The International Agriculture/Environment Certificate Program has been designed as a supplement to the various academic majors at Rutgers, especially those at Cook College pertaining to agriculture, food, and the environment. Courses selected from several curricula provide a better understanding of the relationship between these areas and social, cultural, historical, political, and economic factors as they relate to human issues. In short, the academic major provides the knowledge and skill base and the certificate program helps to establish a global perspective. This option should be particularly useful to students in applied science fields who wish to pursue careers in the international arena. In consultation with their academic advisers and the international environmental studies curriculum coordinator, interested students should select a sequence of courses, one from each of three subject areas (I,II,III), that relate to a particular topic such as agriculture, health, food, or environment management. The program also requires foreign language training (IV) and practical experience (V). In addition, Cook College courses that offer an international focus are listed following the certificate program. Students are encouraged to consider these as they select courses to fulfill major and elective requirements. The International Agriculture/Environment Certificate Program is designed to serve Cook College and other Rutgers students who wish to supplement their majors by expanding their understanding of issues and challenges faced in the international arena. The certificate program is administered through the international environmental studies curriculum. Interested students should consult with their advisers and Dr. George E.B. OTC 04.09.98 02:13 WASHINGTON, (Sep. 3) IPS - A just published scientific study bolsters worldwide fears that biologically engineered organisms will have an adverse affect on other species and the environment. The report, released yesterday in the scientific journal Nature, says species of genetically altered plants examined in field tests showed a dramatically increased ability to reproduce sexually and spread their modified genes to non-modified plants. This new finding strengthens the fears of many small farmers, scientists and environmentalists worldwide who claimed that the modified or added genes of biologically engineered organisms might "escape" into other related crops or weeds through sexual reproduction or cross-pollination. "This is a big deal," says Jane Rissler, a senior scientist with the Union of Concerned Scientists, a Washington-based advocacy group. "This study confirms one of the largest fears of what genetically modified plants can do. The flow of genes from biologically engineered species to wild species could change the genetic diversity and processes of whole ecosystems." Chemical and agribusiness corporations have developed a new generation of transgenic or biologically engineered crops that contain genetic traits from other plants, viruses, bacteria, and animals. These new plants are designed to perform in ways that could never have been achieved by scientists working with classical breeding techniques.

With a shortage of water throughout the world, proper methods of treating and recycling water is the key goal in sustaining our limited water resource supply. Geographically speaking, the wastewater pollution within China has affected the environment, society, and agriculture. The water pollution crisis in China has brought up an issue of efficient wastewater treatment methods to help alleviate their problems. Throughout this paper, we will discuss the topics on the effects of wastewater pollution towards the environment and the society (health factors, agriculture, economic impacts, etc). At the same time, proposals for wastewater treatment procedures and facilities to help the water crisis in China will be discussed. INTRODUCTION The lack of clean water has always been an issue of environmental concern all over the world. This environmental issue is mainly stressed in developing countries today. The main sources of water pollution are: industrial (chemical, organic, and thermal wastes), municipal (largely sewage consisting of human wastes, other organic wastes, and detergents), and agricultural (animal wastes, pesticides, and fertilizers) (Brower et.al, 1990). For the past several years, China has been affected with the water pollution crisis. Three examples of wastewater pollution crisis in China are the City of Tianjin, the Chao Lakes and Xian City.
