Cubby Broccoli asked Walker after the press screening if he and co-producer Harry Saltzman had a hit on their hands. Walker replied: "Not a hit - a smash hit". On the eve of the premiere of DAD, 40 years and 20 films later, the London Evening Standard has published both a review by Walker of the latest 007 adventure and an interview by the same film critic with Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson. In his review of DAD, which appeared in the Standard's 'Metro Life' magazine (November 14), Walker declared: "The action is rougher, Pierce Brosnan is tougher, the film is more realistic than ever before". Moreover, in Walker's estimation, DAD is: "A colossal piece of production engineering", with Brosnan "thirsting for revenge", a "bizarre adversary" in the form of Rick Yune, a tax-sheltered Toby Stephens who receives a knighthood from Buckingham Palace, and "an exotic Halle Berry as a slinky character called Jinx". Walker concluded: "Die Another Day is an understatement - James is forever". Praise indeed.

HOBSON Calgary Sun HOLLYWOOD Toby Stephens knows he has an enviable pedigree. His parents, actors Maggie Smith and the late Robert Stephens, "neither actively encouraged nor discouraged me from becoming an actor," he says. "I told them that's what I wanted to do around the time I turned 14. I was never good academically so if I turned out to be equally inept at acting, I'd have been in deep trouble." As Gustav Graves, the arch villain of the new Bond movie Die Another Day, on-screen trouble is definitely the name of Stephens' game these days.

Toby Stephens Toby Stephens Gustav Graves Biography Born: 21st April 1969, Middlesex London England The son of Dame Maggie Smith and the late Sir Robert Stephens, Toby Stephens was to the theatrical manor born. An accomplished actor in his own right, Stephens, who bears a distinct resemblance to his mother, was born in April of 1969. After his parents' divorce when he was four years old, Stephens and his brother (actor Chris Larkin) grew up ravelling back and forth across the Atlantic with their mother for her numerous acting engagements. After training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, Stephens began his professional career as a stagehand at the Chichester Theatre Festival. He had his film debut with a bit part in Sally Potter's 1992 adaptation of Orlando, but it was on the stage that he first made a name for himself. At the age of 25, Stephens won a Sir John Gielgud Best Actor Award and an Ian Charleson Award for his title role in the Royal Shakespeare Company's 1994 production of Coriolanus. He went on to perform in a number of plays with the RSC, including Measure for Measure, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Antony and Cleopatra. In 1999, Stephens again stepped back a few eras - this time to the opulent St. Petersburg of the Empire Period - to play Vladimir Lensky, hot-blooded best friend of Ralph Fiennes' Evgeny Onegin in Martha Fiennes' adaptation of Onegin. In addition to his screen work, he continued to perform on the stage, winning particular acclaim for his work opposite Diana Rigg in both Phedre and Britannicus in London and New York.

Graves is another crazy millionaire, and like those before him, Graves may be more than he appears to be. Stephens, however, seems pretty clear, with long, thoughtful answers to the standard Bond questions. You speak a lot of Korean here. How did you study it? I met up with Will Yun Lee, who plays [the villain in the pre-title sequence]. We sort of kind of socialized together for a while and he actually said, "There's a great movie you should see called No Way Out " and he lent me the DVD. Then I bought it and it's actually set in South Korea and it's about these Korean cops and it's a great, bizarre film. It's about tough Koreans and culturally it's very, very different from where I come from. I didn't want to become obsessed by it. You want enough so that the audience will recognize it, but you don't want to bog down with it. Also I had to work with a Korean translator with the bits of Korean I had. I was very proud by the end because Michael Wilson, the producer, told me at the end a lot of the other guys had to be dubbed at the end because of the translation and I was the only person they didn't think needed to be dubbed. So even though probably to Korean ears I sound like I'm probably from Hungary, it's enough to persuade people, I hope.

A flurry of grain falls into a hole in the stage and when the silhouette of Caius Martius (Toby Stephens) looms in the background, the flow stops and the citizens are left, to their discontent, with only a few grains David Thacker and Fran Thompson have set Shakespeare's hot political Roman play in the controversial era of the French revolution. I feel this transposition of the play into less 'ancient' times has given me a much better connection with the plot than if the excellent cast had been jumping about in robes. The Napoleonic uniforms, hair styles, and hats, and the cannons and swords all certainly make this production incredibly dramatic, intense and nail-biting. So what is all the fighting about? Young, brave Caius Martius, played by the excellent new Toby Stephens is a brilliant soldier: he's arrogant, valiant, confident and, as his friend Meninius, the brilliantly energetic Philip Voss, says "his nature is too noble for the world". Martius performs incredibly in an intense, raging battle, and with buckets of blood dropping from his brow, he seeks out and defeats once again Tullus Aufidius (Barry Lynch) at the climax of the battle. Martius' soldiers proclaim him "Coriolanus" after the city of Corioles where he was victorious. But these qualities that give him success as a soldier are the same ones that destroy him as a human living in a democracy. Having been persuaded to try for consul, Martius has to win the people's voices. His arrogance, and their annoyance at their lack of food, cause awful consequences leading to a medley of emotions in the last act.
