Begonnen hat die wundersame Karriere der Doris Wishman irgendwann in den 40er Jahren. Doris, die in New York aufgewachsen ist, wollte damals Schauspielerin werden. Deshalb besuchte sie eine private Schauspielschule in Manhattan, wo sie die Schulbank u. a. zusammen mit Shelley Winters drückte ("Ich war allerdings besser als Shelley."). Bald wurde Hochzeit gefeiert und die beiden zogen in den späten 50ern nach Miami, wo auch ein Teil ihrer Familie wohnte. 5 Monate später erlitt Jack einen Herzinfarkt und starb. Doris war verzweifelt. Sie musste irgend etwas tun, um sich abzulenken. Sie wollte arbeiten, nur arbeiten. World Premier Of Doris Wishman's Satan Was A Lady March 9th, 2001 So, when I last visited with Doris , she was working on a film called Satan Was A Lady. She had entered into a partnership with a producer named Beau Gillespie. This is the first time that Doris has ever worked with a producer. She has always been a one-woman show. Having a producer can lift a lot of responsibilities off your shoulders, but a producer can sometimes try to have a hand in the artistic control department. It was going to be interesting to see what Doris ended up with. The world premiere of Satan Was A Lady took place on March 9th, 2001 at the Anthology Film Archives in New York City as part of the New York Underground Film Festival. My friend David, who is the web master at www.doriswishman.com , invited me to the premier and I accepted the invitation. When I met David in New York City, the first thing we did was take the subway to where Doris was staying. We found Doris in night clothing, in bed. She wasn't feeling too well. She ate something that didn't agree with her. Also present was Michael Bowen, Doris' biographer and the gentleman who is kind enough to accompany Doris when she attends these kinds of things. Also present was a friend named Sylvia who helps these guys navigate NYC when they're in town. I sat on the bed at Doris' feet. I was bursting with excitement about seeing this world premier, and I asked Doris "Aren't you excited?!" After all, the last time she premiered a movie was in 1983. Well, she was none too excited. She went on to warn us of how bad it was and how it didn't turn out to her expectations and so on. She also said she may not attend the premier, maybe due to illness, and admittedly wondered out loud if the illness wasn't psychosomatic. Could it be true that we were going to be disappointed? Well, Doris doesn't like much of anything she has done, so why should this be any different? It didn't necessarily mean anything.

She made 26 features between 1959 and 1977. The 27 th feature, a gory horror film, was released in 1983. After a long semi-retirement Wishman made three more films between 1999 and 2002. Wishman was an innovative low budget filmmaker. Her directing, editing and marketing of her films was all self-taught and almost all of her films were self-produced. Wishman's films often featured hand held tracking shots that would be interrupted by cutaways to bizarre shots of ashtrays, bric-a-brac, and characters' knees, hands, and feet. Still, when Wishman, a Miami resident, made a return visit to Boston several weeks ago, New England puritanism reigned. A workshop-panel at the Boston Film Factory sponsored by Women in Film and Video/New England was almost empty of Women in Film and Video, except for a couple of the organization's officers. The membership had been informed, via a mailing, to bring their senses of humors to the free event. No senses of humor, practically no members, even though Wishman, with 24 credited features, has directed (and written, produced, edited) probably more movies than any women in the history of cinema! What went awry is obvious: Wishman, so prolific in the 60s, made inappropriate kind of flicks for terribly proper New Englanders. Her low-low-budget oeuvre includes nudies, "roughies," sexploitations. Her biggest actor names were stripper Blaze Starr and the 73-inch-bosomed Chesty Morgan. Her anti-PC titles (she began with the titles) include Diary of a Nudist, Sex Perils of Paulette, A Night to Dismember, Keyholes are for Peeping. Plots? The Amazing Transplant concerns a guy who grafts his womanizing friend's penis onto his own body. Nude on the Moon is about two astronauts' happy discovery of a lunar race of barebreasted extraterrestials.

As with Wood's defense of crossdressing in Glenn or Glenda?, Wishman used her "B" cinema for stirring didactic purpose: The Amazing Transplant concerns a penis attachment, and the pioneering Let Me Die a Woman (1978) was a sympathetic look at transsexuals faced with "trial by knife." As with Wood, her films are sublimely daffy and deliriously incoherent, on the cusp between beyond-belief-badness and primitivist genius, and with editing choices so odd they challenge Eisenstein. On Saturday, August 10, Doris Wishman died, possibly bringing an end to one of the most unusual careers in movie history. The word "possibly" is added because Doris often proclaimed that after her death she "would continue making films in Hell." If anyone had the drive to make this prediction a reality, it would be Doris. In the 1960s, a time when exploitation was a bawdy boys club where a woman's only role was to be a nudie cutie, Doris Wishman decided to become a filmmaker. She went on to become the most prolific woman filmmaker of the modern era. A Night to Dismember . After the edited negative disappeared, Doris recreated the film entirely from outtakes and unused scenes. While using footage from one movie in another is an old exploitation filmmaking trick, Doris took this technique to new heights. She constantly mixed and matched footage from all of her films. A particularly attractive shot of a woman swimming naked underwater appears in three different films. In her penultimate film, Dildo Heaven (2002), Wishman freely combined footage from the 60s, 70s, and present, as well as mixing film and video, without feeling any need to explain.

The recipient of last year¹s Lifetime Achievement award, we had been looking forward to the possibility that Doris might make the trek back to CUFF for the Midwestern premiere of her latest completed film, Dildo Heaven, when we were stunned to receive the news of her unexpected demise. As a self-taught writer, director, producer and editor, Doris' 29 films make her one of the most prolific female filmmakers in the history of cinema. A career which covered everything from nudist camps to penis transplants, from Sammy Petrillo to Chesty Morgan, makes Doris one of the underground's most enduring and beloved auteurs.
