Welcome to Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health's Global Environmental Change and Our Health website!
In partnership with the Journey To Planet Earth series, this site will explore the causes, effects, and health implications of global environmental change by drawing on the latest scientific findings and ideas. The aim of this site is to provide middle-school students and educators with original, student-friendly content and health-focused lesson plans to help them understand the effects of global climate and environmental change on our health.
Begin your learning adventure through Taking Our Temperature , which focuses on global warming, and Hole in the Zone , explores the thinning of Earth's protective ozone layer and its effect on the atmosphere. The full website is due to launch in Summer 2003.

...FROM THE PAST ...TO THE PRESENT ...INTO THE FUTURE funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation and the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation ; sponsored by the University of Texas at Dallas - Science Education Department with support from Duncanville Independent School District. As environmentalists continue to call attention to the current trend in global climactic change and other environmental concerns, there has developed an ever-increasing demand for Environmental Education. This unique summer institute encompasses two distinct field research locales - the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and Big Bend National Park in West Texas - and investigates global environmental change from both modern and prehistoric perspectives. International Human Dimensions Workshop
8-21 August, 1998 in Bonn, Germany IHDP (International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change), and START (Global Change SysTEM for Analysis, Research and Training) would like to announce the first annual International Human Dimensions Workshop to be held from 8-21 August, 1998, in Bonn, Germany. This workshop will bring together 20-25 young scientists from developing countries who are already working, or planning to work on human dimensions of global environmental change . Throughout the two weeks, participants will be able to explore and share new research initiatives, ideas and results on issues relating to the human dimensions of global environmental change. Participation in the workshop (travel, conference fees, accomodations and meals) will be fully subsidised by IHDP and START with the support of several donnors.
Selection Criteria
Applicants must:
  • currently be or have specific interest in working in the field of human dimensions of global environmental change be 40 years of age or younger have full working knowledge of the English language have completed their university education (with at least a PhD degree or equivalent) beafore 1993 have been working in their field for a minimum of 3 years be working in the area of human dimensions of global environmental change (priority will be given to social scientists)
Priority will be given to a broad geographical representation from all regions of the developing world. We also encourage applications from women, as a firm goal for the workshop to enhance the participation of women in this field.

Report of the Initial Planning Meeting
-MAY 29-30, 2000, TOKYO, JAPAN-
Institutional Dimensions of Global Environmental Change (IDGEC) is one of the Science Projects of the International Human Dimensions Programme on Glob al Environmental Change (IHDP). The core of the IDGEC project is the analysi s of the roles of social institutions which play as determinants of the cour se of human/environment interactions.
The initial planning meeting of the IDGEC's Carbon Management Research Act ivity (CMRA) was held on May 29-30 in Tokyo, Japan. CMRA is a long-term inv estigation into the range of institutional issues associated with the emergi ng climate regime. Over thirty researchers from twelve countries and a range of disciplines attended this meeting in order to move the research activity from its initial scoping phase into the research phase. The report of the m eeting is compiled in this volume.
Whole report is available at IDGEC web site;

I H D P
the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change Human Dimensions of global environmental change comprise the causes and consequences of people's individual and collective actions , including the changes which lead to modifications of the earth's physical and biological systems and affect the human quality of life and sustainable development in different parts of the world. IHDP is an international, non-governmental, interdisciplinary science programme dedicated to promoting and co-ordinating research aimed at describing, analysing and understanding the human dimensions of global environmental change. IHDP is guided by an international Scientific Committee, comprised of scientists from different geographic and disciplinary backgrounds. Four Science Projects currently receive the full support of the IHDP:
  • Land-Use and Land-Cover Change (LUCC, co-sponsored by IGBP
  • Global Environmental Change and Human Security (GECHS)
  • Institutional Dimensions of Global Environmental Change (IDGEC)
  • Industrial Transformation (IT)

They are a key mechanism used to identify and generate new IHDP research activities in priority areas, promote international collaboration, and link policy-makers and researchers.
