Speech Technology
Despite many important advances in speech recognition the technology is still brittle, preventing its proliferation in the HCI community. Therefore, it is unlikely to have a system that will accurately respond to key words on a one-by-one basis. To circumvent this problem, we look at the frequencies of the past few words (i.e. 200 words) to determine the topic. Therefore, despite a poor accuracy on the speech recognizer (i.e. about recognition rate), the aggregate performance over a set of 200 words for topic-spotting (as opposed to word-spotting) could be well above . The topic-spotting, in turn, tells the system what feedback to generate. In addition, the system is used in a meeting scenario where people are actively generating many words. This is a far better situation for a recognizer than when the computer is interacting with a single user and has to recognize a sentence at a time in a turn-taking situation. Such query-response systems are far too brittle except in constrained applications. We now discuss the details of the topic detection system.

Building on Expertise in Speech Technology and Unified Messaging, Unisys Launches Highly Scalable and Global Voice Portal Solutions
Technology lets telecommunications companies grow revenue today without waiting for new handsets and networks
SUPERCOMM 2002, Booth #11351, Atlanta, Ga., June 3, 2002  – Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) unveiled Unisys Voice Portal Solutions today at SUPERCOMM 2002. The solutions answer a growing demand for technology that leverages both current and future mobile networks, as well as the most intuitive interface in the world – the human voice. Unisys Voice Portal Solutions will provide many benefits to end users. These include the ability to more easily navigate voicemail through the use of their voice and simpler access to Web content where PC portal information is not available. The solutions will also help to maximize a carrier's average revenue per user (ARPU) through subscriptions, transactions and increased voice usage. According to market predictions made by The Kelsey Group, up to 128 million people worldwide will use voice portal services by 2005. In addition, Cahners In-Stat Group has projected that the voice services and voice portal industry may reach $6 billion by 2006. Unisys Voice Portal Solutions – which include Voice Controlled Messaging, Voice Web, and Voice Activated Dialing (VAD) – provide a cost-effective implementation and will continue to work as 3G networks and handsets are deployed in the future.

83. Speech Technology - Interactive Sensory System Division
The SPEECH area covers three projects DITELO, MUNST e SHINE, sharing thesame objective of R D in the field of speech recognition technology.
http://ssi.itc.it/speech.htm
PROJECTS
DITELO
DIalogo su TELefonO is related to speech recognizers for telephonic applications, with the main aim to include them in call-center systems (but not only). This means building acoustic and language models, and offering dialogue capabilities. MUNST
This project aims at advancing the spoken language technology developed at ITC-irst. Investigated areas are:
- multimedia archive processing;
- multilingual communication systems. SHINE
The activities of SpeecH Interaction in Noise Environment (SHINE) project concern recognition and interpretation of speech messages produced in noisy environment. The project has the objective of both conducting research and developing speech recognition prototypes. A third related activity concerns speech database collection and documentation.

Curriculum recommendations on Spoken Language Engineering
General Recommendations [SLE = Spoken Language Engineering] We recommend Motivation
    • The introduction and the extension of curricula on SLE in universities to fulfill strategic needs.
The technological break-through and the market demands in speech technology reached a point where the education and training of a growing number of employees is time consuming. It may be considered to introduce spoken language technology at universities in different ways: the extension of existing curricula with few basic courses, a full SLE curriculum in a dedicated program, through ODL, by a European Masters, etc.
    • To improve and to strengthen the links between industry (research and development laboratories) and universities in the area of SLE.
With the rapid development of computing, SLE has a significant role in Human-Computer Interface applications, mobile communications and multimedia products. The university-industry links are important in the definition of the job profiles, to increase the quality of the training process, to obtain feed-back from real-life applications or to benefit of industry’s support (development, training and mobilities sponsoring).
    • The definition of a coherent system for acquisition of competencies and skills through dedicated training models addressed to various job profiles and to expected changes in the SLE market.

Text-to-speech is a technology that enables the automatic processing of written text to produce speech output. Infovox Text-to-Speech converters convert all orthographic (normally spelled) and phonetic text into syntetic speech. This synthesis is multilingual and is available in 12 languages at the present time: American English, British English, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Icelandic, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish and Swedish. It has five set voices and is also able to store individual voices. Aspiration and intonation can also be varied. Individiual phrases can be stored, and individual pronunciation lexicons constructed for each language. The user can store the pronunciation of words which do not follow the pronunciation rules, e.g. personal names, in the pronunciation lexicon. The speed of reading can be varied all the way up to 400 words per minute and you can read the whole text, sentence by sentence, word by word or letter by letter.

Custom Magazines Speech technology loses its kooky luster By Nicolas Mokhoff EE Times (10/31/02 06:30 p.m. EST) The technology still has a way to go, but that hasn't stopped plans to use the Web as a medium for natural speech between man and machine. "The technology is not there yet for dictation to computers," said Xuedong Huang, general manager of the .Net Technologies Group at Microsoft Corp. "Based on historical extrapolation we will have it in about 10 years." Microsoft launched a speech initiative based on its .Net platform at the SpeechTek 2002 conference here this week and announced the availability of a beta release of the .Net Speech Software Development Kit, which includes tools for creating applications using Speech Application Language Tags (Salt). The kit also supports the development of speech applications that can summon both text and graphics content on desktop PCs and Microsoft's Tablet PCs running the company's Internet Explorer browser software. "Microsoft's Salt-based technologies are designed to easily extend the Web server infrastructure to enable Web access via speech on a wide range of devices," said Kai-Fu Lee, corporate vice president of the Natural Interactive Services division at Microsoft. "We believe that Salt will enable a multitude of speech Web applications and have submitted the standard to the World Wide Web Consortium [W3C] for adoption."
