Captives and captors forge a close bond in 'Prisoner of the Mountains' By Richard von Busack T HE RUSSIANS were fighting Muslims in the hills long before Chechenya, long enough ago that Tolstoy once wrote a novella about it. Director Sergei Bodrov has updated the "Prisoner of the Caucasus" into Prisoner of the Mountains , a beautiful little movie about a wartime incident, high in the mountains dry with summer. A Russian assault vehicle is ambushed, and two soldiers are captured. Sacha (Oleg Menshikov) is the older man; Vania (Sergei Bodrov Jr., son of the director) is the newer, callower trooper. The two are kept chained in the basement of a house by a herdsman who wants to exchange them for his son, who was earlier captured by the Russians. Sacha, out of boredom, delights in scaring Vania, telling him that the locals like to castrate prisoners. The village is so small and the mountains so vast that the sympathy that grows between captor and captives changes the fate of these soldiers. They're not nice Russians, though. Sacha admits that it wasn't patriotism that drew him into the army: "I was stupid, I needed money and I loved guns." And the villagers retaliate for an escape attempt by making Vania stay chained in a sewage trench.

Ugra-Inform – "Seagull" is the only Festival, aimed at the theatre life" - these words of Oleg Menshikov became the key-note of all performances which sounded at the Opening of the III Theatrical Festival "Seagull". Held in Khanty-Mansiysk last Friday. Besides Oleg Menshikov other "stars" including Nikolai Fomenko, Viktor Sukhorukov, Andrei Panin were noticed at the Winter Garden of the Center of Arts where the reception took place. The announcers were Ekaterina Konovalova and Igor Zolotorutsky. During the reception the short films were broadcast about first-night performances – Festival participants. After each film its script-writer and actors were given the floor. The Festival "Seagull" has been held for 3 years already. As the announcers say, unlike the first two festivals the hosts tried to hold the Festival on the international level. The III Theatrical Festival will last for 10 days and be finished on November 10.

Dendy Films Cast: Oleg Menshikov, Sergei Bodrov, Jnr, Djemal Sikharulidze Reviewed by JAYNE MARGETTS "THE wind frightens the heart of any strangers here ..." and so begins Sergei Bodrov's Tolstoian erudite, haunting , compassionate and picturesque Prisoners Of The Mountain. Swivelling through rugged and expansive vistas of war, patriotism, man and the Russia-Chechnyan struggle, Bodrov's portrait was the Winner of the FIPRESCI (International Critics Prize) Award, the Audience Award at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy and Golden Globe Awards. It also prompted Boris Yeltsin to push for peace after he had experience it. High on a mountain plateau in Chechnya, vodka is purchased by guns, people worship at the Islamic altar, a young girl learns to empathise rather than hate, a father attempts to trade two Russian soldiers for the life of his son and history continually haunts and compels these solitary denizens into ballistic action and waging their own war. The stone labyrinth is populated largely by old women, men, donkeys, an age old religion and children and is untouched by the 20th century. This is a haven of simplicity and of passionate retaliation and when the wiry Abdoul-Mourat (Djemal Sikharulidze) captures two Russian soldiers he is convinced that it will result in his sons' release as a hostage from the military barracks.
