The Fate of the Rainforests Developed by Debbie Bullock Janice Griffin and Pamela King Picture yourself Overview Introduction Quest(ions) Process ... Conclusion Overview
This lesson is about the challenges for the survival of the rainforests. This unit is designed for upper elementary and is appropriate for use by science, social studies and math teachers. In addition to web sites included in this unit, a bibliography is located at the end of this project listing print, audio, and video resources. Click here for specific strands and objectives from the South Carolina Curriculum Standards that are addressed in this webquest.
Overview Introduction Quest(ions) Process ... Conclusion Introduction Welcome to the world of the tropical rainforest, teeming with rare species of animals and plants that exist nowhere else on earth. Located between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, rainforests are characterized by hot, humid weather all year long, which creates an environment conducive to an abundance of growth. Hundreds of years ago, tropical rainforests encircled the globe, much like long green arms, hugging the equator and covering 20% of the earth's land surface. Reduced to a mere 6%, the diminishing rainforest shelters more than half of all the plant and animal species living in the world today. Rapid deforestation has endangered the splendor of this tropical paradise.

This page is designed to carry information about Australian Tropical Rain Forests. In particular, it will carry information on the various projects on plant taxonomy and biogeography being undertaken at La Trobe University and the Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research , many of which are included within the Cooperative Research Centre for Tropical Rainforest Ecology and Management (CRC-TREM) . These projects include the development of interactive keys to Australian tropical rain forest plants, the study of plant biogeography in Australian tropical rain forests, and the development of leaf x-ray images for Australian tropical rain forest plants.

OVERALL OBJECTIVES Students will understand that: a) Knowledge Objectives (MU = Main understanding)
  • Climate has a dramatic effect on people's lives. Tropical rainforests are biologically diverse. Economic progress may lead to environmental destruction. Vegetation is affected by location. Deforestation impacts globally. Wildlife is diverse in the rainforest from different regions of the world. Changes in one part of the environment results in changes in another part of the environment. Deforestation has parallels in our local environment.
  • b) Skills Objectives (S = skill)
  • The importance of cooperative group work.
  • c) Values Objectives (V = values)
  • To what extent should we exploit our natural resources? Which is the best approach in co-operating with people on a global scale? What is the best way to manage wildlife in the rainforest?
  • Objectives Procedures Introduction
  • Write the word 'rainforest' on the board. Ask students what they know about rainforests?
  • 91. Popinfo.org - Issues Overview
For one thing, forests are habitat. Millions of species live in forests (especiallyrainforests) and when the forests disappear, so do those species.
    http://www.popinfo.org/redbook/chap5-1.htm
All over the world, forests are disappearing. Sometimes they're cut down to plant crops or raise cattle. Sometimes they're cut down for wood or paper. And sometimes they're cut down by poor people who can't afford fuels like propane or kerosene and have to cook and heat their homes with fuel wood. Stabilizing population, lowering consumption and fighting poverty are all part of the solution to disappearing forests.

    • Chemical runoff, sewage, and oil spills have damaged many fresh and salt water ecosystems.
    • The ozone layer has suffered substantial damage. Carbon emissions are causing smog and acid rain, and contribute to global warming.
    • On average, three unique plant and animal species go extinct every hour.
There are two main causes: our rapidly expanding population, and the high-consumption lifestyles some of us choose.
Modern Impacts - The Loss of Forests
    The People Who Ate People
Soon there were too many people, and the forests were cut and animals hunted. After some time of this, animals were totally wiped out. The forests were also destroyed and most vegetation on the island disappeared. At this point, there was only one resource left to use: Humans as food! Many of the people on the island began eating those who had died of starvation.
When European ships landed on Easter Island, they found warring bands of people on a destroyed island.

    Students will understand the following:
Scientists are conducting experiments to verify the powers attached to herbs and other plants by native peoples. A reader must evaluate the accuracy and biases of all so-called scientific studies, especially those reported only on the Web. For this lesson, you will need: Access to the Internet Discuss with students how they would go about using the Internet to find material about new or potential uses of plants as medicines. Where would they begin? By going straight to Web sites hosted by pharmaceutical companies? By doing keyword searches? You may have students proceed to follow their own instincts to locate sites and articles. Or to save time and focus students on the same sources, you may want to refer groups of students to the following three sites screened for this project:

The Great Barrier Reef was formed about 9,000 years ago after the last ice age. The coral can only grow below the water level and therefore as the ice melted, the water level increased and the coral formed the reef. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef system in the world stretching for 1,250 miles and occupying an area of 135,000 sq miles.
There is a diverse aquatic life on the reef with an estimated 2,000 types of fish and 500 species of coral polyps not to mention the bird life as well. The spectacular colours of the fish and coral make The Great Barrier Reef a favorite for divers from all over the world. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) was established 20 years ago to protect over 1000 Coral reefs and Islands that make up the Great Barrier Reef.
    Daintree Rainforest
The Daintree Rainforest is located near Cairns, Queensland. This rainforest is also on the list of protected sites from the World Heritage Listing.
