THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN IDEALS THROUGH COMIC BOOKS Christopher Kenny While girls enjoyed their subset of comics in the second half of the 1940s, boys satiated their pulp appetite with crime comics that involved bank robberies, murders stemming from passion and deceit, and other scandalous and delinquent storylines to make any decent parent disapprove. Lots of people feared “copycat” crimes inspired by these depraved stories that showcased the darker side of life. Parents were at attention, then, when EC Publishing began to publish some of the most graphic and seedy—though ingenious and charming—horror stories in the early 1950s. (These comics would later inspire the HBO television series Tales From the Crypt, which borrowed the character the Crypt Keeper from those infamous comics.) Horrible zombies and tentacled, brain-eating aliens were a few of the menagerie of freaks and ghouls that wreaked havoc throughout the pages of horror comics, which other publishing companies started to dabble in, following EC Comics’ lead. The mainstream companies—Marvel and DC—were getting darker and grittier. More characters were presented as unhinged, and their motivations usually stemmed from the death of a family member or a loved one. Vengeance was the prime motivation of the comic hero of the 1980s.
