John Locke (1632-1704) wrote his Second Treatise of Government (1698), to justify resistance to Charles II over the right of succession to the throne. It became dogma for the Whig Revolution of 1688 in which James II was dethroned and replaced by William and Mary. A century later, this doctrine backed by all Locke's prestige was neatly and quite properly turned against the British state by the American colonists. The tyrannical monarchy of King George was deposed and replaced with the democratic American Constitution and its corresponding Bill of Rights.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course explores how on earth we should live. After a brief review of utilitarian, natural law and rights theories, the course examines several of the major frameworks for ethical perspectives on environmental issues: so-called "deep ecology", ecofeminism, cost-benefit analysis, etc. In the remainder of the course we take up a number of controversies that enliven the current debates on environmental ethics: do animals have rights?, do corporations have moral responsibilities?, can either markets or "nature" be relied upon to be self-regulating in ways that will solve ethical dilemmas?, do Malthusian population predictions force any moral conclusions on environmental decision-making?
The following is a schema for the structure of the course:
Weeks 1-3: Theoretical frameworks Rights theories
Natural rights Contractual rights Utilitarian theories Rule utilitarianism Act utilitarianism Social Darwinism, Kant and Marx

Our Mission: The GeoEnvironmental Science and Engineering Department embraces the uniquely interdisciplinary framework of its programs and the importance of environmental ethics and value in our modern society. The interdisciplinary program framework provides students with a broad but interconnective understanding of the principles, values, and concepts of environmental science and environmental engineering. The department fosters this understanding by emphasizing methods of analysis and experimentation of very complex, dynamic, and interactive systems. The faculty plays an important role in the environmental concerns of the nation by providing their expertise in addressing scientific and regulatory issues. The site considers environmental ethics that govern human relationships with thenatural world. More environmental ethics Websites . Environmental Backlash.
http://daphne.palomar.edu/calenvironment/ethics.htm
Does the Earth exist for the benefit of humanity? Do humans have any ethical obligations with respect to the natural world? Have we the right to take all the Earth's resources for our own use? Do we have a responsibility to be good stewards over the Earth? Do other species have an intrinsic right to exist? Do trees have legal standing? What do various religions have to say about humanity's relationship to the rest of the living world? These and similar questions are addressed in the study of environmental ethics. Also referenced here is a page on environmental backlash, with information on various movements that take the viewpoint that environmentalists are too extreme, and the Earth is meant to be used by humans. The material in this section has general application, not restricted to the California environment as the rest of this site is.
  • The Tragedy of the Commons. This is the full text of the famous article by Garrett Hardin, on the dilemmas involved in the use of common resources. The land ethic : one approach to the question of our relationship with the natural world was put forth by Aldo Leopold , a forester, wildlife manager, professor, conservationist, and author, who said that we as a society accept that we have ethical obligations to other individuals, and to society as a whole, and that the next stage for society was to develop a land ethic, which would affirm our ethical obligation to the land. He said that we need to enlarge "the boundaries of the community to include the soils, waters, plants, and animals, or collectively, the land...A land ethic changes the role of Homo sapiens from conqueror of the land-community to plain member and citizen of it. It implies respect for his fellow members, and also respect for the community as such" (From

COMMON DECLARATION ON ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS COMMON DECLARATION OF JOHN PAUL II
AND THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH
HIS HOLINESS BARTHOLOMEW I
Monday, 10 June 2002 We are gathered here today in the spirit of peace for the good of all human beings and for the care of creation. At this moment in history, at the beginning of the third millennium, we are saddened to see the daily suffering of a great number of people from violence, starvation, poverty and disease. We are also concerned about the negative consequences for humanity and for all creation resulting from the degradation of some basic natural resources such as water, air and land, brought about by an economic and technological progress which does not recognize and take into account its limits. Almighty God envisioned a world of beauty and harmony, and He created it, making every part an expression of His freedom, wisdom and love (cf. Gen At the centre of the whole of creation, He placed us, human beings, with our inalienable human dignity. Although we share many features with the rest of the living beings, Almighty God went further with us and gave us an immortal soul, the source of self-awareness and freedom, endowments that make us in His image and likeness (cf. Gen 1:26-31;2:7). Marked with that resemblance, we have been placed by God in the world in order to cooperate with Him in realizing more and more fully the divine purpose for creation.

ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS: AN INTRODUCTION
By Ernest Partridge
University of California, Riverside
www.igc.org/gadfly
This is the current version of an unpublished introduction
to the Gadfly's ever-evolving environmental ethics course.
You have had enough! Letters to Congress won't work. Despite your letters, and thousands more, it appears that they will nonetheless issue permits for still more oil platforms off the California coast. So you and your friends have organized a demonstration in Washington in front of the Rayburn House Office building, while inside a final Congressional review of the issue is being conducted by the House Interior Committee. At that moment, testimony is being offered in support of the platforms by lobbyists for the oil companies. Suddenly, a Sergeant-at Arms from the committee room walks out the front door and beckons to you. He tells you that the Committee Chairman has asked him to select a random demonstrator and to invite him inside so that the Committee might hear the protesters' point of view. By sheer chance you have been selected. Shortly thereafter you are seated in the committee room. The Chairman asks: "Why shouldn't we continue to extract oil from offshore California? You reply that to do so would be morally atrocious. You are then asked: "Very well, in what sense do you believe it morally atrocious?" And, "Will you please defend your position that is, will you give the Committee reasons why it should agree with you?"
