Soil and Environment Activities
The following activities are designed for you to study how sol and the environment affects agriculture. Try some or try all of the tasks. Some of these ideas are taken from the Agriculture Saskatchewan series by Saskatchewan Education.
Activity 1: Soil Texture Recognizing soil texture and its related characteristics is very important in production decisions made by producers every year. Obtain dry samples of sand, silt and clay. Record your findings in a journal writing format.
Using the samples of sand, silt and clay, rub a pinch of each between the thumb and forefinger? Which is the smoothest? the coarsest?
Place a pinch of one of the samples in the palm of one hand and add two drops of water from an eyedropper. Use the forefinger of the other hand to mix the water with the soil. Describe how the sample feels when wet. Repeat with the other two samples.
Place no more than three to five grains of salt in the palm of one hand. Using an eyedropper, add five drops of liquid laundry starch. Use the forefinger of the other hand to mix the salt and liquid starch. Add three drops of white glue and mix. Compare this mixture to the mixtures produced in part B. Add two more grains of salt and mix. Describe the effect of adding more salt.

Global Agriculture, Environment, and Hunger
Past, Present, and Future Links
Robert S. Chen Assistant Professor (Research) Alan Shawn Feinstein World Hunger Program Brown University December 1990 Recent attention to the threat of global environmental change has tended to focus on the possible impacts of a changing environment on agriculture and the implications for global and regional food security. From a policy viewpoint, however, it is also critical to understand the degree to which agriculturally related activities may contribute to global-scale environmental change and the extent to which policies to prevent, mitigate, or adapt to environmental change may themselves affect agriculture and hunger. These two issues are likely to become especially important in making decisions not only about how to reduce the magnitude of human perturbations to the environment but also about how to improve both food security and environmental quality in the more crowded world of the future. To help put this broad topic into a long-term context, this paper highlights the close linkages between agriculture, environment, and hunger in the past, reviews some of the ways in which the global food system interacts with the global environment in the present, and raises some key questions regarding agriculture, environment, and hunger in the future. The pritnary focus of the paper is on global-scale changes in the environment, including possible changes in the earth's climate induced by increasing atmospheric concentrations of radiatively active trace gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2). methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) and depletion of the stratospheric ozone (O3) layer caused by releases of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other ozone-depleting substances. Interactions between agriculture and local- or regional-scale changes in the environrnent-which may also have important implications for human health and welfare-are not considered in detail.

According to the USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program, sustainable agriculture seeks to develop integrated farm and ranch systems that will, over the long term:
  • Satisfy human food and fiber needs Sustain the economic viability of farm and ranch operations and their communities Enhance environmental quality and the natural resource base upon which the agriculture economy depends Make the most efficient use of nonrenewable resources and on-farm resources and integrate, where appropriate, natural biological cycles and controls Enhance the quality of life for farmers and society as a whole.
The principles of sustainabilty provide a context within which to examine decision-making concerning farming and ranching practices. Sustainability implies a longer time frame when thinking about and evaluating the impacts of agricultural practices. Sustainable farming and ranching are dynamic, evolving systems. Decision-making is site-specific, information-intensive, and usually involves trade-offs among multiple goals.
