The topics record Denise Bacon's attempt to make an American adaptation of Kodály music education philosophy and techniques as they changed and developed, following the 1956 Hungarian revolution. The distinction between this and pre-existing Kodály adaptations in the U.S. is frequently blurred, and Denise Bacon is often credited with being the first to bring Kodály's concept to the U.S. This is only partially true. What can be said of her work is that most (not all) of the current Kodály programs nationwide stem from the establishment of KMTI and KCA. Under her direction, these two institutions existed as independent entities and established a standard of musicianship training that is almost impossible to maintain or replicate in today's society. Neither institution has been financially able to avail itself of the advantages of modern technology, especially the internet and websites. Both appeared to have dropped off the face of the earth. While KMTI lives on as the Kodály Institute at Capital University, KCA has continued independently as a resource center, offering only short early childhood and advanced refresher courses.

Biography
Zoltan Kodaly
Composer Hungary Born 16 Dec 1882
Died 6 Mar 1967
Kodaly was one of three musicians who set out to rescue original Hungarian music from being lost to the 20th century. Ernst von Dohnanyi and Bela Bartok were the others, and it is generally considered that Kodaly's music is stronger than the former's, but not as brilliant as the latter's. He was a great individual collector of native folk tunes, which permeate his music. He also did much important work in music education in Hungary and wrote many choral pieces for schools.
Kodaly, born in Kecskemet, was musical from an early age. His father was a violinist and his mother a pianist and singer. He attended school in Galanta and then Nagyszombat, where he shone in his studies and managed to teach himself the violin, viola and cello simultaneously, so that he could perform at home and in the school orchestra. He also sang and composed, mostly choral and chamber works.
In 1900, he went to Budapest University to read Hungarian and German Language and Literature. At the same time he enrolled at the Academy of Music where he wanted to learn everything they could teach him, even though he already knew more than many of his fellow students. He also joined the Eotvos College, a small institution for gifted teachers where he learned English, French and German. He received diplomas in teaching and composition and a PhD in Hungarian folksong.

Zoltan Kodaly was born at Kecskemét on 16 December 1882, and died Budapest, 6 March 1967. Brought up in the country, he knew folk music from childhood and also learnt to play the piano and string instruments, and to compose, all with little tuition. In 1900 he went to Budapest to study with Koessler at the Academy of Music, and in 1905 he began his collaboration with Bartók , collecting and transcribing folksongs. They also worked side by side as composers, and Kodály's visit in 1907 to Paris, bringing back Debussy 's music, was important to them both: their first quartets were played in companion concerts in 1910, marking the emergence of 20th-century Hungarian music. Kodály, however, preferred to accept rather than analyse folk material in his music, and his style is much less contrapuntal and smoother harmonically. His major works, notably the comic opera Háry János, the Psalmus hungaricus, the "Peacock" Variations for orchestra and the Dances of Marosszék and Galánta draw on Magyar folk music (unlike Bartók, he confined himself to Hungarian material). MIDI FILE - Dances of Galanta for orchestra (14'03'') His collecting activity also stimulated his work on musical education, convincing him of the value of choral singing as a way to musical literacy.
