Environmental Chemistry
The objective of the Environmental Chemistry Area of Specialization (AOS) is to train research scientists to apply basic chemical principles to the study of the environmental behaviors of natural and anthropogenic chemicals. Environmental chemistry includes interdisciplinary studies of various realms such as geochemistry, transport processes, and toxicology to determine the fate and effects of chemicals in the natural environment. The UMCES Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (CBL) in Solomons, Maryland has just built a new biochemistry research building, an ideal location for studying marine estuarine, and environmental toxicology.
Both the Masters and Ph.D. are research-oriented programs, and emphasis is placed on learning and applying the scientific method, understanding statistical techniques, and developing effective scientific writing skills. Students graduating from MEES through this AOS will find professional positions in Federal, state, and local government agencies (such as EPA, FDA, NIH), private chemical and manufacturing industries, academic institutions, and consulting firms.

Bachelors Degree, Environmental Chemistry
Program Description
Environmental chemists seek to understand and address environmental problems within the context of chemical systems. While environmental chemistry is truly an interdisciplinary field, the particular emphasis on examining natural systems through chemistry and chemical analysis focuses the graduate more firmly within the physical sciences. Key features of this program include coursework on environmental impact assessment, air and water chemistry. By seeking solutions for such chemically based environmental problems as water pollution, hazardous wastes, and acid rain, environmental chemists help ensure a safe, healthful environment for all living things.
The secondary teaching major, environmental chemistry/secondary education, combines a major in chemistry with an interdisciplinary minor in the natural sciences to prepare science teachers at the junior and senior high school level. Students combine a strong concern and background in environmental issues and solutions, with an interest in a career as a secondary teacher. Students complete requirements for a chemistry major with the interdisciplinary group science (DX endorsement) minor, leading to teacher certification which enables you to teach all science subjects grades 7-12. Teacher education programs at LSSU include a full fifth year teaching internship. Contact the Teacher Education Department for additional information Career Descriptions

Definition of Discipline Activities: Environmental Chemistry
The environmental chemistry discipline encompasses a number of related fields of chemistry and is complimentary to other disciplines offered by ELA such as environmental geology hydrogeology mining and remediation toxicology risk assessment microbiology and bioremediation, and environmental and metallurgical engineering . This discipline also is involved in corrosion studies and related failure analysis and in health and safety -related issues.
Environmental chemistry is essentially the science of identifying and measuring the amount of chemicals species in the environment, natural or manmade. It also includes the study of the fate and effects of these chemicals species in the environment. It includes such tasks as defining the intended use of analytical data, preparing sampling plans to satisfy the intended use, selecting appropriate analytical methods, advising on the collection of samples in the field, interpreting laboratory analytical results, and assuring the validity and legal defensibility of analytical results.
In determining fate and effects, it often involves an evaluation or organic and inorganic chemical reactions as well as physical processes such as volatilization, cosolvency effects, and soil adsorption. As such, it is a key ingredient in all other disciplines offered by ELA, such as hydrogeology, remediation, toxicology, risk assessment, bioremediation, corrosion studies and materials failure analysis, and in industrial health and safety-related issues. The broad area of environmental chemistry encompasses a number of related fields, including: analytical chemistry, chemical

The earth's global mean temperature has been increasing. Models that include both warming due to CO2 and cooling due to sulfate aerosols do a good job of reproducing this trend. Mission Statement Global and Environmental Chemistry is the interdisciplinary study of the earth's environmental chemical processes and problems on global, regional and local scales. A wide range of subject matter is included; from atmospheric chemistry to chemical oceanography, from the geochemistry of rocks to biological processing in sediments. Natural process and pollution issues are highlighted in an integrated global context, with application to issues ranging from local pollution to global change. Faculty from several units at the University of Washington are collaborating to offer a graduate program for Ph.D. students leading to a certificate from the Graduate School in Global and Environmental Chemistry. This certificate program will be useful for students who wish to study environmental chemical problems from local to regional to global scales. The University of Washington has exceptional strengths in this area and is an established leader in this new and growing field. UW researchers are tackling many of the most urgent questions relating to global environmental change and are training a new generation of leaders in research, education and public policy. These issues will become increasingly dominant themes in the future. The justification for this initiative is that the science requires it, the students request it, society expects it and we have existing strengths at the UW on which to build such an interdisciplinary program.

The graduate program in chemistry at the University of Oregon offers both. In research, there are a number of world class research projects ongoing such as the development of sensors for selective detection of chemical contaminants, the synthesis of photodegradable polymers, development and characterization of photovoltaic devices and the development and application of nonlinear optical techniques for understanding adsorption at liquid surfaces and interfaces. In coursework students can select from a broad range of of graduate courses that will supply them with a strong fundamental basis in chemistry from which to launch their careers in environmental chemistry or environmental science.
