Brief Description:
This course addresses ethical questions about nature and the natural environment. Is it wrong to cut down trees? If so, why? What about the treatment of non-human animals? Is it wrong to use them for whatever purposes we wish? Pollution. Pesticides. Global Warming. Population control. These are some of the issues that we will address. The approach will be philosophical. As a class we will be looking for answers to these normative ethical issues. The course is co-taught by a professor in philosophy and one in the department of Crops, Soils, and Environmental Science.

416 pp 7x10 2 figures During the past twenty-five years, North American forestry has received increasingly vigorous scrutiny. Critics including the environmentalists, environmental scientists, representatives of public interest groups, and many individual citizens have expressed concerns about forestry's basic assumptions and methods, as well as its practical outcomes. Criticism has centered on such issues as the exploitation of forests for timber production, the reduction and fragmentation of old-growth habitats, the destruction of biodiversity, the degradation of grasslands through grazing practices, lack of government attention to recreation facilities, silvicultural methods like clearcutting and the use of herbicides and pesticides, the exportation of industrial forestry techniques to other parts of the world, and the use of public monies to provide services for private resouce companies, as in the creation of logging roads. This rising tide of public scrutiny has led many foresters to suspect that their "contract" with society to manage forests using their best professional judgment had been undermined. Some of these professionals, as well as some of their critics, have begun to reexamine their old beliefs and to look for new ways of practicing forestry. Part of this reflective process has entailed new directions in environmental ethics and environmental philosophy.

Fundamental Concerns
Ethics is the branch of philosophy that studies and evaluates human conduct in the light of moral principles, the latter conceived to be either innate matters of conscience or powers of discrimination acquired through experience. However derived, moral principles are normative, they concern what is right or wrong, good or bad. In general they guide conduct away from egoism toward altruism, from selfishness toward unselfishness, from insensitivity toward sympathy. Melden 1 observes that acting out of self-interest is not a moral reason, while Warnock 2 claims that the proper general object of morality is to expand our sympathies, so as to reduce the damage inherent in narrowness of knowledge and of limited interests. Much earlier, David Hume 4 supported the idea that altruism is a normal human attribute. He argued that feelings of esteem, respect, regard, kinship, affection and sympathy are as natural to us as self-love. Their expression and scope, he suggested, depend on how reason and understanding inform them. Although he had society in mind as the beneficiary of its citizens' altruistic sentiments, I see no reason why benevolence should stop there.

Modern Pantheism as an Approach to Environmental Ethics
by Harold W. Wood, Jr.*
ABSTRACT:
While philosophers debate the precise articulation of philosophical theory to achieve a desirable change in environmental attitudes, they may be neglecting the fountainhead of social change. Insofar as ordinary people am concerned, it is religion which is the greatest factor in determining morality. In order to achieve an enlightened environmental ethics, we need what can only be termed a "religious experience. " While not denying the efficacy of other religious persuasions, I explore the contribution of an informed modern Pantheism to environmental ethics. The conceptual division of the holy and the world is rectified by pantheism. As a form of "nature mysticism." pantheism promotes a theological basis for achieving oneness with God through knowledge, devotion. and works, all of which establish an enlightened theory for environmental ethics. A modern pantheism bears investigation by those advocating new ethical approaches toward the environment.
"This doctrine of pantheism is more than a mere theory. It has tremendous practical and ethical implications." - Henry Thomas and Dane Lee Thomas

Environmental Ethics, Ecological Theology and Natural Selection Suffering and Responsibility
Lisa Sideris Nature, this book reminds us, is a rough and predatory place. Recent efforts by both religious and secular thinkers to develop an environmental ethic that is consistent with our understanding of the natural sciences and free of anthropocentrism have foundered on the rocks of a Romantic, pre-Darwinian idea of nature as intrinsically harmonious and interdependent. Such an idea has lead to two abusive extremes, one, of malign neglect, and the other, of the misguided manipulation of nature in an effort to make it more humane. Lisa Sideris proposes a new way of thinking about the natural world, an environmental ethic that incorporates the ideas of natural selection and values the processes rather than the products of nature. Such an approach encourages us to take a minimally interventionist approach to nature. Only when the competitive realities of evolution are faced squarely, Sideris argues, can we generate practical environmental principles to deal with such issues as species extinction and the relationship between suffering and sentience. by Daniel A. Kealey, Ph.D. Published by State University of New York Press, Albany, 1990. Ordering information is at the end of this page. Do you believe in the evolution of consciousness? If so, then you will enjoy this book which sees that our environmental crisis is an externalization of the crisis in the evolution of our consciousness. Unless we facilitate the growth of our consciousness beyond its present fixation in techno-rationality we will never resolve the ecocidal trajectory of our contemporary relationship with nature. If there is, in fact, an evolution of consciousness, and this evolution develops in stages, then we cannot expect to establish an optimum relationship to nature by relying on immature stages of perceiving nature, stages that have passed from their fructive, efficient engagement with nature into the senescent cycle inwhich, addicted to means that once worked but are no longer attuned to the reality of nature, we futily and desparately try to bend nature to our outworn assumptions. Many philosophers such as Ken Wilber, Sri Aurobindo, Teilhard de Chardin, Jean Gebser and many others have observed that there is an evolution of consciousness going on and that, moreover, it is speeding up. In this book I work primarily with the theory of the evolution of human consciousness developed by Jean Gebser whose main work is

The unit also aims to provide experience in interdisciplinary tutorial work.
