CIC Members (Chief Academic Officers) Founded in 1958, the CIC Members (Chief Academic Officers of the CIC member universities) provide leadership and direction, identify new initiatives, establish policies and priorities, discuss proposed activities, evaluate existing programs and address collective concerns. The Members fund the central CIC headquarters office operations through annual dues and assessments. While the title may vary from university to university (most frequently Provost or Vice President for Academic Affairs), the Chief Academic Officer is typically responsible for oversight of the educational policies, budgets, and work of the universities. Customarily, the Deans on each campus report to the Chief Academic Officer, as do those university offices that provide service across the colleges such as the university library. The Chief Academic Officer oversees faculty hiring decisions and practices, as well.

Los Angeles' Jon Bruno Keynoting Council
The Rt. Rev. J. Jon Bruno became the sixth bishop of Los Angeles on Feb. 1, 2002, with a seating ceremony scheduled for Feb. 9, in Echo Park, surrounded by more than 1,000 Episcopalians from throughout the diocese standing hand-in-hand, encircling the park's lake. Among priorities that Bishop Bruno has set for his episcopate is his call to Southland Episcopalians to be people of mission for the Christian faith. He has identified the "facts" of such mission as formation in faith, a sense of the abundance of God's generosity, competence, truth and service. In his call to mission, Bishop Bruno encourages clergy and laypersons to "plan and prepare for God's service, work for abundance; and care for the community as we would care for Jesus." A resident of Pasadena, Calif., Bishop Bruno is married to Mary Bruno, a law administrator in Los Angeles and a long-time human-resources professional. Their family includes three adult children - Jonelle Bruno, Philip Bruno and Brent Woodrich - daughter-in-law Andrea Woodrich, and two grandchildren. Bishop Bruno was elected Bishop Coadjutor of the six-county Diocese of Los Angeles on Nov. 13, 1999. Within Episcopal Church polity, a Bishop Coadjutor is elected to succeed a Bishop Diocesan at such time as the latter chooses to retire.

November 22, 1999 MEMORANDUM TO: Provost Lou Anna K. Simon FROM: Professor Jon Sticklen, Co-Chairperson, University Committee on Academic Policy, and Professor Jeanne Wald, Co-Chairperson, University Committee on Academic Policy BACKGROUND The "Student Laptop Proposal" was transmitted to the University Committee on Academic Policy for its consideration on October 29, 1998. UCAP has devoted considerable effort to an intensive review of the proposal and its implications for the University community as a whole. The committee has solicited commentary broadly from faculty colleagues, from ASMSU through its student members, and through College advisory committees. UCAP also had the opportunity to secure information in meetings with Vice Provost Hunt and members of CCSAC. In addition, it met twice with the Provost to share concerns with her and to gain a deeper understanding of the issues. The Committee wishes to express its thanks to the Provost, the Vice Provost for Computing and Technology, members of the CCSAC, and the many faculty and students who have helped to inform its deliberations. RECOMMENDATION: At its meeting of November 11, UCAP unanimously endorsed the following recommendation:

2002-03 Bush Teaching Scholars
Writing Across the Curriculum Workshop Summer Funding Developmental Leave Supplements I believe that in the long run advances in the scholarship of teaching cannot be sustained by the efforts of isolated scholars working alone or in loose networks. Institutions in which these scholars work must develop more formal structures that merge the institution's commitments to both teaching and inquiry. These institutions can then serve as platforms for the work of scholars of teaching, as sanctuaries for their efforts, and as forums for their scholarly exchanges. Lee Shulman, Opening Lines , p. 99.
Meet the 2002-03 Bush Teaching Scholars
Photos and Project Descriptions
Next month, a new group of Bush Teaching Scholars will begin work on projects designed to explore significant questions related to teaching and learning in their disciplines. Following in the footsteps of the first cohort of Bush Teaching Scholars, whose projects we reported on last year, these ten faculty from across the university will each receive a $3000 stipend, which will enable them to take part in a two-week summer seminar, pursue a teaching project of their own design, and meet together on a monthly basis during the following academic year. This year's group includes: Gayle Baldwin (Philosophy and Religion), Jeff Carmichael (Biology), Robert Dosch (Accounting and Business Law), Kim Fink (Art), Dorothy Keyser (Music), Vikki McCleary (Physiology), Patrick O'Neill (Economics), Ken Ruit (Anatomy and Cell Biology), William Shay (Chemistry), and Dale Zacher (Communication).

NEW UNIVERSITY CENTER FOR LEADERSHIP STUDIES CREATED BLACKSBURG, Jan. 25, 1999Virginia Tech has established a new Center for Leadership Studies in the Pamplin College of Business that will offer leadership development programs for students throughout the university, support academic research in leadership, and raise funds for its activities. The center seeks to raise $10 million in private funds over the next three years toward scholarships ($2 million), professorships ($2 million), and program support ($6 million). Its director will report to Pamplin College Dean Richard E. Sorensen, who will oversee the center with the help of an advisory board. As the position is not currently funded, Sorensen will temporarily serve as director, an appointment that is expected to last for about two-and-a-half years. "The center provides a convenient home for all leadership programs on campus," says Sorensen. Representatives of various leadership programs around campus moved toward creating the center, he says, recognizing a need to expand leadership opportunities for all students—not just business majors or cadets—and to share resources, coordinate existing programs, and avoid duplication of effort. The Corps of Cadets Center for Leader Development (CLD) will move to the Pamplin College from the College of Arts and Sciences, which had initiated and developed the center. Communications studies professor Bob Denton will remain as CLD director and Thomas Rice Chaired Professor.
