- Sam Raimi on landing the job of director for "Spider-Man". Of course, it wasn't love alone for Spider-Man that granted Raimi the position. Sam brought a wealth of experience to the table. He was the driving force behind the 3 Evil Dead films. He also directed "The Gift", "Darkman", and "A Simple Plan". As a television producer, he experienced tremendous success with "Xena" and "Hercules." In 1994 he co-produced "TimeCop" starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Ron Silver. Once he was hired as director, Sam Raimi began to face the pressure and the challenges of filming "Spider-Man". Expectations of Spider-Man fans were high. He had to bring a comic book hero to life and make him real. How do you make Spider-Man come across as a normal person? Raimi used the talents of actor Tobey Maguire, whom he spotted in "The Cider House Rules". Maguire turned out to be a perfect choice, playing the part of the introverted teenage Peter Parker. Raimi also kept his version of Spider-Man close to Stan Lee's original comic strip, which shows that Spider-Man is only human afterall, makes mistakes in life, and faces the same common everyday problems that we do. | |
