnesses that are caused by several distinct families of viruses. In general, the term "viral hemorrhagic fever" is used to describe a severe multisystem syndrome (multisystem in that multiple organ systems in the body are affected). Characteristically, the overall vascular system is damaged, and the body's ability to regulate itself is impaired. These symptoms are often accompanied by hemorrhage (bleeding); however, the bleeding is itself rarely life-threatening. While some types of hemorrhagic fever viruses can cause relatively mild illnesses, many of these viruses cause severe, life-threatening disease.
The Special Pathogens Branch (SPB) primarily works with hemorrhagic fever viruses that are classified as biosafety level four (BSL-4) pathogens. A list of these viruses appears in the SPB disease information index. The Division of Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases, also in the National Center for Infectious Diseases, works with the non-BSL-4 viruses that cause two other hemorrhagic fevers, dengue hemorrhagic fever and yellow fever.

Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers Fight Fear with Facts... General Description
Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers (VHFs) are a large group of viruses including ebola and yellow fever. VHFs are characterized by fever, weakness and bleeding. All VHFs attack blood vessels, but can cause many different organ systems to fail. VHFs are highly infectious if airborne, but are relatively rare in the U.S. Symptoms
As stated above, VHFs are caused by a large group of viruses. Typically, symptoms appear within 3 to 5 days, with a range of 1 to 14 days. Although the specific time between exposure and illness can be slightly different with each case, all VHFs will have common symptoms, including:
  • flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, weakness, sweating and muscle aches problems with blood vessels, which can cause bruising and bleeding under the skin and/or from eyes and mouth
Severely ill patients may show low blood pressure, shock, seizures and even coma. VHF agents can lead to multi-system organ failure, resulting in death.

CDC Announcement A bout Rift Valley F ever: A large outbreak of Rift Valley fever was reported early in 1998 in Kenya and Somalia. A recent outbreak occurred in southwestern Saudi Arabia and Yemen in 2000. The virus is transmitted primarily by infected mosquitoes and other biting insects and occasionally by contact with the blood or body fluids of infected animals. Travelers are advised to take appropriate precautions to prevent infection. This includes:
  • liberal use of insect repellent.
    wearing long sleeves and pants.
using bednets in areas where outbreaks are occurring.
avoiding contact with livestock in areas where outbreaks are occurring.

Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHF) is a term that refers to a group of illnesses caused by several distinct families of viruses. While some types of hemorrhagic fever viruses cause illnesses that are relatively mild, many of these cause severe, life-threatening diseases with no known cures. Perhaps the most known of this group of diseases is the Ebola virus, made famous by the movie "Outbreak." Hemorrhagic fever viruses are caused by viruses of four distinct families:

Extreme caution should be taken in collecting, preparing for shipment and transporting any material suspected of being contaminated with a biological agent. The following information is meant only as a general guideline. Specimen collection and transport Clinical: Collect whole blood*, serum, tissues. * Whole blood may be frozen. Do not centrifuge suspected VHF specimens because this increases risk to the lab worker. If serum specimens have already been prepared, these can be used. Place specimens in plastic tubes for shipping and storage and be sure that the tubes are sealed and properly labeled. Ship frozen on dry ice. For fatal cases collect liver biopsy, skin biopsy, as well as other tissues for biopsy (spleen, lung, heart, and kidney). Biopsy specimens should be fixed in formalin and stored at room temperature (

Hemorrhagic fevers
Definition
Hemorrhagic fevers are caused by viruses that exist throughout the world. However, they are most common in tropical areas. Early symptoms, such as muscle aches and fever , can progress to a mild illness or to a more debilitating, potentially fatal disease. In severe cases, a prominent symptom is bleeding, or hemorrhaging, from orifices and internal organs. Description
Although hemorrhagic fevers are regarded as emerging diseases, they probably have existed for many years. This designation isn't meant to imply that they are newly developing, but rather that human exposure to the causative viruses is increasing to the point of concern. Hemorrhagic fevers are generally endemic, or linked to specific locations. If many people reside in an endemic area, the number of cases may soar. For example, dengue fever , a type of hemorrhagic fever, affects approximately 100 million people annually. A large percentage of those infected live in densely populated southeast Asia; an area in which the disease vector, a mosquito, thrives. Some hemorrhagic fevers are exceedingly rare, because people very infrequently encounter the virus. Marburg hemorrhagic fever, which has affected fewer than 40 people since its discovery in 1967, provides one such example. Fatality rates are also variable. In cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever-dengue shock The onset of hemorrhagic fevers may be sudden or gradual, but all of them are linked by the potential for hemorrhaging. However, not all cases progress to this very serious symptom. Hemorrhaging may be attributable to the destruction of blood coagulating factors or to increased permeability of body tissues. The severity of bleeding ranges from petechiae, which are pinpoint hemorrhages under the skin surface, to distinct bleeding from body orifices such as the nose or vagina.

Arenaviridae
What are the Arenaviridae?
The Arenaviridae are a family of viruses whose members are generally associated with rodent-transmitted disease in humans. Each virus usually is associated with a particular rodent host species in which it is maintained. Arenavirus infections are relatively common in humans in some areas of the world and can cause severe illnesses. The virus particles are spherical and have an average diameter of 110-130 nanometers. All are enveloped in a lipid (fat) membrane. Viewed in cross-section, they show grainy particles that are ribosomes acquired from their host cells. It is this characteristic that gave them their name, derived from the Latin "arena," which means "sandy." Their genome, or genetic material, is composed of RNA only, and while their replication strategy is not completely understood, we know that new viral particles, called virions, are created by budding from the surface of their hosts’ cells Image, right: Vero E6 tissue culture cell infected with an arenavirus. The term viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) refers to a group of illnesses that are caused by several distinct families of viruses. While some types of hemorrhagic fever viruses can cause relatively mild illnesses, many of these viruses cause severe, life-threatening disease.
What carries viruses that cause viral hemorrhagic fevers?
Viruses associated with most VHFs are zoonotic. This means that these viruses naturally reside in an animal reservoir host or arthropod vector. They are totally dependent on their hosts for replication and overall survival. For the most part, rodents and arthropods are the main reservoirs for viruses causing VHFs. The multimammate rat, cotton rat, deer mouse, house mouse, and other field rodents are examples of reservoir hosts. Arthropod ticks and mosquitoes serve as vectors for some of the illnesses. However, the hosts of some viruses remain unknown Ebola and Marburg viruses are well-known examples.

But Richard Preston seems to have found the perfect candidate for such a tale: Ebola. of the adult population is infected with the virus. And then there are exotic germs that kill a few individuals at a time in a fashion that is easy to become a part of mass-media. Infections result from inhalation of contaminated aerosols of infective rodent excretions. Person to person transmission is associated from direct contact with infective fluids and contaminated materials. Filoviruses - Exact reservoirs and route of transmission for the two filoviruses, Ebola and Marburg, are unknown. Person to person transmission can occur through close contact with bodily fluids or contaminated materials.
