PEMPHIGUS VULGARIS : A Diagnostic Chameleon ?
by TJ Moriarty
OLNews@aol.com Return to the OnLine News Index If you haven't heard of it before, don't feel bad most people haven't. But if you or someone you love has it, the symptoms are unforgettable. "It" is Pemphigus Vulgaris. Its abrasive name draws a fitting mental picture of what it does to its victims . Pemphigus, or commonly referred to as "PV", is an auto-immune blistering disorder of the skin and mucous membranes where those afflicted suffer from burn-like lesions all over their bodies. The sores may never heal in some cases or may not heal for extended periods of time. Some patients can coexist with the disease for years, while others will die a slow and complicated death. Janet Lehne has it. "Sometimes I feel like I'm a walking open sore, and believe it or not, I actually have a mild case." When she first realized something was wrong in 1983, she thought she was dying from AIDS. The common lesions now known to be associated with AIDS and HIV are very similar to a PV outbreak. "My doctors, in the early eighties, were convinced that I was symptomatic and suffering from an aggressive case of AIDS. It scared the hell out of me. I thought I was a dead person." But then she was told she had one of those unusually rare skin conditions that no one really knew much about. "What is PV?" would be one of the obscure, extra-credit questions for medical students of dermatology. She says her scalp literally tears. Her gums bleed and blister before disintegrating. Janet says PV is usually recognized by its slow-progression of infections in the mouth.

HD is an auto immune disorder with neurological consequences.
This is my attempt to explain the many diverse facts about HD. This comes from an engineer not from a biologist. Some ideas presented here are not main stream biology. I thank the biologists and medical professionals that have given me their time to my dogged arguments. If there is objection or comment to these ideas, I will publish them here. The following will most likely change from time to time. Jerry 02Feb01; updated 23-Sep-01
Huntington's disease (HD) is dominant disorder caused by an expansion of the poly Q tract of the huntingtin gene. The gene is widely expressed but only a narrow sub-set of cells are affected. Just how the HD gene causes HD is unknown. Insight may be gained by comparing HD to better understood diseases that have related effects.
Comparing Cancer and HD
The diagram shows aspects of two diseases. A form of cancer is described in red. Huntington's disease with diabetes is described in blue. Starting at he left, the red lines show that cancer genes cause this cancer. The cancer activates the immune system which in turn kills cancer cells. Brain cells are also killed. The blue lines show that the huntingtin gene also activates the immune system. In this diagram the neurological defects of Huntington's disease are caused by an activated immune system. The effects of the activated immune system on incidental cancer is also shown as is the tendency for carriers of mutant huntingtin to develop diabetes. The diagram also depicts the early Alzheimer's pathology prevalent in HD patients.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANTI-FERTILITY VACCINES
CHALLENGING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
===== Over recent decades, researchers have been exploiting new contraceptive methods to use in family planning programmes in the South. Within the scope of medical application of modern biotechnologies, the development of anti-fertility vaccines is a new approach. However, these new vaccines do not really benefit the user, says Ute Sprenger. =====
Proponents of anti-fertility vaccines claim that they offer a wider choice of family planning methods. However, from a user s perspective two questions need to be answered: (1) does this new technology empower women to gain more autonomy over their fertility?; and (2) does it improve their health?
STRATEGY
Over the last two decades world wide research on fertility regulating vaccines has been conducted under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO). Some prototype vaccines have undergone or are currently undergoing clinical trials in several countries. The entirely new immunological approach is based on the idea that a long-term contraceptive method, intended for use in family planning programmes in countries with low levels of medical care, should require little motivation of the user, should be cheap, and should be simple to apply by the provider.
The approach is an integral part of the strategy of demographic control, which has provided a series of long-lasting, provider- dependent birth control methods since the 1960s. At a 1989 WHO symposium on the safety and efficacy of anti- fertility vaccines the chairman summarized the debate: "Foremost in my mind during these discussions was our difficulty in assessing the urgency of the demographic crisis. To the extent that the impact of that crisis increases, the need for more effective family planning technologies must increase. At the very least, failure to develop something that may provide a more effective technology would be to take a grave and unnecessary risk."

OUR RESEARCH Recognition by the host's immune system of the carbohydrate portion of the glycoproteins of these pathogenic microorganisms is essential for an immune response to be generated by the host. Moreover, an understanding of the factors that enable antibodies to distinguish among glycoproteins is essential to the rational development of vaccines. Elucidating the conformational properties of glycoproteins and their carbohydrate components is key to this understanding. Dr. Woods's investigations seek to define the conformational properties of the free oligosaccharides of such glycoproteins, the effect of attachment of the oligosaccharide to the protein, and the mechanisms of noncovalent oligosaccharide-protein interactions. Traditional experimental techniques that have been successfully applied to proteins have not been able to determine conclusively the conformational properties of glycoproteins. The conformation of an oligosaccharide in aqueous solution is determined by interactions (both steric and electronic and between both attached and nonbonded atoms) between the sugar residues and between these residues and solvent molecules. All these interatomic interactions must be adequately described in order to arrive at an accurate prediction of an oligosaccharide's conformational preferences. Moreover, the structure may need to be described as an ensemble of conformations rather than as a single conformation, accounting for both spatial and temporal properties of the oligosaccharide. Mathematically, such a description can be obtained by applying a molecular mechanical force field in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, a standard technique in the analysis of protein and oligonucleotide structures.

By Linda Carter Batiste , MS and Beth Loy, Ph.D.
Preface
There are an estimated 1,400,000 to 2,000,000 people with lupus, affecting 1 out of every 185 Americans. Most individuals are diagnosed with lupus between the ages of 20 and 40. Therefore, many individuals with lupus are members of the workforce. These statistics, coupled with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) show why knowing about workplace accommodations for people with lupus is important. When considering accommodations for people with lupus, the accommodation process must be conducted on a case-by-case basis. Symptoms caused by lupus vary from person to person, ranging from mild symptoms that affect only a few organs to life-threatening symptoms that can cause death. When determining effective accommodations, the person's individual abilities and limitations should be considered and problematic job tasks must be identified. Therefore, the person with lupus should be involved in the accommodation process. Not all people with lupus will need accommodations to perform their jobs and many others may need only a few accommodations. For those who need accommodation, the following pages provide basic information about common limitations, symptoms, useful questions to consider, and accommodation possibilities. The following is only a sample of possibilities to consider; numerous other solutions and considerations may exist.

There are several species of echinacea; the most common, and most frequently used in medicinal preparations, is Echinacea purpurea , the purple cone flower. Echinacea purpurea grows sporadically throughout the eastern U.S. It reaches heights of three feet, with a single, stout, bristly stem. The echinacea flower varies in color from light pink to pale purple. It's a popular ornamental in many gardens.
The history of echinacea's medicinal use begins with the Plains Indians of the American Midwest, who used it for a variety of ailments, including venomous bites and external infections. In 1887, echinacea was introduced into U.S. medical practice, and it grew in popularity. Indeed, in the early part of the 20th century, nearly every medicine cabinet in the country contained echinacea. However, with the discovery of penicillin and other "wonder drugs," the popularity of echinacea eventually waned.
The plant was rediscovered in the 1930s by Dr. Gerhard Madaus of Germany, who came to America in search of echinacea seeds. He returned to his homeland and developed a juice from the above-ground portion of

The Research
The Issue: Adult survivors of childhood physical, emotional, or sexual abuse are not only at increased risk for depression and other mental health disorders, but new evidence suggests they are increasingly more likely to suffer from heart disease, obesity, and other potentially fatal physical conditions. Although it appears that trauma survivors frequently smoke, drink, and overeat as a way to cope with their emotional turmoil, other evidence suggests that the trauma itself may have profound effects on the body that leave it increasingly vulnerable to disease. Researchers, for example, have found that childhood abuse survivors show changes in brain structure and in their physiological responses to stress. The Facts:
  • Almost one million American children were victims of abuse or neglect in 1996. Of these, more than half (52 percent) were victims of neglect, 24 percent suffered physical abuse, and 12 percent were sexually abused. A parent was the abuser in 77 percent of cases; in 11 percent the abuser was another relative.[12]
  • A study of nearly 600 women found that those who had been sexually abused as children were significantly more likely than the control group to report eating disorders, depression, phobias and other anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and suicide attempts.[9]

HYPOXIS HEMEROCALLIDEA
(active: hypoxoside) Once in the body, Hypoxoside separates into two molecules of rooperol, which is a powerful antioxidant. While rooperol has been proven to be beneficial to the body in numerous ways, the latest studies show the conversion of this remarkable natural product takes place when a certain enzyme, beta-glucosidase, is present. This particular enzyme is what is naturally released by rapidly dividing cancer cells. Therefore, rooperal has a site specific action at these cancer cells, and has also been found to have tumoricidal activity.(1-3) This naturally healing food product has been found to be beneficial for not only breast and cervical cancers, but BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia).(4) Extensive research has also been conducted regarding the use of Hypoxis for apparent anti HIV (AIDS) actions. In addition, as rooperol helps prevent cellular damage caused by certain degenerative diseases, it has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor effects.(5) These effects have also been confirmed by research in Germany and South Africa. TOXICITY OF HYPOXIS The extract from Hypoxis hemerocallidea (previously known as Hypoxis rooperi) has been clinically evaluated specifically to determine any toxic effects.

Don’t wait until your nose is running and your cough has settled in. Some professionalsbelieve that Echinacea worsens the effects of autoimmune disorders.
http://www.uhs.wisc.edu/ex/selfcare/resource/cold_facts.php
Symptoms of the Common Cold
  • scratchy or sore throat sneezing runny nose tenderness around the eyes stuffy nose watery eyes full feeling in the ears cough: dry or with white or clear mucus general tired feeling fever below 101 degrees mild headache muscle and body aches
Methods of Spreading
The common cold can be caused by any of more than 200 viruses. These viruses attack and multiply in cells that line the nose and throat. Colds are most commonly spread hand to hand. For example, if you shake, touch or hold the hand of an infected person and then touch your eyes or nose, you are likely to infect yourself with the virus. You can also catch a cold if you touch your eyes or nose after touching a hard surfacesuch as a telephone or doorknobshortly after an infected person touched it. Just because you are exposed does not necessarily mean you will become infected. It depends on your immune system and history of previous exposure to the virus. Prevention
  • wash your hands often and avoid touching your face use disposable tissues eat a balanced diet avoid prolonged contact with people who have colds keep your stress level down keep your room humidity at moderate to high
General Treatment Measures
  • rest more and avoid your usual exercise regimen until the cold has resolved drink at least eight ounces of liquids every two hours to help soothe the throat and relieve nasal congestion If a fever is present, more fluids are needed to replenish those lost due to the elevation in body temperature.

I also suffer from "woman's problems" such as uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis and painful menstruation. Western medicine did not offer much help to me in addressing chronic health problems and traditional Chinese medicine lacks an understanding of hormones. I have B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in chemistry and had worked for more than 6 years in the chemistry laboratory of a large hospital in Toronto, Canada. I also have a strong personal interest reinforced by family tradition in Chinese herbal medicine. I decided to treat myself with
