Australian Biodiversity
Biodiversity is the variety of all life forms: the different plants, animals and micro-organisms, their genes and the ecosystems of which they are a part. Australia is one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world, with a large portion of its species found nowhere else in the world. We depend on biodiversity for our survival and quality of life. The most significant impediment to the conservation and management of biodiversity is our lack of knowledge about it and the effects of human population and activities on it.
  • Ecosystem processes: biodiversity underpins the processes that make life possible. Healthy ecosystems are necessary for maintaining and regulating: atmospheric quality, climate, fresh water, marine productivity, soil formation, cycling of nutrients and waste disposal.

IMA's Coral Reef Re-habilitation Program is developing model and methodology for rehab- ilitating coral reefs damaged by human and natural impact.
The CDT procedure uses the Ion Selective Electrode (ISE) with cyanide-specific probes to detect the presence of cyanide ions in an absorber solution and is capable of detecting very low levels in fish tissues and organs.

Contributions to IMA will immediately be available to help us preserve and protect marine ecosystems thorough our various programs including IMA's effort to stop cyanide fishing. The world’s coastal ecosystems are healthy and productive, sustaining a biologically diverse marine environment and in return being sustained by a new generation of informed, empowered, and prosperous resource users who live and work in harmony with their natural surroundings.

This Domain links the academic study of biological diversity with the applied field of conservation biology. The study of biological diversity, or "biodiversity," lies at the intersection of evolution with ecology and genetics, combining the subdisciplines of evolutionary ecology, evolutionary genetics and ecological genetics. It has two main branches, the creation of diversity and the maintenance of diversity. Both processes are governed by a general mechanism of selection acting over different scales of space and time. This gives rise to a distinctive set of principles and generalizations that regulate rates of diversification and levels of diversity, as well as the abundance or rarity of different species.

The State of Philippine Biodiversity
According to the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the present knowledge of biodiversity in the Philippines is relatively inadequate and acquired mostly from studies done by foreign biologists during the early 1900s. Recently, more Filipino biologists and naturalists became more involved in taxonomic and biodiversity studies resulting to the identification of a number of species of plants and animals. The table below summarizes the level of biodiversity of Philippine flora and fauna based on the number of species per taxonomic group which have been documented by various scientists. Most key responsibilities are vested in departments, agencies and regional boards, so as a result most of the relevant public bodies in Northern Ireland are closely associated with central government. The Department of the Environment (DOE) and its agencies has the primary responsibility for biodiversity issues and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) and its agencies would also have key responsibilities. The Department for Employment and Learning , the Department of Regional Development (DRD) , the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI)

Biodiversity includes the whole variety of life on Earth, from coral reefs to the arctic. The living world is made up of many thousands of different animals and plants. Biodiversity is represented by all the plant and animal species that we see but it also includes the genetic variation and the complex ecosystems of which they are part. Every living creature has its own genetic 'fingerprint'. The greater the variety of plants and animals, the greater the genetic diversity. Even tiny or insignificant plants may have a vital place in a food chain and the whole network of living things. Everything is precious, if you destroy one small part, you may lose much more. Biodiversity is not restricted to rare or threatened species like the wood bitter-vetch, but also to more common species like the Stoat.

Threatened Species and Threatened Ecological Communities
Australia is home to more than one million species, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. About 85 per cent of flowering plants, 84 per cent of mammals, more than 45 per cent of birds, and 89 per cent of inshore, temperate-zone fish are endemic - that is they are only found in Australia. Changes to the landscape and native habitat as a result of human activity has put many of these unique species at risk. Over the last two hundred years many species of plants and animals have become extinct. For the other species of plants and animals whose survival is threatened a range of management and conservation measures are in place. The Commonwealth is working in partnership with state, territory and local governments, non-government organisations, tertiary institutions and community groups to ensure the protection of our native species. The Commonwealth mechanism for national environment protection and biodiversity conservation is the Environment Protection and Biodiveristy Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). The EPBC Act provides for:
