Discography of Sir Arthur Sullivan: Instrumental Compilations EMI ASD 2435 Symphony in E, "Irish" Overture di Ballo Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Sir Charles Groves, conductor This recording was the first appearance of Sullivan's "Irish" Symphony on disc, and indeed, the first modern recording of anything substantial outside of the operas. Groves gives a somewhat dull reading of the score, which has been eclipsed, I feel, by the more recent Hughes/BBC recording. The Overture di Ballo , of course, has been recorded many times, and there is nothing remarkable about this reading of it. The issue history below chronicles the release of these items as a pair. Uncle Arthur and William Gilbert "There are so many things I want to do for Music, if God would give me two days for every one in which to do them." Sir Arthur Sullivan, in a letter to his mother W.S. Gilbert "Uncle" Arthur Sullivan Sullivan wrote the music, Gilbert wrote the words, and together they created a series of very English, very witty, and very beautiful operas that have entranced the world from Victorian times to this day. The list includes such works as The Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore, The Gondoliers , and The Mikado . Later on, a third player was added to the Gilbert and Sullivan team. Richard D'Oyly Carte began the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company which first produced many of the operas. The following are watercolor paintings by W. Russell Flint from the book "The Mikado or the Town of Titipu" (Pub. 1928). Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan by Jane Burke 6 November 1995 Brief Chronology Born in Lambeth, London, on 13 May l842. His mother, Mary Clementina Coghian, was of Italian extraction and his father, Thomas Sullivan, was an Irishman. His father was bandmaster at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst and later became professor of brass at the Royal Military School of Music. From 1854 to 1858, Sullivan was a chorister at the Chapel Royal. First publication, sacred song "0 Israel" in 1855. July 1856, at the age of fourteen, Sullivan became the first recipient of the Mendelssohn Scholarship at Royal Academy of Music. There he studied with Sterndale Bennett, Arthur O'Leary and John Goss. Studied at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1858 to 1861. His contemporaries included Grieg and Carl Rosa. 1860 - Sullivan began incidental music to The Tempest , first performed April 1861 in Leipzig and in revision at the Crystal Palace in April 1862. The 1862 concert was a huge success. 1860s - Composition of several concert works (see list of works). He served as organist at St. Michael's, Chester Square and from 1867 to 1872 served as organist at St. Peter's, Cranley Gardens. 1867 - He and George Grove traveled to Paris and to Vienna, where they discovered Schubert's lost

The Hilderstone Miscellany Last updated 15/11/2002 Sir Arthur Sullivan is perhaps best known for his collaboration with W S Gilbert in what became known as the Savoy Operas. However he was a much more important in the history of British music than that. He wrote in several genres. He undertook important research into the compositions of Schubert and his “serious music” was compared with the great Germanic composers. Sullivan certainly made British music respectable and was a precursor to Elgar. He wrote hymns - who among us has not sung Sullivan’s “Onward Christian Soldiers”? Sullivan was a social and sociable person. He moved in fashionable society and was a personal friend of several of Queen Victoria’s children. The day of the parlour song may be long gone, but even today many can remember the song “The Lost Chord”. This too was one of Sullivan’s works. Another very popular song in the 1870s was “The Sailor’s Grave”. The piece by Sullivan (to words by H F Lyte - who was also know for his hymn writing) was dedicated to “Mrs. Bourne of Hilderstone Hall”. The song was so well known a series of picture postcards was produced to celebrate it!

Comyns Carr Page of The Camelot Project at the University of Rochester Sir Arthur Sullivan Though the name Arthur Sullivan may not be immediately recognized, when paired with the name of his counterpart and working companion, W. S. Gilbert, there are few throughout the world who would not know of him. The musical arm of this dramatic duo lived a very interesting and diverse life. Initially finding extensive success through his classical training, Arthur Sullivan's true fame was achieved through his genius as a composer of musical comedies. Unfortunately, this team split up, and Sullivan attempted to continue his work in other genres. It was four years after this famous break-up that Henry Irving approached the aging musician and asked him to work with Burne-Jones to help him create his masterpiece, King Arthur . Five years after the Arthur opened, Sullivan died, having spent most of his fortune gambling, and having lost the luster of his once great fame. On June 24, 1842, Arthur Sullivan was born in South London. He was christened with the middle name Seymour, though after realizing the potentially embarrassing monogram, he decided to revert back to the name on his birth certificate (which was simply Arthur Ssullivan)(Young, 4). Sullivan's father was a band conductor and recognized his young son's talent in music. Sullivan himself attributes his early introduction to music to his father:
