Rear Admiral Shepard was one of the Mercury astronauts named by NASA in April 1959, and he holds the distinction of being the first American to journey into space. On May 5, 1961, in the Freedom 7 spacecraft, he was launched by a Redstone vehicle on a ballistic trajectory suborbital flighta flight which carried him to an altitude of 116 statute miles and to a landing point 302 statute miles down the Atlantic Missile Range.
In 1963, he was designated Chief of the Astronaut Office with responsibility for monitoring the coordination, scheduling, and control of all activities involving NASA astronauts.

Astronaut Alan B. Shepard, Jr.
The Power of Not Giving Up Took Him to the Moon In the powdery surface of the moon at Fra Mauro lie two golf balls. They are waiting to be pitched high into the inky starlit vacuum and on to their next roll, some hundreds of yards farther along the surface. They are waiting for a worthy golfer. They are waiting for someone special to pick up where Alan Shepard, the man who first struck them, left off. They are waiting for that one man or woman who wants it badly, the one who just won't give up until they've played the course at Fra Mauro. Alan Shepard was one of those kids who hung around airports when aviation was just getting established in the thirties. After school and on weekends, he'd high-tail it to the landing field so he could help push airplanes in and out of hangars. Sometimes the pilots would let him sit at the controls and work the stick. When they felt it was time for a bigger reward they'd take Alan flying with them. He knew then that aviation was going to be his life. It was just a matter of sticking with it. Alan Shepard didn't have a privileged upbringing, nor did he suffer great hardships. He started off just like most of us. Actually, his early education was more in the setting of an earlier era. The rural schoolhouse in East Derry, New Hampshire had one teacher, six grades and one room. Alan

Official NASA portrait of Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard. In 1961, I lived in a small town in Florida called Neptune Beach. On May 5, I remember excitedly watching a small glow rise into the sky to the south and knowing that we had just sent a man into space. That man was Alan B. Shepard, Jr., one of the original seven Mercury astronauts. He was the first American to dare the unknown and enter space. His flight that day was a spectacular feat, even if he didn't even orbit Earth and even though the flight lasted only 15 minutes. That was Shepard's first flight, but not his last. As part of the Apollo 14 crew, he landed on the moon on February 1971. He became the fifth person to walk on the moon and the first to hit a golf ball there that in his words went for "miles and miles and miles." I guess there is a lot to be said for the effect of the moon's gravity. Shepard died in 1998 at the age of 74.

Although Shepard fired off those two golf balls in moon gravity which is about one-sixth of earth's ( moon fact sheet ), they did not go miles and miles and miles. Shepard later appended his estimate to drive distances in the 200 to 400 yard range. Still, not bad with one hand and encumbered by a suit that prevented a good pivot on the swing. NASA/AP Moon Walk: Astronaut Alan Shepard on the Lunar Surface in 1971.
Wednesday, Jul. 22, 1998
WASHINGTON: Another of the high-flying seven has fallen. Alan Shepard, who in 1961 became the first American in space and, a decade after that, perhaps rescued the space program from oblivion, died Tuesday night at age 74. "There are few people with a more exalted place in the pantheon," says TIME space correspondent Jeffrey Kluger. "He was the first. But even more remarkable was his second trip." After 10 years on the ground with ear trouble, Shepard was 47 in 1971 when, with very little training, he took the Apollo 14 lunar module back up and spent 33 hours on the moon's surface. "At that time, on the heels of the Apollo 13 near-disaster, people were asking whether space was worth the risk. Shepard succeeded at a very critical time for NASA." Of course, while he was up there he also hit a couple of golf balls, and perhaps that's the way Americans who watched it will remember him. But Kluger says that Shepard was known as "the ice commander" for good reason. "He was either all business or he was this genial swashbuckling rocket jock, and he would switch back and forth without warning, according to his own internal clock." Whatever foibles this space pioneer carried inside him, they never poisoned the camaraderie among the original seven Mercury astronauts named by NASA in April 1959. Not too long ago, says Kluger, Shepard was talking to John Glenn about Glenn's upcoming space flight. "Glenn told him that it could be Shepard going up, except he wasn't old enough."

Mercury 3 ... Milestones Alan Shepard, the first American to go into space, died Tuesday, 21 July, in a Monterey, California hospital. He was 74. Shepard was part of the Mercury 7, the team of American astronauts chosen to fly the missions of the U.S.'s first space project. In 1961, he became the first American in orbit, when his spacecraft, Freedom 7, followed a high parabola from the launch site, into space, to splash down in the Atlantic ocean. During his 22 minute flight he spent five minutes in space. He was so well strapped into his pilot's chair that he had to release a pen and watch it float to confirm that he was weightless. Shepard later walked on the moon during the Apollo 14 mission. He is famous for playing golf on that mission, whacking balls with a golf club he had brought along. Shepard was chief of NASA's astronaut office from 1971 until his retirement in 1974. What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal.

WASHINGTON Astronaut Alan Shepard, the first American to fly in space and one of only 12 Americans to walk on the moon, died late Tuesday at a hospital in California. He was 74.

AP
Shepard, one of the revered original seven Mercury astronauts named by NASA in April 1959, died at Community Hospital near Monterey, Calif., said Howard Benedict, executive director of the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation in Titusville, Fla., who had talked to Shepard's wife.
The former Navy test pilot made a 15-minute suborbital flight five of those minutes in space on May 5, 1961, aboard the Freedom 7 spacecraft.
Ten years later, after overcoming a serious ear infection that lingered for six years, Shepard returned to space for his second and last flight as commander of Apollo 14 on Jan. 31, 1971.
Shepard spent 33 hours on the moon during the third lunar landing mission and became the only lunar golfer, playfully whacking golf balls with a six-iron. On that flight, Shepard, Edgar Mitchell and Stuart Roosa spent nine days in space; Mitchell and Shepard stayed on the moon for two days.

PEOPLE IN AMERICA - October 27, 2002: Alan Shepard
By Avi Arditti VOICE ONE: I'm Shirley Griffith VOICE TWO: [Image Removed] And I'm Steve Ember with the VOA Special English program, People in America. Each week we tell about someone important in the history of the United States. This week we tell about astronaut Alan Shepard, who was the first American to fly in space. MISSION CONTROL: "Three, two, one, zero ... liftoff!" SHEPARD: "Roger, liftoff and the clock has started." VOICE ONE: [Image Removed] The clock has started. With those words, Alan Shepard became the first American to travel into space. He was in a small spacecraft called Freedom Seven. It was on top of a huge rocket traveling at more than eight-thousand kilometers an hour. [Image Removed] Fifteen minutes later, Freedom Seven came down in the Atlantic Ocean. Alan Shepard was a national hero. He had won an important victory for the United States. The date was May Fifth, Nineteen-Sixty-One. The United States and the Soviet Union were in a tense competition for world influence. And this competition was reaching even into the cold darkness of space. VOICE TWO: In Nineteen-Fifty-Seven, the Soviet Union launched the first electronic satellite, Sputnik One. The United States successfully launched its first spacecraft less than four months later. Now the two sides were racing to see who could launch the first human space traveler.
