Repligen Receives Approval for Clinical Trial of CTLA4-Ig in ITP
Composition of Matter Patent Allowed on Unique CTLA4-Ig Product Form
NEEDHAM, MA April 18, 2002  (Nasdaq: RGEN) announced today that it has received Medicines Control Agency (MCA) approval to conduct a clinical trial in the United Kingdom to assess the safety and efficacy of CTLA4-Ig in patients with refractory auto-immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). A total of 12 patients with ITP will be treated in a Phase 1/2 open label, dose escalating clinical trial. In 2001, we completed a Phase 1 clinical trial of intravenously administered CTLA4-Ig in 12 normal adults who received escalating doses of CTLA4-Ig in which no serious adverse events or toxicities were observed. "We are pleased to initiate this trial which will serve to evaluate the in vivo activity of CTLA4-Ig in an auto-immune disease patient population," said Walter C. Herlihy, President and CEO of Repligen. "If successful, we believe that CTLA4-Ig may additionally be useful in treating other auto-immune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis." ITP is an auto-immune disease in which the body makes antibodies that target a patient's own blood platelets resulting in premature platelet destruction and an impaired ability to form blood clots. The clinical consequences of ITP are largely dependent on platelet count and range from bruising, mucosal bleeding and nosebleeds to intracranial hemorrhage, which can be fatal. There are approximately 25,000 people in the United States with refractory ITP. CTLA4-Ig is being evaluated in this patient population for its ability to interrupt the body's attack on the platelets. Clinical outcome will be monitored by change in platelet number following treatment.

Novel drug fights autoimmune disorders
By Karl Leif Bates
Life Sciences Institute
A new drug candidate previously found to be effective in reducing harmful side effects of the autoimmune disease lupus also works to prevent arthritis-related complications without damaging normal immune system function. A healthy immune system recognizes friend from foe to protect the body against invading bacteria and viruses. But in lupus and arthritis, the cells of the immune system fail to self-destruct and get out of the way as normal cells should, and can turn against the body's own tissues, damaging joints and organs. No one yet understands why these autoimmune disorders occur, but this drug may offer a way to slow or prevent the damage caused by these misbehaving immune system cells, the authors say. "Our compound is more selective than current drugs," says lead author Gary Glick, a charter faculty member of the Life Sciences Institute, who is the Werner E. Bachmann Collegiate Professor of Chemistry and a professor of biological chemistry in the Medical School. "The lupus treatments in use now just wreck your bone marrow." Current treatments suppress normal immune system function in general, leaving patients more vulnerable to infection. But Bz-423 acts selectively, triggering the self-destruct mechanism in just the immune system cells that are malfunctioning. The bone marrow, where new immune system cells are manufactured, is unharmed by the drug.

What's wrong with Jules anyway?
One day in 1995, my sister, Jules, felt a bit sick pain in her abdomen and was a bit jaundice (yellow-tinted). After a lot of tests, and far too much waiting, she was diagnosed as having Auto-Immune Hepatitis What is this, you say? Well, so did we. The doctors told us little information, for little information is known about it. It is a rare disease, one that has not been studied much. In fact, when we eventually contacted the National Organization for Rare Disorders , we found out that they had no prepared document on it, and could only point us to some medical journal articles. It is important to know that it is not related to what are commonly called "hepatitis" Hepatitis A, B, C. These are afflictions which affect the liver directly, whereas auto-immune hepititis is a problem with the immune system, which in turn affects the liver. Auto-immune hepititis is so recently recognized that it is still called by different names. Apparently it is often mis-diagnosed. Curiously, about 70% of the cases seem to be in young females. My sister was 23 when she was diagnosed with it. No one seems to know the cause of the disease, but

Causes and Treatment of pet allergies. Allergies occur when a pet reacts to food, pollution, chemical, dust, plant pollen, or/and something that is usually harmless to the body. The body tries to protect itself from the allergen. Thus, depending on where the allergy is occuring that organ reacts to the foreign substance. It could be a skin allergy and thus we see rashes or we see diarrhea caused by a food allergy. The reaction we see is the bodies way of expelling the foreign material. Many different types of reactions can occur as a result of the body fighting the foreign substance. This is why it is called an auto-immune disease. Therefore, to treat the pet allergy more information would need to be gathered from the pet and pet's owner. Your veterinarian would need to know a full history. The following are some examples of allergies and how they would be treated. I have also included some more information from my resources regarding cause and treatment of pet allergies. Genentech's research organization focuses its efforts on basic and applied science in Oncology Immunological Disease , and Vascular Biology . Genentech channels much of its substantial scientific resources and expertise in these three directions because there is a clear and compelling need for the development of safer and more efficacious therapies in these disease areas. In addition, the company also remains open to discoveries that may lead to therapies for unmet needs outside of oncology, immunological disease and vascular biology. Oncology Many departments in Research focus on oncology, including Molecular Oncology, Molecular Biology, Protein Engineering, Protein Chemistry, Physiology, Pathology, Bioorganic Chemistry and Bioinformatics. The Molecular Oncology Department's mission, in particular, is to identify novel mediators of critical cellular functions that play a role in cancer. To accomplish this goal, the department integrates research efforts in the following areas of molecular tumor biology: cellular self-renewal, differentiation, and fate-determination; cell cycle control; programmed cell death; and metastatic cell growth. The department aims to develop in vitro systems and in vivo models to elucidate the physiology of these novel mediators and illuminate the possibilities for related therapeutics.

Epstein-Barr and Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction has left me severely debilitated, very weak, and often in pain. I am finding the Pain Control tape very effective, and I feel a tremendous amount of energy surge through my body when I listen to Energy Walk Pain Control Restorative Sleep, and Immunizing to my collection, and experienced wonderful results. Within several months of using them, the aching in my body subsided and my overall energy increased quite substantially. Hemi-Sync tapes continue to give me relief. My sister and I both have CFIDS, and a big part of the syndrome is the inability to get quality sleep. Usually I couldn't sleep without the aid of sleeping pills. Since I began using the Hemi-Sync tape Deep 10 Relaxation , I have been able to nap in the afternoon and have found a good night's sleep for the first time in many years. With the Positive Immunity Program , my sister and I have learned some very good techniques for managing other symptoms.

Organ ageing
The ageing process manifests itself within numerous organs. Central nervous (particularly brain), immune, endocrine ad cardiovascular systems functioning are impaired with age. Alternations in conjunctive and muscular tissues are other familiar ailments common to ageing humans. Brain ageing
Brain damage due to ageing alone (as opposed to pathological ageing) is minimal. Although the ageing brain may lose 100,000 neurons a year, the brain seems to compensate for these losses. This compensation could be positively influenced by intellectual challenge (by mental exercises). In fact, appropriate brain stimulation may cause brain cells (neurons), to branch wildly. This branching causes millions of additional connections (synapses), between brain cells and compensates cell loss.

Vaccines, Infectious Diseases and the Canine Immune System:
The Importance of Weighing the Risk to Benefit Ratio
Vaccines, both in human and animal medicine, have come under attack recently with critics blaming adverse reactions and long-term health disorders on their wide-spread and frequent use. However, most immunologists agree that the risks of disease far outweigh the risks associated with the process of vaccinating. Unfortunately, to those humans and pets who comprise the minority high-risk group for vaccine reactions, the advantages offered by vaccines are understandably overshadowed by fears of debilitating or even fatal adverse reactions. The following article provides a brief overview of the canine immune system and the benefits which canine vaccines provide. Additionally, the controversy of vaccination is examined in relation to underlying health disorders or situations that may increase potential risk to adverse reactions. List of Contents

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder which is characterized by hair loss. Alopecia areata is found equally in both men and women. The disease can occur at any age, including the childhood years. It has been estimated that approximately 2 million people have some form of alopecia.
The hair loss may result in round bald patches on the scalp (alopecia areata) or involve the loss of all facial and scalp hair (alopecia totalis). The loss of all body hair is called alopecia universalis. Alopecia postpartum is characterized by loss of significant hair following pregnancy and is usually temporary. When a patient is diagnosed with alopecia, the first question is usually about whether or not the hair will regrow. The answer is usually vague as each case is different. Regrowth of hair may occur in some patients; and in others, the hair loss is permanent. Back to top Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP)
Chronic ITP is an autoimmune disease of primarily young to middle-age adults that is at least twice as common in females as in males. It is relatively insidious in its onset and is not associated with preceding viral infection. ITP resolves spontaneously only on rare occasions. ITP is a common disorder; in fact, it may be the most common of all the autoimmune diseases in which the cell targeted by the immune system for auto-reaction has been clearly identified.

How we fight bacteria: our immune system vs bacteria
Bacterial infections have always existed, and all organisms that can become infected have learned to deal with them. Plants have primitive defenses against bacteria by producing toxic substances. Higher animals and humans fight a bacterial infection with a more specific immune system.
  • Start here with a user-friendly introduction of The Immune System (Source: Cancerhelp UK)
Our defenses against bacterial infection are active on several levels. Level 1: Prevention and removal. Our first defense is to prevent the survival and entry of pathogenic bacteria Level 2: Non-specific killing of bacteria. As if level 1 defense is not enough (and sometimes it isn't), our body has developed a non-specific, ever active, lethal weapon for those bacteria (and viruses as well), that succeed in entering sites where they can cause harm. This weapon is comprised of a number of compounds in our blood and bodily fluid called complement , that kill most bacteria when it comes into action. Moreover, certain white blood cells inspect our body constantly to scavenge for unwelcome guests, which are eaten alive when discovered. These defenses comprise our so-called

Auto-immune disease represents a class of disease where the body's immune system has become dysfunctional. The body's immune system attacks itself, causing many illnesses. Some common auto-immune disease disorders include rheumatoid arthritis (not osteoarthritis) and lupus erythematosus. Lupus erythematosus - Model of Auto-immune Disease Lupus erythematosus is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the connective tissue . 90 percent of those afflicted are women, and mostly occur in young adults. It is an autoimmune disease.
The prognosis for people with Lupus depends on the severity of the condition and whether any dangerous complications develop. Mild cases of lupus respond very well to natural medicine. Those with more serious illness can expect to achieve some relief of symptoms with natural approaches.
Dietary Guideline:
Follow a well-balanced high fiber diet, with plenty of green leafy vegetables. Maximize intake of raw and steamed vegetables, including broccoli, kale, beet and collard green.
Avoid any allergies or sensitivity to food that may be triggering flare-ups. Many have found the avoidance of wheat, chocolate and milk to be helpful.
