Home Studies for fun ...and profit For me, studying has always been more a question of having fun than of actually working. In retrospect I might venture to say that I'm just too lazy to diligently apply myself to anything else than having fun. Some of those who know me may want to disagree (I hope...), but I can assure you that I have enjoyed myself almost all the time. No matter what I did or achieved, I always tried to have fun. Rarely did I suffer, not even the night before a school test. Plain, boring, Lutheran kind of hard work was never my kind of dish. Instead of diligence, mother Nature has provided me with a desire to learn things for the sake of discovering. This implies that I have never learnt any useful craft, such as knitting or building bicycle sheds, things my mother and father were good at (...respectively, that is). After a short period of military service in 1956, just one hot summer during which I began my university studies in mathematics while most of my camp mates shot pool in the cafeteria, I managed to rid myself honorably of my previously expressed intention to become an officer in the Swedish military reserve. This meant I also rid myself of the desire to follow in the footsteps of my father. Instead I spent one full year studying Math at the Stockholm University, followed by two years of Chemistry and a year of Theoretical Philosophy before I finally managed to learn something useful in Statistics. When asked what I do for a living I usually answer that I am a mathematician, thus diverting the discussion into more fruitful fields. In fact I consider mathematics more of a language than a profession, but must admit that a background in mathematics comes in quite handy in many situations.

Philosophy of Nanoscale Science and Technology
Praised as the technology of the 21st century with unprecedented revolutionary impact on all aspects of our culture, nanoscale research is now attracting and incorporating a large variety of classical scientific and technological disciplines. This project analyses issues of interdisciplinarity, the relationship between science and technology, the variety of technological paradigms, the role of visions, and ethical aspects of nanoscale research. Part of the project is carried out in the University of South Carolina's Nanoscale Interdisciplinary Research Team
Philosophy of Chemistry
In spite of its considerable cultural significance, chemistry has been nearly neglected by philosophers of science due to the dominating paradigm of mathematical physics. The research project "philosophy of chemistry" tries to elaborate pecularities of chemistry in various philosophical aspects and in comparison to other sciences and technologies. Emphasis is laid both on theoretical and practical topics of philosophy. The project is divided up in several parts:
  • Theory of experimental knowledge of substances Theory of experimental-classificatory methods Semiotics, aesthetics and theory potential of the chemical sign language

Philosophy of Chemistry Electronic Discussion Group Sponsored by the International Society for the Philosophy of Chemistry [ISPC], PHILCHEM is an international electronic forum devoted to the discussion of philosophical issues that arise in chemistry. The list is open to anyone with an interest in any facet of the philosophy of chemistry. The broad aims of the list are to explore issues in the philosophy of chemistry, promoting this important field of study. In particular we aim to encourage interdisciplinary dialog between philosophers and chemists and other parties with an interest in chemistry. To subscribe to the Philchem email discussion list (it's free!), send a message from your usual email address to listserv@vm.sc.edu with a one-line command subscribe philchem Your Name as the body of the message (with your name in place of "Your Name"). You will be asked to confirm the subscription, and then you'll receive a couple of messages with more information about how the list works. As a new member, you are encouraged (but by no means required) to introduce yourself, perhaps with a brief statement of what you might like to discuss with others on the list.

This site is organised by Adam McLean , the well known authority on alchemical texts and symbolism, author and publisher of over 40 books on alchemical and Hermetic ideas.
Alchemy is a complex subject with many different interconnected aspects. Many people still only think of the quest of the philosophers' stone to change base metals into gold. On this web site you will be able to explore the riches of alchemical texts, some of which are wonderful works of allegorical literature, delve into its amazing, beautiful and enigmatic symbolism, and ponder its underlying hermetic philosophy, which holds a picture of the interconnection of the Macrocosm and Microcosm.
This website is so complex and extensive that it can take some time to thoroughly explore all the sections. Clicking on the links in the menubar on the left will allow exploration of the major sections of the alchemy web site. You can also examine a

1873 through 1878, 1878 and 1879, through 1879, Experiments and Experiment Station, philosophy, chemistry, Horticultural, Botanical, Mathematics, Industrial Art
    http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/archives/statewide/schools/ksu/1891/51.html
Transcribed from College Symposium of the Kansas State Agricultural College HISTORY OF DEPARTMENTS. DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY. DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY. In the summer of 1873, the chair of chemistry and physics was established, and Prof. Wm. K. Kedzie was called to the place. Previous to this time, provision was made for teaching these branches by those whose principal work lay in other fields. Prof. Kedzie brought both energy and skill to its organization and equipment, and it took prominent rank among the departments of the College from the start. The work in the department was about equally divided between the two sections, chemistry and physics. From the beginning, the value, in a course of study, of handling the things about which one studies, was fully realized. The Chemical Laboratory was, therefore, equipped with the simpler apparatus to be used by students in their chemical practice or experimental work, as well as with some more expensive kinds for advanced work. With the removal, in 1875, of the College from the old quarters on the "hill" to the present location, and with the increase in the number of students, the need of a chemical building led to the erection of the present Chemical Laboratory in 1876. Its erection greatly increased the facilities for work. At first only a portion of the space in the building was utilized, but the increase in numbers and in the work in the department called continually for additional room, until now every room is fully occupied, and the crowded condition of the laboratory has, for the first time in its history, caused inconvenience. Of course this extension in working space continually called for additional outlays in apparatus, and in the more recent years, full equipment for advanced work has been added.
