The Austin Skinny -1999 Date: Monday, March 22, 1999 One of the only winter weekends of the season brewed a stiff cold wind and a near freezing morning to greet 817 racers headed to Flat Creek Crossing outside of Austin for the Schlotzsky's Flat Creek Challenge, race #3 in the Texas State Championship Mountain Bike Series. The sport riders, with a 9:00 start, came to the line bundled up in layers of clothing, and by the time the experts took the line at 11:00, the wind had died a bit and things were warming up slightly. It was still a challenge to keep muscles warm and limber on the 9 mile rocky, hilly, technical loop that some racers shine on and some racers hold on for dear life. The Pro/Expert 30-39 Men once again found team mates Terry Tinney and Brett Gabriel(Trek, Richardson Bike Mart) along with JT Cody hammer off the line. Both Tinney and Gabriel felt great today, but Gabriel had a bit of trouble in the creek bed at the end of the 1st lap and Tinney floored it at the climb and never saw him again. Cody flatted just about that time and the two Bike Mart Boys wrapped up the 1, 2 spots with a big gap. Kevin Vincent (West End/Ibis/Treebeards, Houston) found himself in 3rd place after Cody flatted and was joyfully riding along until the end of the 3rd and final lap when he heard what sounded like a broken down semi which turned out to be Eric Jordan (West End, Austin), who passed him strong and took 3rd place.

Some were apparently fooled by the relative softening of the terrain on Saturday and spent most of the evening making like college students pounding brewski in a college bar in Athens until midnight. Tony Gwinn especially was really paying for it the next day. He said he really didn’t feel good until the last stretch on Sunday. I wouldn’t doubt that he was probably the only rider who finished the ride better hydrated than when he started. All Wheelmen arrived safe and in relatively sound condition. A very congenial dinner followed in a nice Italian restaurant in Worthington. CFC ’01 is now just a fond memory of good hills , great views, and even better cycling companions, the crazy guys and gals of MVW. For many there will be a full winter of cyclo-cross and breakfast rides, but for me CFC is often the last I see of many riders until April. It is always good to end the year with the appetite already whetted for more of the same come next season. I hope even more of you will be back for CFC next year, yes, even if it snows.

Yesterday I had trouble sitting on the back even while they were going intentionally slow to allow the photographer to take action shots from the follow car. So instead I stopped by the room of Glen Mitchell, Burke Swindlehurst, and Mark Walters, all returning team members from last year, to talk about team prospects for the coming season, as well as their thoughts on the new team chemistry and their personal goals. With 11 returning riders on a team of 15, all three agreed that what worked before will work now, and might even work better, with the departure of one consistent personality problem. "Basically you could count on him to not do what the team had planned and to ride for himself," Walters says. "But the rest of us who are returning already get along in races, and we know we travel well together. So, you add in guys like Henk [Vogels] and [Chris] Wherry and it can only get better. We know those guys. We've been racing against them for years. And we all have respect for them as riders. Plus they're good guys."

And this can be a major liability - both for roadies who need that extra edge in road competitions and for mountain bikers who need this upper body strength to lift, jump, or just plain muscle heavier bikes over rough terrain and obstacles. A reasonable approach is to focus on building strength (not bulk) in the winter and maintaining it during the peak riding season. WHY "MUSCLE UP"? 1.The upper body, including abdominal muscles , is an integral part of the pedal stroke. A strong torso provides the rigidity to deliver maximum power from the quads to the pedal. On a level stretch, a strong rider will barely move their upper body while those who are tiring will rock their pelvis on the saddle. And watch a group of road riders in a sprint or a technical single track rider pulling and rocking their shoulders and handlebars. This motion actually levers the bike, adding to the power of their legs on the pedals. 2. The entrance and exit for the Ironman Wetsuit swim leg will be via the entry point and a pathway marked to T1. The swim leg will feature a deep-water start. Should the temperature fall well below the norm, due to freak conditions, it is possible the swim could be shortened. Wet suits and an additional cap/s are advisable in such conditions. Current TA Wetsuit rules will apply. Paddlers and rubber rescue boats will be on the course at all times to provide a safety cover. The swim course closes 1 hour after each official wave start time.

Graph Gardner Martin's Fairing Test Results Recently several new wind fairings have become available to fit your Easy Racer. Zzip Designs has a new medium sized Teardrop fairing and Mueller Human Power has a full front fairing somewhat similar to the Super Zzipper that most of you have on your bikes now. Inquiring minds want to know, "What do these new fairings do? Are they Faster? Quieter? Lighter?" The primary testers were my brother, Mac (5-10" - 215 lbs.) and I (5-10" - 145 lbs.). Mac is built quite different from me. He is very broad shouldered and has big arms and a big chest. Mac is always faster in these tests than I am. But, the comparative results are usually about the same. The speed and distance given for each fairing are the average for both test riders. We tested the Super Zzipper on several bikes and with 4 different riders. The results were not always the same. How the streamlining reacts with different body shapes may give different results for different people. However, I believe that in most situations the Super Zzipper will give the most increase in performance. For even more speed the body stocking Lycra cover helps to flow the wind around the rider more smoothly (the complete setup adds about 5 lbs. to an unstreamlined Easy Racer). Additional weight should be considered especially as it affects climbing. The bottom line is that the improved aerodynamics get you a lot more in speed or distance covered than the extra weight (one - 5 lbs.) slows you down when climbing. The stronger and faster a rider is, the more benefit is derived from better aerodynamics as the strong rider will keep his speed higher and stay above the 10mph range where the aerodynamics start to take effect. Riders who spend more time below 10 mph will benefit less than stronger riders.

Cabin Fever is closing the Toronto Film Festival Midnight Madness series, on Saturday the 14th of September.
