Students and teachers will find curricular resources (information, content...) to help them learn about this topic. In addition, there are also links to instructional materials (lesson plans) which will help teachers provide instruction in this theme. Please read our
Animal Awareness
A lesson plan designed for intermediate to junior high students. Students research a rainforest animal and present a report to classmates.
Animals of the Tropical Rainforest
In this webquest activity, primary students have the task of finding out more about 5 animals from the rainforest, drawing one of the animals, finding and taping animal sounds, and learning more on what can be done to protect the rainforest.
Biome Investigation
Using picture/graphical resources on the Internet as starting points, intermediate students investigate the six biomes of the world in this lesson plan. Two specific objectives are to describe the major factors that shape biomes and to represent the connections between the factors that determine biome development and plant and animal life.
Chocolate Fun
A lesson plan that has students make hot chocolate with different brands and test the pH levels. Information and links are to resources about the rainforest cacao plant.

    http://www.srl.caltech.edu/personnel/krubal/rainforest/Edit560s6/www/where.html
WHERE ARE THE RAINFORESTS The map below shows the location of the world's tropical rainforests. Rainforests cover only a small part of the earth's surface - about 6%, yet they are home to over half the species of plants and animals in the world. Click on the dark green areas to read about the its unique rainforests. CENTRAL AMERICA This region was once entirely covered with rainforest, but large areas have been cleared for cattle ranching and for sugar cane plantations.
Like other major rainforests, the jungles and mangrove swamps of Central America contain many plants and animals found nowhere else. Central America is famous for its large number of tropical birds, including many kinds of parrots. GO TO TOP THE AMAZON The Amazon jungle is the world's largest tropical rainforest. The forest covers the basin of the Amazon, the world's second longest river.
The Amazon is home to the greatest variety of plants and animals on Earth. A of all the world's plants and birds and about of all mammal species are found there.

In ancient India, over 2,003 years ago, as annual public works projects, kings and emperors planted trees along the roads to provide shade for weary travelers. Today, people all over the world are working hard to keep our planet green. Earth Day (sometimes called Earth Week) is a time put aside each year to remind us all how important it is to accomplish this goal. These sites explain why it's so important to keep our planet green, and what we can do to help. Have fun learning about Earth Day!

    The Forests of St. Kitts
The island of St. Kitts is composed primarily of four volcanoes. The oldest is 30 million years and it makes up, the Southeast Peninsula. Camps crater and Dos D'Ane Pond are in the centre of the island, and the youngest at 600,000 years, is Mount Liamuiga. The native peoples who originally inhabited the island did little to change the forests of St. Kitts. They practiced small-scale slash and burn agriculture and mild selective tree harvesting. When the English and French arrived in the 17th century, St. Kitts was almost completely covered with forests. These were soon cleared to make way for the cultivation of tobacco, indigo, cotton and sugar. The highest elevations were not suitable for agriculture so the colonists exploited these areas for timber. Throughout history the peoples of St. Kitts have depended on wood. From the 1860's to the 1930's an enormous quantity of lumber was used to build houses, boats, buggies, furniture, wheels and fences, In addition, charcoal and wood were the traditional fuel sources of the island. Decomposition rate, rapid, slow. Are all Tropical forests, Rainforests?Only a small percentage of the tropical forests are rainforests.
    http://mbgnet.mobot.org/sets/rforest/types.htm
Types of Rainforests T here are two types of rainforests tropical and temperate . Tropical and temperate rainforests share certain characteristics. For example, most trees flare at the base. Vegetation is dense, tall and very green . Both types of rainforests are rich in plant and animal species, although the diversity is greater in the tropical rainforest. Montane forests are found in mountainous areas and may contain plants such as oaks, rhododendrons, and pines, which are characteristic of temperate deciduous forests. At higher altitudes, temperatures are cooler. Even close to the equator, frost and snow can occur. Precipitation and Climate
Both tropical and temperate rainforests are very lush and wet. The tropical rainforest has downpours at the rate of two inches an hour adding up to some 400 inches of rain per year. It rains a lot in the temperate rainforest, too about 100 inches per year. And even more moisture comes from the coastal fog that hovers among the trees. Tropical rainforests are warm and moist; while temperate rainforests are cool.
Tropical Temperate Temperatures warm cool Number of tree species many (hundreds) few (10-20) Types of leaves broadleaf needles Age of trees 50-100 years 500-1000 years Epiphytes lots of different kinds including orchids and bromeliads mostly mosses and ferns Decomposition rate rapid slow

    Rainforests
Diversity and Destruction By Dave Kristula [ 9 January 1997]
[A section of Dave's Site Abstract
The purpose of this paper is introduce the reader to the truths about the rainforests and its destruction. The rainforests are disappearing acres per minute, a number that grows so quickly it would be impossible to cite here because it would grow outdated within a week. The rainforests are home to over half of the entire species of the world, which are being destroyed with the rainforests.
Unlike the rainforest itself which may appear to grow back, it will never be the rainforest it once was, and all of those species that were killed will never return again. Many of those species that have not yet been discovered may very likely cure cancer, AIDS, and many of the other diseases and viruses of today. If the rainforests disappear, so will most of the population of the world. This report will help the reader to learn more about the causes of the horrifying destruction, and ways that the reader can help stop it!
    Back to the Index
    Introduction
This report is about many aspects of the rainforest: what rainforests are, a brief summary of the importances of the rainforests, a description of the destruction of the rainforest, and an informative section about how an average person can help to save the rainforest.
