Robert Young and Grandson, Jacob Jacob is now 2 1/2 years. He is big and strong and loves his grandmother and me. His left hand and arm is ok. His problem is with his right arm and hand. Jacob's right hand had 4 fingers and no thumb and his hand turned 90 degrees toward his body. He is missing the large bone in his right arm from the elbow to the wrist. So he only has the one small bone. His right shoulder is smaller and weak. His right arm is shorter and weak. He has almost no gripping with his hand. He can hold things, like cookies, between the fingers on the right hand. A surgeon at Vanderbilt University Nashville preformed 5 operations on his hand. The purpose was to straighten his hand and wrist and to make a thumb from his first finger. These operations were not successful. There was not enough muscle, tendons and bone to support these changes. The surgery did not improve his hand or arm. I think we put the little guy through a lot of trauma that didn't help. His right hand now has a thumb and three fingers. Jacob may be slow and not progressing at a normal rate. He may have some mental development problems. He is attending preschool twice a week and a special training therapy twice a week. So, he is gone out of the house for four mornings of the week. He loves school and his teachers. He loves dogs and other kids. He plays well and is doing better at following the rules at home and at school.

JACOB YOUNG Guitarist and composer . Born: in Lillehammer - Norway, July 1970. Lives: Oslo. E.mail: jayoung@online.no Bios. His American father first introduced Jacob to the intriguing subtleties of jazz at the age of twelve. Since then, he has been exploring his mixed background through music and the result is an exiting blend of American and Norwegian traditions. Studied music at the University of Oslo before leaving to New York upon recieving a scholarship to study at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. In New York City, Jacob studied with guitar greats Jim Hall and John Abercrombie, and took composing classes with Ken Werner and Richie Beirach. He graduated with a B.F.A. in May of 1993. He returned to Oslo , Norway in 1995, after five years in New York, first as a student, later as a freelance musician. While in New York he played with, among others; Junior Mance, Keiko Matsui Band, Arnie Lawrence Fun Co-elation, Larry Goldings, Rashied Ali, John Abercrombie, Jan Erik Vold. He has been heard in many venues in New York including; Zanzibar, Wetlands, CBGB`s Gallery, The Squire, Augie`s and The Cooler. He also appeared at the Willow Jazz Club in Boston, the Penn Jazzfestival and participated in Verve`s 50th anniversary celebration at Carnegie Hall. Cd releases.

Young Family notes . . . The Young family was of Scotch, Irish and English ancestry. Before the Revolutionary War Jacob settled near Jones Falls, Baltimore Co., MD (see notes below), before the Rev. War. Jacob Young with his family emigrated to Armstrong Co. PA. And then some moved on to Johnson Co. IN. Jones Falls is the name of a River Tributary to the Patapsco. Early on people traveled by water, and the areas were mostly known by the Rivers bording them, thus people were referred to as of "patapsco" or "gunpowder" and the "Hundreds" in Baltimore were mostly named for the Rivers. Jones Falls sort of starts in the Green Spring Valley area to the north west of Baltimore City and runs down by Druid Hill Park in the City and then into the Patapsco River. Back then, the square-jawed, blue-eyed, blond-haired Young wasn't too bold, and he didn't consider himself beautiful. In his high school photos, the Washington state native never smiled because, despite being a championship athlete, he says he had low self-esteem. His big break reportedly came when he was working at a Denny's, and a customer with some connections saw him and made some calls to agents and managers on his behalf. It took Young a while to catch on that his acting abilities weren't foremost in his casting. "I never thought of myself that way," he says. The 22-year-old joined the cast of "General Hospital" two years ago in the role of Lucky Spencer, the son of daytime icon characters Luke and Laura. "I hadn't watched the show before," he says.

It was mustered into service in Jan. 1865. Feb.-Sept. 1865. Diary of Jacob Young. He enlisted on Feb. 1, 1865. near Defiance, Ohio for the 188 th Regt. OVI. A few weeks were spent at Camp Chase, Ohio, In February his company was transferred to the 189 th Regt. By Train to Cincinnati, then by river steamer. The Regt. Arrived at Nashville on Feb. 28. By the end of March a fellow enlistee, who had been sick since induction died.
