Genetic programming is an automated method for creating a working computer program from a high-level problem statement of a problem. Starting with a primordial ooze of thousands of randomly created computer programs, a population of programs is progressively evolved over a series of generations. The evolutionary search uses the Darwinian principle of survival of the fittest and is patterned after naturally occurring operations, including crossover (sexual recombination), mutation, gene duplication, gene deletion, and certain aspects of the developmental process by which embryos grow into fully developed organisms. Introduction
Every year since 1977, the ACM has organized the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest . This contest, which consists of a regional qualifying contest and the Finals, provides college students with the opportunity to demonstrate and sharpen their programming skills. During this contest, teams consisting of three students and one computer are to solve as many of the given problems as possible within 5 hours. The team with the most problems solved wins, where ``solved'' means producing the right outputs for a set of (secret) test inputs. Though the individual skills of the team members are important, in order to be a top team it is necessary to make use of synergy within the team. As participants in the 1995 Contest Finals (two of us also participated in the 1994 Finals), we have given a lot of thought to strategy and teamwork. In this article we summarize our observations from various contests, and we hope that if you ever participate in this contest (or any other) that this information will be valuable to you.

    Extreme Programming:
A gentle introduction. The goal of this site is to provide an introduction and overview of Extreme Programming (XP). For a guided tour of XP follow the trail of little buttons, starting here. Returning visitors can jump to recent changes to see what's new.
Let's begin with a simple question:
    What is XP?
As you will see, it is a deliberate and disciplined approach to software development.
Next we might wonder when to use XP . Risky projects with dynamic requirements are perfect for XP. These projects will experience greater success and developer productivity.
But do we need yet another software methodology? Actually we do. XP is a refreshing new approach. XP is successful because it emphasizes customer involvement and promotes team work.
So how could this possibly work? The most surprising aspect of XP is its simple rules and practices . They seem awkward and perhaps even naive at first, but soon become a welcome change. Customers enjoy being partners in the software process and developers actively contribute regardless of experience level.
The rules and practices must support each other. The

    Ron Jeffries
Extreme Programming is a discipline of software development based on values of simplicity, communication, feedback, and courage. It works by bringing the whole team together in the presence of simple practices, with enough feedback to enable the team to see where they are and to tune the practices to their unique situation. In Extreme Programming, every contributor to the project is an integral part of the " Whole Team ". The team forms around a business representative called "the Customer", who sits with the team and works with them daily. Extreme Programming teams use a simple form of planning and tracking to decide what should be done next and to predict when the project will be done. Focused on business value, the team produces the software in a series of small fully-integrated releases that pass all the tests the Customer has defined. Extreme Programmers work together in pairs and as a group, with simple design and obsessively tested code, improving the design continually to keep it always just right for the current needs.

Object-Oriented Programming Jokes This collection of jokes on object-orientation and object-oriented programming was resulted from a message posted in 1994 on the internet for cheering up my C++ students. Since then, I received many replies that are compiled into the current collection. In most cases, the original contributors of the jokes were not mentioned. As a practical solution, I kept the e-mail addresses of the person who sent me these jokes. All jokes are in their original form when I received them. I have done neither revising nor screening, except simple HTML formatting. Hence, I can only be responsible for the formatting errors. If a piece of joke is too long, it is placed in a separated page with a link to it. If you have jokes that have not be collected here, you may e-mail them to me . If possible, please indicate the original contributor of your piece. Last update: May 13, 1996
