Nearing the corner of Frith and Old Compton Street, I spotted the player performing with pre-recorded backing tapes. I was most impressed and, chatting to this street troubador, found that his name was Karl Mellor, and he kindly handed me a CD of his in return for my making him famous in JARS. Karl was at great pains to point out that he was an 'honest street musician' and not to be confused with a disgraced politician.

Elaine Astrue's PBP 1999 Adventure
I finished PBP in the allotted time - 83 hours. I had 84, actually 85 after they gave all the riders an extra hour. It seems no one actually measured the course beforehand, and it was 1250 km, not 1200. (One extra hour doesn't seem sufficient to go 50km does it?) I knew there was no hurry at the end, so really took my time. Throughout the ride, I never pushed or hammered. That was probably one thing that went right. Another thing that went right was being part of the Davis Bike Club. It was like being part of a huge family out there in the French countryside. Seeing people I knew and just exchanging a comment or two gave me a real boost during the ride. That evening while riding between Carhaix and Loudeac I have a bad case of heartburn from some soup at the Brest Controle. This is my first ever heartburn experience and it is like being stabbed in the chest repeatedly. I have it for the rest of the ride and for a day afterward. The stomach acid burns my esophagus and it is hard to eat anything or even swallow. And one has to eat constantly on PBP. It is horrible. I can stave it off, though, for short periods of time by eating something non-acidic. My chocolate and mocha energy bars are now useless, so from now on, I eat what I can, whenever I can. After another shower and 2.5 hour nap in Loudeac, I am back on the bike, enjoying some relatively flat, scenic countryside and the same tailwind as the day before. There is a boulangerie in a town we ride through and lots of cyclists stop. The boulangers are making pastries as fast as they can - they bring out a full, hot tray. I buy 2 or 3, and consume them quickly and directly from the bag on the sidewalk when a well-groomed local woman walks by. With a bemused smile on her face, she says to me, "

In this case, the attack upon the power of the City of Augusta to levy an occupation tax arises under somewhat unusual circumstances. The pertinent undisputed facts, as gleaned from the record, [Fn1] are as follows: Fn 1. In ruling on the motions for summary judgment, the Court has considered only the evidence in the file. However, it should be disclosed that I have seen and heard a demonstration of Blackie's abilities.

and do it right
By James R. Davis
This weekend Elaine and I did an 800 mile trip to attend a State rally for the G.W.T.A. held in a tiny town in central Texas called Goldthwaite. Other than having to ride through heavy winds and rain for about 100 miles on the return leg of the trip the weather was wonderful. In fact, the trip was terrific in all particulars and would have been perfect had we only spent an additional $2 the last time we had the rear tire on her bike replaced. We were 40 miles from our destination on Saturday morning when we decided to check the air pressure in our tires. (The tires were cold, we had spent the night in this small town and were just starting out.) Elaine's tires were a little low so we went three blocks to a gas station for some air. Elaine had the air hose in her right hand and had taken the cap off the valve stem on the rear tire with her left hand, then as she was mating the hose and the stem a funny thing happened - the stem BROKE almost in two! Over the years the rubber had deteriorated and become brittle. A little sideways pressure was all it took. Now there are no motorcycle shops in the tiny town we were in. In fact, the closest town with a shop in it was 35 miles in the direction we had just come from. But 40 miles ahead there were a couple of hundred friends - and so we decided that was the best course of action to take. We chained her bike to a steel post, unpacked her personal things from her bike and she along with her things became a passenger on my bike for the next 40 miles.

Multilingual Influences in English Spelling
Elaine Miles Dyslexia Unit, University of Wales, Bangor, Gwynedd LL57 2DG e.miles@bangor.ac.uk Abstract This paper describes the different layers of language to be found in English spelling. Understanding of these will be a help to the teacher in steering a way through the irregularities, and the interest of older pupils can be stimulated by relaying some of it, thereby helping them to remember better. A strong Germanic basis was established by successive invaders who shared a similar language background and who could probably understand each other, but this oral language could not be fully expressed by the Latin alphabet chosen to write it down. The protracted Norman occupation introduced some quite different sounds and spelling patterns, which were difficult to reconcile with the existing ones. Several different accommodations resulted. Some attempts to restore Latin derivations in the enthusiasm of the Renaissance had some disastrous consequences for a few words. Uniformity was not enforced.

‘Dump No More’ march a show of solidarity
By elaine van develde
Staff Writer
JEFF HUNTLEY Marchers against ocean dumping pass by the Monmouth Beach sea wall en route to Sandy Hook last week.
TThe blistering hot sun shone brightly on the staunch will of Clean Ocean Action last Friday morning. It was the last leg of a journey traveled in defiance of ocean dumping. As people ages 2 months to 82 prepared to walk the last few paces in that 125-mile protest journey along the shore, T-shirts were doled out and spirits soared. Banners read "Dump No More, March for the Shore." Blue ribbons representing the ocean’s lifeline were signed, and literature was gathered. A plastic bottle filled with muck and labeled "Sediment under NY Bay, Brooklyn" was displayed on a table.

We got a total of 12 miles under our belts before the engine blew. Elainewas going 70 MPH and was in the fast lane of a four lane wide freeway.
    http://www.msgroup.org/TIP025.html
By James R. Davis A couple of years ago a friend of ours joined us on a 1,200 mile tour. She is a conscientious lady and wanted to make sure her motorcycle was ready and safe before we left, so she took her Wing to a dealer and had them do some work on it for her. Among other things, she had her rear brakes worked on because they seemed to 'stick a little'. She picked up the bike just before our trip. That nearly cost her her life. In the case of our friend, they charged her for the brake work, but later investigation shows that it was never done at all. Even if it had been, it makes no sense at all to depend on recent mechanical work while out on a tour. Far better, test the bike for several hundred miles before taking that tour. Our friend's rear brakes locked up 1,100 miles into the tour with us and she did a high-side at 50 MPH. So, this time a few hundred miles of testing would not have discovered the problem. But what about the next time? It seems to me that the above does not quite put this message in perspective. So, try this one... Yesterday Elaine picked up her bike from the dealer after they had done some major work on it for her. She had the cams and lifters replaced on the right side of the block. She road the bike home and commented to me that the bike had never felt so good and smooth to her. She was thrilled with the work.
