Norma Shearer's poise, intelligence, her seemingly easy laughter, and sense of high style masked a deep insecurity and a tendency toward depression.
http://www.brightlightsfilm.com/16/norma.html
BY GARY MORRIS MGM can be considered the prime mover in this realm; its motto "More stars than there are in heaven" was not mere hyperbole, but hinted at the real ability of movie stars to satisfy longings once confined to religion.
The Divorcee , for example, the emphasis is on modern Strangers May Kiss, Let Us Be Gay , and A Free Soul (with Clark Gable) also showed the modern woman torn between the desire for self-fulfillment and the inevitable dragging forces of convention. (Shearer's ultra-chic contemporary style was usually signified by her seductive Deco wardrobe, courtesy of MGM's top designer, Adrian.) Toward the end of her career, George Cukor The Women . Here, Norma's familiar ruthless buoyancy and unyielding "goodness," contrasted with Joan Crawford

Marie Antoinette Romeo and Juliet to the lead in Marie Antoinette Private Lives and Eugene O'Neill's too-well-named Strange Interlude New York and into the dream world of the movies. A streak of insanity (manic depression) ran through the family that also threatened, and sometimes seemed to claim, Norma. Moviegoers of the 1930s responded strongly to Shearer's ceaselessly upbeat, smilin'-through attitude, but the mask that imparted this feeling showed increasing cracks as time went on. Shearer passed from venerated star to bewildered, contentious widow when her powerful husband died in 1936. Her movie career ended with Her Cardboard Lover in 1942, and she became a bitter, depressive recluse, now lost in her dream.

click here M The future star began life as Edith Norma Shearer on August 11, 1902. She was named for her mother, Edith Fisher Shearer, an English woman from a family that had produced a long line of clergymen. Norma's father, Andrew Shearer, a Scotsman, was a general contractor and construction company executive. Norma and her older siblings, sister Athole and brother Douglas, grew up in one of the homes her father had built for the well-to-do on Grosvenor Street which runs up the slopes of the mountain that is both the source of its name and the main geological feature of Westmount. The original of this early cigarette card is in the Northern Stars Collection. Athole found employment as an office clerk, and Douglas, who would later go on to become one of the most important behind-the-scenes people in Hollywood, found a job as an assistant technician with an electrical engineering firm. This change in their circumstances seems to have been the impetus that eventually led all of them to Hollywood. Had money problems not forced the family to rethink their future, chances are Norma would have grown up as a nice looking kid from an affluent family in what was then Canada's richest neighbourhood. She would have probably married well, lived in a big home and raised a family. But now, in the summer of 1920, all of that seemed impossible. Within a few short months, Norma's mother would make a vital decision. A decision that would change theirlives. No one thought that Hollywood was in their future, but Mrs. Shearer realized there was little or no future for her daughters in Montreal. She separated from her husband and moved with Athole and Norma to New York in the hope of giving them a chance to exploit their looks and maybe, with some luck, begin a career in the theatre.

from Norma: The Life of Norma Shearer by Lawrence J. Quirk Norma Shearer always listed her first official picture as The Flapper , starring the lovely Olive Thomas, who would within the year marry Jack Pickford and die mysteriously of barbiturate poisoning in Paris. Offered the usual five dollars a day, Norma manuevered to turn her extra work into her first bit part, fleeting to be sure, but she did escape the cutter this time out. Daring and enterprising as always, Norma also managed to get Athole into the picture as an extra, and, pulling a colossal bluff, haughtily informed the assistant director that she needed better clothes and needed one hundred dollars to buy them. Her air of experience impressed the man, and the got the money. She used it to get the eye operation Jimmy Quirk had recommended.
The film was largely shot in Tarrytown-on-Hudson, and one scene called for one hundred extra girls and bit players to go sliding down a long hill on bobsleds. Several of the girls, including Athole, were seriously hurt in the stunt, and Athole landed in the hospital for weeks, leaving Norma to carry on alone.

Condensed biography from Baseline's Encyclopedia of Film Child model and bit player in New York-based films whose appearance in THE STEALERS (1920) caught the attention of producer Irving Thalberg. Thalberg signed Shearer to a long-term contract with MGM in 1923 and married her in 1927, after which she had her pick of films, parts, directors and one cameraman who even photographed her costume tests. Compensating for a lack of natural beauty with great poise and charm, she played a narrow range of romantic roles in a glittering array of films. She Could Have Been The Greatest!
Edith Norma Shearer was born on August 10, 1902 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Her childhood was very pleasant and active where she would ski, swim, ice skate, and play musical instruments such as the piano. By the time she was nine she saw a local production and knew right there she wanted to be an actress. When she was fourteen she won a local beauty contest and felt this would be the thing to give her a start once she started her quest for stardom. In 1920, her mother took Norma and her sister to New York to try out for the Ziegfeld Follies. Even though the Follies rejected her she managed to find work as an extra in several films, the first being THE SIGN ON THE DOOR and THE FLAPPER both in 1920. Her mother being star-struck herself, encouraged Norma and her sister every step of the way. By the time she made it to California, MGM was established which was destined to be the greatest studio in history. Norma made a number of small films for them, but none received top treatment from the studio. The one thing they did do was help enhance Norma's image and improve her acting. Finally, her big break came in the film THE STUDENT PRINCE IN OLD HEIDELBERG in 1927 with the role of Kathi. Motion pictures were changing and Norma had no problem making the transition from silent to "talkie" pictures. Her first sound movie was THE TRIAL OF MARY DUGAN.

Norma Shearer
"I always chose sophisticated parts because you can't really be interesting as a young girl, or outstanding as an ingenue."
Edith Norma Shearer was born on August 10, 1902, in Montreal, Canada. In 1920 Norma moved to New York with her mother and sister to pursue an acting career. She auditioned for the Ziegfeld Follies but was told she wasn't beautiful enough to be in the show. Norma got work as an extra in several silent films and was spotted by producer Irving Thalberg. He helped Norma get a contract with MGM. Norma and Irving married in 1927 and they had two children together. In 1930 Norma won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in The Divorcee. The following year she starred in A Free Soul with Clark Gable and received another Oscar nomination. Norma starred in MGM's most prestigious films including Smilin' Through in 1932 and The Barretts Of Wimpole Street in 1934. Norma photographed by George Hurrell
Some other actresses at the studio believed that Norma got preferential treatment because of her marriage to Irving. In 1936 Irving died at the age of thirty-seven. Norma was devastated and began to lose interest in her career. She costarred with Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell in the 1939 movie The Women . Norma married Martin Arouge, a ski instructor, in 1942 and retired from making movies. She spent her much of her time traveling and enjoyed living life away from the spotlight. In her final years Norma suffered from Alzheimer's disease. She lived at the Motion Picture Retirement Home until her death from pneumonia on June 12, 1983. Norma is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California.
