Student Profile Bhupinder Singh Chaggar Bhupinder is an up and coming musician who has been learning t to play Tabla since the tender age of seven. He is nineteen years old and is a degree student at the Leeds Metropolitan University studying Music Technology. His elder brother, Davinder, inspired him to learn who is also a Tabla player. Although Davinder was his main inspiration, many other people also inspired him. Bhupinder began to learn from Pt. Manik Rao Popatkar (Benares Gharana). In 1992 he started to learn from Dharambir Singh at Leeds College of Music, who gave him great inspiration. He was then introduced to Pt. Sharda Sahai (Benares Gharana) in 1995. This led to Bhupinder having a Ghanda Bhandan with Pt. Sharda Sahai in February 1996. Having being initiated by Pandit Sharda Sahai, he has improved a great deal. One interesting factor to understand is that when one has been initiated it becomes the responsibility of the Guru or Ustad (master) to teach his or her chela (disciple) and also to make them a complete musican but this can only work if there is equal feedback from the disciple. Bhupinder is a good example of this. His main ambition is to become a producer as well as a performer. He has accompanied many artists such as Dharambir Singh, His Holiness Gokul Utsavji Maharaj, Anindya Banarjee and Shymal Naath. He has been helping out extensively whenever there are recitals held at the Leeds College of Music.

Information
Title : Maharajah Race : Sidhu Jat Religion : Sikh Size : 5,932 square miles Gun Salute : 17 Under British rule this was the most important Sikh state. The ruling families of Patiala, Nabha, Jind, Faridkot, Kaithal and Malaud all claim to be descended from the Raja of Jaisalamer. Phool the founder of this family along with his brother Sandaali became an orphans in 1618, and both were taken under the wing of their uncle. They both visited Guru Har Rai as youngsters along with their uncle, it is said that their uncle told them to rap their bellies to indiacte to the Guru the povety and hunger they were enduring. The Guru blessed Phool and is said to have told him that he would make a king. Phool set up his own village and was often in conflict with local chiefs. This enraged the Governor of Sirhind who summoned him and put him behind bars. Phool died in 1652. He had 6 sons, of whom Rama emerged from this group as the most emininent. The Governor of Sirhind appointed Rama to the post of Chaudari. Rama was killed at Maler-Kotla in 1714. He was suceeded by his son, Ala Singh. Amar Singh continued to use other Sikh leaders to further his aims. He continued to extend his territory. In 1767 during Abdalis 9th invasion of India, Amar Singh paid a sum of 2 lakh rupees to set thirty thousand Indians captured by Abdali as slaves free. For this benevolent act he was given the name of Bhandi Chhor (Liberator of the slaves)

ATHLETICS/FEDERATION CUP
A satisfying meet
S.THYAGARAJAN VINO JOHN
P. Ramachandran is jubilant after winning the 400m. He set a meet mark. IDENTIFIED as the final selection trials for the Commonwealth Games at Manchester and the ATF meet at Colombo, besides being a test of skills for the Asian Games at Busan, the eighth Federation Cup athletics meet in Chennai carried more than the usual significance. Fourteen new marks, seven each in the men's and women's sections, were created in the four-day competition. This underscored the efficacy of the training programmes charted out by the Amateur Athletics Federation of India and the form achieved in the previous events, the domestic circuit and the Inter-State championships. It is not easy to focus on a particular individual in an athletic competition for excellence; each event has a glamour of its own, and even the 3000 steeplechase, an event often ignored by all sections, attracted attention in Chennai. A new time was recorded as well. But two competitors on the distaff side deserve special mention for the progress they have made and for coming in line with a medal prospect at the Asian Games in Busan. VINO JOHN
Sunita Rani proved quite formidable in the 1500m. Her effort at the Chennai Federation Cup was the best in Asia this year.

    91. Early Investigations And The First Reports On State Atrocities
One case from the Muktsar subdivision of Faridkot district involved bhupinder SinghSarang, a fifteen years old lad, a student of class X, and a local football
    http://www.altindia.net/punjab1/punjab/early_investigations_and_the_fir.htm
Early investigations and the first reports on State atrocities The testimonies of victims of police powers, which I recorded, not only established systematic violation of the domestic and international guarantees on inalienable human rights, they also repudiated the grand narrative of Indian officials and their sympathisers who portrayed the situation in Punjab as a war between the patriotic forces and anti-national mercenaries. The evidence collected by me discredited their claims that the government agencies represented the forces of social order, justice and legitimacy. I failed to recognise anything noble in the evidence of police operations. Although some of the cases documented by me might have involved people with extremist connections, I gained the impression that the majority of them had suffered primarily as victims of arbitrariness, police powers gone haywire, absence of safeguards and wilful infraction of fundamental human rights. These investigations constituted the basis of the detailed case studies of human rights violations, which the Committee for Information and Initiative on Punjab published and circulated in the hope that testimonies of victims may persuade many to see that the "war without quarter" would destroy the very basis of the nation in whose name it was being waged. The bulk of these early reports also form part of my book, published in 1991 under the title, " The Sikh Struggle: Origin, evolution and present phase

And then, large tracts of the land already belonged to him. These had been given to his ancestors for services rendered during the Gurkha Wars which had come to an end in 1815-16. A site was selected and the Maharaja began building his summer palace. But an ill omen seemed to hang over the construction area. Local legend has it that the moment anything was built, it would collapse overnight. Dozens of snakes would appear from nowhere and attack the labourers. Then Bhupinder Singh had a dream. A sidh, sidh Sidh baba ka mandir and is revered by many who claim that the sage has the power to grant boons. Maharaja Bhupinder Singh was an avid cricketer and the teams that have played here, include the MCC. Bhupinder Singh was not averse to a spot of fun at cricket too.
