Gustav Mahler was born in Kalischt. He was the son of a poor Jewish pedlar and in later years he referred to himself as a thrice homeless man: a Bohemian among Austrians, an Austrian among Germans and a Jew among the people of the whole world. He began to study piano at the age of six and was already an accomplised pianist when he entered the Vienna Conservatoire at the age of 15. Much of his career was spent as an opera conductor working in Budapest, Hamburg and finally in Vienna, where his energy and competence as artistic director soon made the Vienna Court Opera the finest company in Europe. Mahler resigned from this post in 1907 when he was unable to sustain the workload any longer due to heart problems and the death of his eldest daughter. He spent the last years of his life conducting in Europe and the United States. He was a prolific composer and tried to write music so varied and grandiose that the whole world was reflected in it. Gustav Mahler Works Mahler completed nine symphonies, leaving a tenth unfinished, in addition to Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth), a symphony in all but name, based on old Chinese poems.

Gustav Mahler - his life Gustav Mahler was born on 7 July 1860 in Bohemia and died on 18 May 1911 aged 50. His father was an innkeeper, and Gustav was the second of 14 children, though many of his siblings died as children, and his musical gifted brother Otto committed suicide in 1895. A life so full of tragic events clearly had a major influence on much of Mahler’s output, though there is also much in his music which expresses joy and hope. Mahler has said that his music is about life, and there is clearly an autobiographical aspect to his works, where a "hero" struggles with the meaning of life, death, love and disappointment. However, Mahler withdrew any programmatic comments he had previously made about his compositions saying that they should be appreciated as pure music and this is indeed the best approach. Mahler's musical career: Although always interested in composing, and having composed a number of works before the age of 20 (most now lost), he pursued a successful career as a concert or opera conductor, including posts at Kassel, Prague, Budapest, Hamburg, Leipzig, Vienna, and latterly regular visits to New York. The hugely successful Vienna post, at the height of his conducting career, he secured by converting to Catholicism, and held for 10 years. To the outside world, composing was a sideline and his works frequently being met with disbelief from critics and public alike. His success as a conductor was without doubt and, in that occupation, he also had a reputation for being uncompromising. However, composing was his first love and he developed a routine for composing first at Steinbach during the summer, then at Carinthia at a retreat specially built for that purpose, and later at Tobalch in the Tyrol.

Mahler, Gustav and Richard Strauss Gustav MahlerRichard Strauss Correspondence 1888-1911 . Edited with Notes and an Essay by Herta Blaukopf. Translated by Edmund Jephcott. 172 p., 8 halftones, 5 line drawings. 6 x 9-1/8 1984 Paper USA $15.00tx 0-226-05768-2 Spring 1996 Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss came to know one another as young conductors in Leipzig in 1887. From then until Mahler's death in 1911the year of the first performance of Der Rosenkavalier they kept in touch. Mahler himself described their relationship as that of two miners tunneling from opposite directions with the hope of eventually meeting. This first publication of their correspondence, which includes twenty-five previously unknown Strauss letters, offers a portrait of two men who were as antithetical in their musical means and goals as in their temperaments and personalities, but who exercised a strong fascination for one another. These sixty-three letters show both composers advancing in their careers as they battled against adverse conditions in the musical world at the turn of the century. They present Mahler's energetic support of Strauss's Symphonia Domestica

Biography
Gustav Mahler
Composer and conductor Austria Born 7 Jul 1860
Died 18 May 1911
In many ways, Gustav Mahler was socially eccentric, but in his writing of music he was impassioned and precise. He liked, above all else, to compose for the orchestra, although he was equally proficient at conducting the opera, and he was responsible for elevating the Vienna Opera to a previously unknown level of excellence. In his works, he managed to convey a mixture of profound thought and peasant jollity, creating a musical richness in the tradition of the great Romantic style.
Born in Kaliste, until 1878 Gustav Mahler studied at the Vienna Conservatoire, where he progressed rapidly and attended the older Anton Bruckner's lectures. He swiftly gained employment and his progress up the ladder of Kapellmeisters was swift and effective. He began by conducting operetta at Hall in Upper Austria then, moving a season at a time, he reached Leipzig in 1886 as assistant to Artur Nikisch. There were longer periods at Hamburg, then Budapest, and finally he was invited to become Music Director of the Imperial Opera, Vienna, in 1897. Since Jews were not allowed to hold Imperial appointments, Mahler was obliged to convert to Catholicism. He took up the position and made such an impression with his energy and insistence upon detail that within a few months he was appointed Artistic Director.

GUSTAV MAHLER
"Daß ich sie Symphonie nenne, ist eigentlich unzutreffend, denn in nichts hält sie sich an die herkömmliche Form. Aber Symphonie heißt mir eben: mit allen Mitteln der vorhandenen Technik eine Welt aufbauen", äußert sich Mahler anläßlich der Komposition seiner 3. Symphonie (1893-96) zu seinem neuartigen ästhetischen Totalitätsanspruch, der sich die Integration des Disparaten zum Thema macht.
