MAINE DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION Maine Geological Survey Aquifer Fact Sheet GROUND WATER Subsurface water that fills the spaces between particles of rock and soil is called ground water. Approximately 90% of the rural population in Maine obtains their water from wells, and ground water is also a significant source for municipal and industrial water supplies. TYPES OF AQUIFERS An aquifer is a subsurface water supply which yields useful quantities of ground water to wells and springs. There are two types of aquifers in Maine: surficial materials and fractured bedrock. In unconsolidated surficial deposits the water fills the pore spaces between the rock fragments that make up the deposits. Coarse-grained surficial materials such as sand and gravel are capable of transmitting large quantities of ground water and are generally the most productive ground water resources in the State. Maine's bedrock has been metamorphosed and recrystallized, and the original porosity between mineral grains has been eliminated. In a bedrock aquifer, ground water is stored in fractures in the rock, and areas with a large number of fractures may contain significant amounts of water. Where coarse-grained surficial deposits are thin or absent, wells drilled into bedrock aquifers provide the only alternative for most domestic water supplies. USES OF AQUIFER INFORMATION When deciding where to locate a domestic or municipal well, aquifer information is very important. Information such as high yield zones and the location of sand and gravel aquifers can influence where a well driller locates a well, and what type of well he constructs. A knowledge of aquifers and their recharge areas is also critical when siting possible sources of pollution such as landfills, salt piles, and hazardous wastes. Aquifer maps and texts from the Maine Geological Survey contain information on aquifer favorability and vulnerability and are widely used by local and state officials in making environmentally sound siting decisions, and by well drillers, developers, and geological consultants as a base for detailed hydrogeological studies.

To fully understand the physical geography of St. Helena, a knowledge of the island's geological structure, lithology and history is essential. This page augments a concise description of these elements with a consideration of St. Helena in the wider context of ocean-floor spreading and plate tectonics. A description of the island's physiography and comments on the economic geology are also included. Physiography St. Helena is the deeply eroded summit of a composite volcano rising from the sea floor at a depth of 4,224m. The sub-aerial portion is approximately 122 sq. km. (47 sq. miles) in area - about half the size of the Isle of Wight. The highest point, Diana's Peak , is 823m above sea level. The small size of the visible island belies the true dimensions of this massive volcano; it is a major feature on the earth's surface. The base of the volcanic pile measures some 130km in diameter and the volume of the cone is estimated to be twenty times that of Mt. Etna - the largest European volcano. St. Helena is truly remote and, together with Ascension Island (1,127km distant), comprises the only land in 3 per cent of the earth's surface area.
