Title: Vitreous Humor Chemistry in Deaths Associated with Rapid Chilling and Prolonged Freshwater Immersion
Keywords: chilling, death, forensic science, glycolysis, pathology and biology, postmortem interval, vitreous humor, water
Abstract: Vitreous humor chemistry studies were performed on 13 air crash victims who had remained immersed in near-freezing fresh water for seven to eight days. Glucose concentrations were observed to be higher than those in a comparison group of autopsied cases with prolonged postmortem intervals, suggesting that rapid chilling inhibited glycolysis. Evidence of dilution of vitreous humor electrolytes was also noted. After correction for the apparent degree of dilution, the potassium concentrations were found to fall within a narrow range. *PDF not available Return to Main Page

    Molecules with Silly or Unusual Names
    Believe it or not, some chemists do have a sense of humour, and this page is a testament to that. Here we'll show you some real molecules that have unusual, ridiculous or downright silly names. If you know of any other potential candidates for this page, please let me know . People from all over the world have sent me so many contributions to this page, that I've now had to split it into three smaller pages.
    The 3D structure files of many of these molecules can be obtained by clicking on the images. Information on what you need to view these structure files can be found here Arsole
    Yes, believe it or not, there is actually a molecule called Arsole ... and it's a ring! It is the arsenic equivalent of pyrrole, and although it is rarely found in its pure form, it is occasionally seen as a sidegroup in the form of organic arsolyls . For more information, see the paper with probably the best title of any scientific paper I've ever come across: "Studies on the Chemistry of the Arsoles", G. Markl and H. Hauptmann, J. Organomet. Chemists study nature at the molecular level, and the broad field of chemistry is often called the "central science," positioned between the atomic world of physics and the complex living systems of biology. Chemistry is primarily an experimental science requiring well- developed laboratory and problem-solving skills. But theoretical chemistry is also an important field in its own right with strong components of modern mathematics and computer technology. The chemistry curriculum at Carleton deals extensively with fundamental ideas and with experimental chemistry. Undergraduate research is an active part of the program. Please take a few moments to learn about our department ( note : items which are not links will be added soon.):

    Humor: On the Fun Side
  • Capitalism reigns in the atomic world. The unequal sharing of electrons is the central concept of bonding. One of history's most sage remarks concerning sharing was uttered by Winston A. Churchill, Prime Minister of England during World War II. Churchill's quotation was once used in a beer advertisement as follows:
      The inherent virtue of socialism
      is the equal sharing of miseries;
      the inherent vice of capitalism
      is the unequal sharing of Budweiser.
    What did Churchill actually say? (Yes, the unequal sharing of wealth!) This was, indeed, a very wise remark on Churchill's part. Some people do have more Budweiser, wealth, luck, and wisdom than do other people. Some atoms, on the other hand, are more electron-wealthy than others-they are said to be more electronegative! Fluorine is the most wealthy, the most capitalistic of all atoms. Electrons are not shared equally between atoms unless those atoms are the same, so unequal sharing is the normal situation. Capitalism reigns supreme in the atomic world!
