An interview with... Cathy Rogers Jay: Cathy, I am absolutely beside myself that I get to 'chat' with you about Scrapheap Challenge/Junkyard Wars. I'd like to begin at the beginning, which makes sense I guess. What is the genesis of the show? Cathy: I fear this is the most over told story in history - but it was originally inspired by the Apollo 13 movie and the scene where they have to make a life-saving widget out of what is essentially rubbish. It evolved through various non-conducive-to-living 'let's recreate historical situations' type permutations, an array of inappropriate presenters, landed in a scrapheap and the rest as they say.... is a cliche. J: I have to say that I had never heard that before. Who would think that Tom Hanks would inspire such a wonderful TV show? The second most obvious question is how you became co-host. C: By accident pretty much. For the second series we wanted to make quite a few changes - one being the desire for an additional host - Robert was lonely and needed a little pal to talk to. I kept auditioning people, thought they were good and went in to propose we hire them to Channel Four. Channel Four kept saying no - she's not quite right - too young, too old, not sciencey enough, too sciencey etc. Eventually it was a fortnight before shooting and they said 'Why don't you do it?' and I said 'no no no no oh ok yes'. J: Had you had any previous on-camera work before this gig?

Ashleah -What was your favorite subject in school and why? Cathy -Maths I'm afraid to say. I think I liked having my brain tied in knots. Ashleah -Who did you look up to when you were a kid and why? Cathy -Erm - That's a good one. I used to want to be Kate Adie, a famous British news reporter for a while. Then I went through a kind of intellectual phase. Then a pop phase, but I have never been really big on role models, not sure why. Ashleah -What did a kid back in the 70s in Britain wear? Cathy -Oh it was awful I can tell you. I wore lots of BURGUNDY coloured clothes - how horrific. I had a bowl hair cut like Blackadder and terrible scarves and used to tuck all manner of sweaters into my trousers. Honestly you would weep at the horror of it all. Ashleah -What was your favorite thing to do as a kid? Cathy -Making the weirdest concoctions with my friend Jane. We would get loads of sauces and potions and cleaning products - anything we could find around the house. Then we would put them in see-through plastic bags and put them in the road, and cover them with very un-camouflaging camouflage (like twigs and stuff, which stood out for miles on the uninterrupted asphalt) and wait for a car to come and drive over them. These vile fluids would spurt everywhere, and we would cackle like witches. Ashleah -In school what type of person were you? Geek, popular, in-between etc.

Another is woman in a choker. I'm not sure what it is, really, but I am sure I am not alone in these particular little fetishes. It's probably of no great surprise then that the blond co-host of Junkyard Wars caught my eye, or should I say, my ear. Junkyward Wars, for the unwashed among us, is one of the few cool things that you can find on cable. It's an American spin-off of a popular, and slightly cooler show with the same premise from England called Scrapheap Challenge. The only thing in common with all of the shows, and all of the seasons, is Cathy Rogers, the afore-mentioned spikey haired english accent toting choker wearing co-host. The male hosts seem to come and go but somehow she's been there through it all. I couldn't help wondering where they found her, and where did the show come from in the first place anyways. Loyal viewers of the traditional Scrapheap Challenge will know host Robert Llewellyn. For the truly devout among you, be surprised that he played Kryten on the fabulously funny cult sci-fi hit Red Dwarf. But who cares about him, really. What about the chick.
