Thoreau (a part of which is given below): '...I should be glad if the meadows on the earth were left in a wild state, if that were the consequence of men's beginning to redeem themselves. ...' Chapter I The first chapter ends with: 'I ask you to first walk through my woods and then sit at this window. As the pages turn the view will change from global change, to a Universe that provides a wondrous stage for life on Earth, to a pre-defined history found in the Scriptures, and finally to a unification of these scenes into one universal perspective.' Files saved to your computer's hard drive may print more easily than a file in your browser window. Chapter II This chapter first provides illustrations of environmental connections as presented by an elder botanist. His lessons teach us relationships in one's own locality extend throughout nature and the world. Yet, life itself depends on a remarkably thin organic layer resting on the rocky surface of our lone planet home. Next, the narrator examines change as we walk through the local woodland. There is little purpose in discussing

Environment
Our Nation's environment the air, water, soil, and plant and animal life is constantly changing as natural processes and human actions affect it. USGS activities in the environment theme area include studies of natural physical, chemical, and biological processes, and of the results of human actions; the goal is to provide the understanding and scientific information needed to recognize and mitigate adverse impacts and to sustain the environment. Activities include data collection, long-term assessments, ecosystem analysis, predictive modeling, and process research on the occurrence, distribution, transport, and fate of contaminants as well as the impacts of contaminants on biota. Drought in the Horn of Africa FEATURE Full coverage from IIP The 3rd World Water Forum March 16-23, 2003 Kyoto, Shiga and Osaka, Japan For the fourth year in a row, the environmental satellites operated by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have detected crippling drought conditions in parts of Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia that will leave residents in this broad area facing severe water shortages, potential outbreaks of disease and starvation.
"Any hope of success for the early stage of the agricultural season (March - May) for that part of Africa is at risk now," warned Felix Kogan of the NOAA Satellite and Information Services Office of Research and Applications. "This is the time that the local population counts on to get enough food to last until fall, when the next harvest is ready," he added in a February 13 NOAA press release. The Asia Pacific Network for Global Change APN OBJECTIVES
Global change research requires a high level of international cooperation. Inter-governmental networks now support this type of research in three major regions of the world Europe and Africa, North and South America, and the Asia-Pacific. These are the European Network for Research in Global Change (ENRICH), the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) and the APN, respectively.
In particular, the APN has the following objectives:
  • supporting regional cooperation in global change research on issues particularly relevant to the region. standardizing, collecting, analysing, and exchanging scientific data relating to global change research improving of scientific and technical capabilities and research infrastructure of nations in the region cooperating with research networks in other regions providing scientific knowledge to the public, and input to policy decision-making developing appropriate mechanisms for transfer of expertise and technology
ACTIVITIES
The APN conducts the following activities:
  • supporting global observation activities necessary for research holding Inter-Governmental Meetings, Scientific Planning Group meetings, etc.

International Journal of Climatology The International Journal of Climatology is published 12 times a year by the Royal Meteorological Society in conjunction with John Wiley and sons. Its main role is to report and stimulate research in climatology. The journal encompasses global and regional studies of climate, local and microclimatological investigations, changes of climate (past, present and future) and the application of climatological knowledge to a wide range of human activities.

Technology and Development Program

The Center explores global environmental change and offers related educational programs. Although administered by the Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Department, the Center's researchers also come from the departments of Civil and Environment-al Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. In addition, they collaborate with faculty from Political Science, Economics, and Management (see the Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change). The Center studies the processes and mechanisms controlling the global environment. Its research program is focused on five core areas:
  • Convection and cloud formation
  • Oceans and ocean-atmosphere coupling
  • Land-surface hydrology and hydrology- vegetation coupling
  • Biogeochemistry of the greenhouse gases
  • Upper atmospheric chemistry and circulation.

Climate Modeling Initiative A major new program in the Center is the Climate Modeling Initiative, which has two goals: improving prediction; and understanding the limits to predictability of climate. A major component of the initiative is development of a new climate model involving oceanic, atmospheric, and terrestrial components carefully tested using global observations. It involves a novel collaboration between climate and computer scientists and utilizes a powerful new multiprocessor computer at MIT.

Antarctic environment provides clues to global change
By Nancy Ross-Flanigan
News and Information Services Sediment samples from the oceans surrounding Antarctica give scientists an idea of what the climate may have been more than 45 million years ago. At right, wind convergence patterns around Antarctica help determine where different types of sediment will end up on the ocean floor. Fine, medium and large grains are deposited in different areas. Photo and graphic courtesy of the Department of Geological Sciences How have past environmental changes affected Antarctica? The elusive answer is of more than academic interest. Located at the point where the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans converge and mix, the icy continent not only is profoundly affected by global climate, it also exerts effects that can be felt worldwide. In warmer, wetter times, soil and rock erode into rivers, which carry sediment into the sea. If ice sheets are present and mobile, the masses of moving ice drag sediment along, and the meltwaters from receding ice sheets help transport sediment from the continent to the sea. These processes result in a higher mass accumulation rate (a measure of the amount of sediment deposited in a given time) than when the ice is very cold and stable, Joseph explains. Grain size hints at where sedimentary material came from and how it was deposited. Very fine dust grains were most likely swept off from dry, desert-like areas by the wind and slowly settled at random on the sea floor, uninfluenced by ocean currents. Medium-sized grains represent mud that flowed out in plumes from rivers or mud that was piled into drifts by currents that flow along the bottom of the ocean floor. Large grains probably were deposited by very fast currents, possibly those that quickly bring material down to the ocean bottom from the continental shelf.
