Claude Debussy was arguably the most influential composer of the late 19th and early 20th century. He attended the Paris Conservatoire where he proved a wayward pianist and rebellious student. He decided then to be a composer rather than a pianist as was his original intention. At the Paris exhibition in 1889, Debussy was attracted to the spontaneous music of the Javanese gamelon and this was to have a decisive and lasting effect on his music. His highly characteristic musical language extended the contemporary limits of harmony and form, with a remarkably delicate command of nuance, both in piano-writing and in the handling of a relatively large orchestra. MIDI FILE - from Chanson No.1 MIDI FILE - from Chanson No.2 Claude Debussy Works Debussy attempted many operas, two based on stories by Edgar Allan Poe. He completed only one, "Pelléas et Mélisande", a version of the medieval play by Maurice Maeterlinck, with its story of idealised love perfectly matched with the composer's musical idiom. Debussy’s first major success, the "Prèlude à l'après-midi d'un faune" ("Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun"), is an orchestral evocation of a poem by Mallarmé.

Claude Debussy (1862 - 1918) Debussy was born in Paris and learned piano initially from his Aunt and later from some of France's finest teachers. He was clearly gifted as a pianist and a composer, won the Prix de Rome for composition and travelled around Europe meeting Liszt and Verdi among others, and also hearing the latest music from the pen of Wagner . However his music did not in any way resemble that of these other composers. Debussy was regarded as somewhat unconventional, always questioning the boundaries of musical traditions. He found a like-minded mentor in Erik Satie and inspired by his musical philosophy and the paintings of his countrymen such as Monet, he developed his own style of music which others labelled "impressionism" in parallel with the artistic movement. Although Debussy disliked the term, it aptly describes the impact on the listener where musical colours and textures assume greater importance as building blocks than the thematic material. Those musical colours involved different scales (such as the pentatonic scale) which Debussy had observed in music from outside the traditional European schools. His usage of the piano in particular was revolutionary, his music seeming to largely avoid the percussive tendencies of the instrument in favour of weaving strands together to create flowing waves or delicate flourishes. His music genuinely painted pictures in a way which had not been done before, though those pictures were not so much rigorously programmatic as evocative allowing the imagination of the listener to fill in the story.

CLAUDE DEBUSSY
Born: August 22, 1862. St. Germaine-en-Laye, France
Died: March 5, 1918. Paris, France
In his own words...

"A symphony is usually built on a melody heard by the composer as a child. The first section is the customary presentation of a theme on which the composer proposes to work; then begins the necessary dismemberment; the second section seems to take place in an experimental laboratory; the third section cheers up a little in a quite childish way, interspersed with deep sentimental phrases during which the melody recedes, as is more seemly; but it reappears and the dismemberment goes on... I am more and more convinced that music is not, in essence, a thing which can be cast into a traditional and fixed form. It is made up of colors and rhythms." French composer and critic. Debussy's music is often associated with the contemporary impressionist movement in painting, and his approach shares some characteristics of this style.
"The primary aim of French music," Claude Debussy wrote in 1904, "is to give pleasure." Debussy, more than anything, was interested in the sensuous quality of music. Even as a student he let his concept of sound override many of the rules he was so assiduously taught by his teachers (much to their consternation). From this he developed a style that was wholly his own, but that also owed much to a wide variety of disparate influences. He also was a passionate champion of a purely French style, and he proudly referred to himself as "Claude Debussy, musicien français."

Claude-Achille Debussy 1909 This is my final research paper on the famous French composer Claude-Achille Debusy and his revolutionary music during the Impressionism movement in France. He is definitely one of my favorite composers of all time because his music is so dream-like and the imagery in there is simply beautiful. Biography
Claude Debussy
Composer France Born 22 Aug 1862
Died 25 Mar 1918
Debussy's music has often been described as 'impressionistic'. This term irritated him and is far from accurate. In fact his music was entirely new: he created an exquisite, sensual sound world, very different from the heavy structures of 19th century music. This is not to say that his compositions were in any way vague: for example, 'La Mer' ('The Sea') is almost entirely programmatic, while in the Preludes for Piano he gives a vivid account of the pictures he is describing - such as 'Sails' or 'Footsteps in the Snow'. Claude Debussy was born in the village of St Germain-en-Laye, near Paris, in August 1862. His parents were poor and struggled to raise their family of five. Debussy had an unsettled childhood with no formal schooling. He managed to obtain music lessons from an Italian piano teacher during holidays with his godparents in Cannes. In 1871, he was taken under the wing of Mme Maute de Fleurville, a pupil of Chopin, who was impressed by his talent and taught him free of charge. In 1873, he entered the Paris Conservatoire. There, he did not shine in performance classes but showed an early interest in unconventional, complex harmonies, and in moving away from traditional musical grammar. In 1879, a new world was opened to him when he began taking jobs as tutor and musician to various wealthy households. His clients included Nadezhda von Meck, who had earlier been Tchaikovsky's patroness. Debussy travelled widely across Europe as one of her household. He also worked for Mme Blanche-Adelaide Vasnier, a singer to whom he dedicated some of his early songs.

He studied for 11 years at the Paris Conservatory, receiving its Grand Prix de Rome in 1884 for his cantata L'Enfant Prodigue. After traveling in Europe and Russia, Debussy settled down in Paris in 1887 and devoted himself to composing for the rest of his life. In his music he developed a new fluidity of form and explored unusual harmonic relationships and dissonances. By making use of the whole-tone scale, instead of the traditional scale of Western music, he achieved new nuances of mood and expression, as in his famous tone poem Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, Nocturnes (1899) and La Mer The Sea
